Well... one of the reasons the 360 and PS3 let go install games (some are mandatory) is because the disc drive of those consoles are made with tech from 2005/2006 so they are kinda slow... that's why you need to install some games.

The Wii U disc drive is several times faster than the 360 and PS3 drives, so load times are not a problem (well... except for the Lego game... I guess the code of the game is not very optimized).
 
Didn't want to start a new thread for this but it's april. Where is that firmware update? I sure would appreciate my Wii U more if it were speedier.

I don't know how that would be possible. I think it's rather safe bet to say we'll get it within 6 months. That is if something really unexpected didn't happen like one morning one of the employee's flipped and deleted all existing copies and assets of Pikmin 3.

But the larger RAM in Wii U takes longer time to fill up, so load times aren't necessarily that much better. Anyway, an external HD in Wii U is behind a slow USB 2.0 connection, so it doesn't help much with load times either.

Isn't it possible to just do background loading? Just load 1/4th of the content, jump into the game early, then load the rest while the player plays the game? I'm not a game designer, but this seems like it should be possible. If there are RAM concerns, just make sure the player doesn't do anything memory intensive for a little while with subtle time-wasters (like forcing them to walk around the map).

Yeah, of course, but some devs choose the easy way, and just fill up the RAM during a loading screen. One of the things I liked about Gamecube were the quick loading times...

Well USB 2 is still around 50% faster than what Nintendo said the optical drive can do, and that's not taking into account the horrible latency of optical drives (...although I'd assume/hope devs would optimize loading to reduce seeking around as much as possible).
 
I just got some free time now that school is winding down, progressed in NSMBU. Game is awesome, way better than NSMB2 was. The secret exits in levels are hard to find as well, they're really well hidden.
 
Very satisfied with my system. However, I really wish eShop prices would better match retail prices. Assassin's Creed III is either $29.99 or $39.99 at a number of stores. Why is it still $59.99 on the eShop? It's not Nintendo's problem, it's a publisher problem. But an annoying problem nonetheless.

Ubisoft did have a nice sale on the eboy, I hope to see more and full price drops, tho a game like AC3 prob wont have one until AC4 comes out

I got ACIII for $42 on the eShop during the 30% off Ubisoft sale.
 
The 3DS and Wii U online servers are both down right now. I just tried sending somebody a friend request on Wii U, and "the server is currently undergoing maintenance." Spring update incoming?

I'm selling a television this week and will have money to buy a Wii U, so the spring update intrigues me, however I may want to just wait it out until E3 to see what kind of announcements they make about pricing or potential new models and such. I really dislike the hard drive storage options (and I'd rather not buy an external).

Yes, it's coming out this month but they made (somehow) a big deal about this update two weeks ago.

If it were the update, they should have announced it through Twitter, Facebook or even YouTube. Nothing so far.

So I didn't wanna post this in any other thread, because I'm not really complaining about my system, but I am having a problem with it that I'm hoping someone can help me figure out =/

Recently my gamepad has been losing connection for no apparent reason. I used to be able to take my gamepad all over the house, other bedrooms, downstairs (as long as I was directly under my room). Now, the gamepad seems to be losing connection though even when I'm like 2-3 feet away from the console while I'm playing. It won't even attempt to connect when I am in the other bedroom now, even though I have done that before. I think I'm mostly frustrated with the fact that it's losing connection for no reason while I am playing though, and I am right in front of my TV with the system there like 5-6 feet away at the most.

I first noticed this problem starting to occur when one time I was trying to turn off my Wii U. I was pressing the power button on the gamepad, and I noticed it didn't turn off the system, just the gamepad by itself. So I had to start over, and turn the gamepad back on, and then reattempt to turn off the system. Ever since then I've noticed these connection issues with the gamepad.

Any help on how I can fix this?

Maybe the console and the gamepad have a faulty sync? Have you tried to desync and sync the gamepad again from the system settings?

That's the only thing I can think of.
If that doesn't work then try calling Nintendo Support.

I got the same problem once, due to a hardlock. As posted above, desync and then sync again the gamepad solved the issued.
 
I've been looking under system settings trying to figure out how to desync the gamepad, but I can't find a setting to do that.
 
Picked up Batman AC: Armored Edition for $20 at Best Buy. Very well done port! Graphics are slightly better than PS3/360 with the frame rate usually at 30+ FPS. Sometimes going near 60 depending on the camera angle. No jaggies (that I can see.) No texture pop-in. No screen tearing. This is a far cry from what I saw of it at E3 last year (sub 30 and textures took forever to load). Major improvement.

Also has all of the DLC included, off TV Play and the most Gamepad support I've seen in any ported Wii U game so far. This includes the map, mini-games and sub-menus. Even your phone convos are done on the GamePad to help really bring you into the game. The new feature is Batman's new Armor which can absorb his punches until a meter turns blue. Then you touch the blue spot on the gamepad and he deals extra damage in his punches. If you don't have any of the DLC on your old copy, at $20 it's definitely worth double dipping.

P.S. Amazon is price matching it.
 
Looks like I'm getting a brand spanking new Wii U for my birthday this week-end. I planned to buy one buy the end of the year, but because of MH and NSMBU I'm really excited anyway!!

Thing is, I think the wife may be buying the white one ("because the color goes better with our living room").

How big of a deal is this?

I do plan to buy some games digital (if the price is not horrendous), but don't you have to go for a ext. HDD anyway with the 32gig model sooner or later?

Yea if you are really considering going digital basic or premium model you will definantely need a ext HD.
 
speaking of april news, weren't we supposed to get the Rayman Legends DLC exclusive content in early April? any news about it?
 
I am very well satisfied with my Wii U, so I don't mean to shit up the thread, but how exactly are so many people enjoying off-TV play? I seriously can't leave the room without it cutting out. Are people living in dorm rooms or is there some special way to hook this up to make it work better?

My bedroom shares a wall with the living room. So I can play in bed. I don't get the range others boast, though. It could be the result of so many routers active in my apartment building.

I find it nice to play If I'm just sitting at my desk, or not really in the mood to sit in front of my TV and play. Although I've had to do that recently because MH3U doesn't support Off-TV play just yet. It's just a pleasant and chilled way to experience certain games I find. However, if a game doesn't support it or both screens are required, it's not a deal breaker for me.
 
I have problems with Off-TV play, but I'm pretty sure the reason why I can't play in other rooms is because my house is made with cinder blocks.

That's a problem, right?
 
Yeah I love my Wii U and all, but the off-tv play is very limited. They need a range booster or something so that most people can benefit from this option of playing.

My interior walls are just studs and drywall. If I lose line-of-sight to the Wii U it just cuts out. It's definitely my biggest disappointment with the system so far.
