The Tories weren't homophobic?

I must have lived in an alternative England in the 80's. The endless sneering at gay and lesbian issues, the outrage at any help given to them by councils etc.

Didn't happen.

Or we could have let countries do what their people wanted, and we do what our people want.

But that would be against the economic interests of the elite. Invading grenada and overthrowing Mosaddegh sure saved American lives...

'Liberty' is only available via Neo Liberalism didn't you know?

There's no evidence that Mrs T supported apartheid. There's a world of difference between supporting it (which she didn't) and not believing that economic sanctions by the UK were the right tactical means to use at the time (which she did). They are not the same thing.
There's plenty of evidence that -
a. she opposed sanctions on South Africa
b. the sanction contributed greatly to the fall of Apartheid.

This is like saying that the US does not support Israel because they said they're against the settlements.

This is a shameful episode in the history of England and the biography of Thatcher. I don't think that even fans of her should excuse her on that point.

Interesting to see Kinnock putting the blame solely on Scargill for the miners strike in the bbc obit docu. Or at least falling straight into her trap.

It was something to do with a flaw in the original wording if I remember correctly.

The act had to be repelled and a new law was introduced.

I cant remember the exact details though (it could be a bit longer than that, not sure)

No. It was a Law Commission thing to do with clearing up the statute book - the Act was repealed, but its consequences (here, the abolition of slavery) were not. Like the hundreds of old old Railway Acts that were repealed doesn't mean the railways were suddenly illegal.

As a result, they had to introduce new prospective criminal offences regarding slavery, but it doesn't mean slavery was legal in the meantime.

There's a bunch of other things above I need to respond to (for example I had clean forgotten about the Lords stalling sect 28, so I might have to apologise a bit). Gimme a bit of time.

Yes, Thatcher and Reagan set about freeing up the free market even further, and no one ever came along and corrected that. There are still ridiculous levels of abuse and excess and very little in the way of accountability.

That she did this at the same time she took massively punitive measures against the poor and working class - well, people are right, she was certainly ballsy.

New Labour. "left-wing"

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA my fucking sides brb hernia

The reason fuck-all's changed is because of her - neoliberalism is now the default stance of British politics.

Well she did set a trap perfectly and Scargil jumped in it grabbing the cheese only to have the hammer trap slam down on him.

I hate her, but it was a brilliant plan.

Scargill should have had a vote, he would have won. Bad call.

Not as bad as the twats at the UDM.

Yeah but...

In Glasgow, more than 300 people gathered in the city centre for an impromptu party, organised on Twitter.

Members of organisations including the Anti-Bedroom Tax Federation, the Communist party, the Socialist party, the Socialist Workers party and the International Socialist Group, were joined by members of the public in George Square.

We do hate her, but not that much.

I think sometimes people may forget that yes, at the time the UK & US supported regimes that had diabolical human rights records, there was always a reason.

The vast majority of times, it was to stop the communist movements that was sweeping like wildfire across the globe (they certainly wasn't saints) .

The UK & US were concentrated on the Cold War. They didn't want another Cuban missle crisis on their hands. You know the saying "the enemy of my enemy is my friend"

It was a shit time and everyone had to dance with the devil at some point

The Domino Theory was proven to be bullshit after the rest of Southeast Asia didn't go Communist after Vietnam did. It's amazing how many people in the West still hold onto the Cold War mindset.

Didn't Thatcher go apeshit over Grenada because the Queen was head of state there?

The Metro's front page is particularly striking.

Editorially, they're in a particularly odd position, owned by the Daily Mail, but with an urban, liberal cosmopolitan readership.

Are you saying that the soviets didn't have the intention of communism being the world's dominant economic system? Talk about revisionist history

As much as neo liberals want that to be the only economic system. They both sought to spread their ideology to every country in the globe.

She wasn't evil, she was just a deranged control freak who made the mistake of thinking her fellow Tories were anything other than backstabbing, selfish career politicians. As soon as Heseltine decided he didn't want to be on her leash, that was it. The poll tax riots were nothing more than an excuse for them to get rid of her. And I agree that she did far more harm for woman politicians than good.

Soviet Union, Poland, Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania, East Germany, Czech Rep, Hungary, Romania,Bulgaria,Yugoslavia China, North Korea, Vietnam, Albania, Macedonia. If other pieces didn't fell it wasn't for the lack of trying.

It was Mr Whippy, she was a food scientist in between first leaving university and returning to study law. She helped develop a way of serving soft ice cream.

She was actually researching ways to pump ice cream with oxygen without it collapsing; even then she was trying to con people.

I thought it was Raspberry ripple she created.

pretty sure it was mr whippy, either way should could've died a hero, with nothing but good things being said on the news, the tide has finally turned on the news though the opinions of the people are finally being heard almost nothing but thatcher bashing, oh yes

That's cos it contains milk, what did she have against cows?

Why did the cows go mad?, there's something fishy about this

The soviets had no operative plans to conquer the world, and they did significantly less than the CIA to actually promote their ideology.

They wanted buffer states on their border because they got tired of getting conquered and burned twice a century by central European powers.

I can see someone argue that Stalin wanted to conquer the world (even though documents have since surfaced that suggests he was mostly scared shitless from the US) but in the 80s?
This is after Helsinki, this is after SALT II.
The Soviets were pretty much ready for normalization, and had Reagan didn't scrap Détente because of his bullshit "window of volunerablity" hysteria we would've probably ended the cold war a decade early.

What channel?

This is so amazing I had to check it wasn't still April 1st. The Daily Mail finds reason to attack the BBC even in this:

EDIT: OH, they're a banned site. Good-o. Here's the story:

The BBC made an embarrassing blunder this afternoon after announcing that the former Conservative prime minister Margaret Thatcher had died after suffering a strike instead of a stroke.
An update on the mobile website of BBC News wrongly stated that she had been killed by a form of industrial action.
It read: 'Reaction as former UK Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher dies following a strike.'

In reality she suffered a stroke and passed away at the age of 87.

Somebody's probably made this joke already, but isn't it ironic that there's a national milk powder shortage on the day Thatcher died?

Has Mark Thatcher been on the news yet? I'm just wondering how likely it is he'll appear because if I see him I'm likely to put my foot through the telly.

As a socialist I could not be further from her policy making.

Nevertheless she wasn't Hitler. I personally find it disgusting that people are celebrating her death.

Will Mark and Carol have to pay the spare bedroom tax now?

Shamelessly stolen.

Mark will be too busy overthrowing some African nation.

Why?
Honest question.
Because I can point you the upside - it tells other politicians that if they fuck their people too much, the people will fuck their memory.
I think that's a valuable lesson for aspiring politicians.

if you go out of your way to "party" because of the death of an elderly, senile, demented democratic political figure, you're a sad-act and need to sort your head out.

She wasn't a dictator. Her policies were supported by the electorate.

Stalin's stated policy was always "Socialism in One Country". He never wanted the perpetual worldwide revolution that Trotsky did. Like you said, the Iron Curtain was a reaction to continual Western aggression against Russia, not the first step in a scheme to conquer the globe.
