Margaret Thatcher has died

Eh, it's not that big of an issue.

Not being funny but anyone trying to guess the amount of fraud that happens simply cannot get close as the system is so bloated with numbers. Its not made any easier as the DWP has a nasty habbit of juggling people between benefits (I was told to send people with something like a strained wrist to incapacity benefit). Benefit juggling is one of the easiest ways people abuse the system.

I can only go on what I have seen personally, that was about 1 in 4 who had no intention of finding work.

This is the strange mentality that people such as myself find so off-putting about the left in general. The idea that the most important thing is the intention. It doesn't matter if we go broke (whereupon we can no longer fund all the various things we support), as long as we did it whilst trying to help people. The reason most economic right wingers, like myself, support the policies that we do is because we think they're the best way for people - working class, upper class, everyone in between - to live a prosperous life. It's this strange idea that the left seems to have that it's only they who care about the poor and the weak and the vulnerable, and that they must do everything possible to oppose the nasty right with their cruel privatising and nasty cuts to public services - as if a society where we "go broke caring about people" is better than one where we "care" (where "level of care" is defined by how large a government's chequebook is) a bit less but can actually fund it.
Well, liberal policies actually help people though.

Lord Bell said: "It is with great sadness that Mark and Carol Thatcher announced that their mother Baroness Thatcher died peacefully following a stroke this morning."
Can you actually die peacefully from a stroke? Always thought strokes were a little more dramatic.

its difficult to find strong woman in politics, only sonia gandhi comes to mind

many young girls can look upto these women and become productive members of society

Thatcher isn't one of them, she hated feminists with a passion reserved for commies and socialists.

She called Mandela a terrorist. She supported Pinochet, Suharto and Hussein. She started a war. She grew government and made it more inefficient while destroying the industries that most needed to transition. As a direct result of her government's policies, the jobless exploded and gutted a generation precisely at the time when the move from a manufacturing to a service economy could have been managed with careful, considered economic management. She did these things out of hate, spite and a love of class war. She loved the right and hated the left more than she love England or hated its enemies (imagined or real.)

She was a terrible person and a terrible prime minister.

Her marginal positive deeds are worthy of note: she understood the threat climate change posed to the British economy, she confronted corruption in the British public service, she managed England's reputation in Europe well.

But I spit on her grave, and pray for the hastening to theirs of those who would bolster her name today. Then I spit on it again.

It was even better with the Mail (I think) which was exactly the same but with "massive" in front of stroke.

Like, what.

Oh my... It's almost like the onion

That articles cites studies, not "guesses".

Besides, the UK is on par with the European average as far as welfare spending goes overall. This sudden, pearl-clutching hysteria about "scroungers" is fucking stupid. It's clearly a case of politicians scapegoating the poor in order to keep the heat from the middle-class off themselves in tough economic times....which is what Right-wing populists have always done, in any country.

Divide and conquer never fails to work.

Divide and conquer never fails to work.

When "not complaining" is a national trait (and indeed one that people are fucking proud of!) and people don't like to "cause a fuss" and "know their place" and "accept their lot" then it's not exactly going to fail.

British society is a fucking wet dream for the Right.

Strokes are very undramatic. I know a guy who was talking to a friend of his who had a stroke right there and didn't feel anything. My friend was the first person to notice something was wrong, not the guy actually having the stroke!

What about the hypocrisy of the left.

Left: Tax the rich bastards.

Why?

Left: Because they are rich selfish pigs.

O.K. What do we do with the money?

Left: You give it to me!!!

Isn't that selfish

Left: No, its equality

Because everyone else pays their taxes. In fact, if a pleb tries to evade paying, he'll get the full brunt of the law crashing down on him.

Not the glorious elite, though. They can commit fraud and avoid paying taxes, launder money for drug lords and tank the world economy on the same day with zero repercussion.

Thats quite funny when you think about how widespread tax avoidance was under Labour...

13 years in power and they never knew that Starbucks, Google & Amazon existed. They also never watched Jimmy Carr on TV either.

Its O.K though as the left blame Thatcher for that as well.

This is a real post?

Holy shit.

Im taking the piss

You keep viewing labour as left wing when they have not been for almost two decades.

Edit: Also what he said ^^^

How many times has it been mentioned that every government since her has been Thatcherite?

She started a war because when a military dictatorship invaded islands that were international recognized as part of the UK and whose population recently voted over 99% in favor of remaining part of the UK, she didn't do nothing.

Ah that way of starting a war! The old... after your country is invaded you fight back kind :)

Lulz, yeah she was crazy that way.

So you acknowledge the problem? Awesome! Now let's stop demonizing poor people and shaking them down for pocket change, and instead, go after the chubby old white dudes who have literally hoarded a third of the world's wealth in offshore tax havens.

Which begs the question why do so called lefties vote new Labour when the SLP exists?

It doesnt beg any question. Labour are the only party that can potentially win an election and most people only know the existence of tories, lib dems, labour and the monster raving looney party. Oh and now UKIP.

Plus alot tactically vote to keep the tories out.

Wow, what an amazingly silly inaccurate caricature depiction. I guess every Republican is then like Mr. Potter in It's a Wonderful Life.

I know the problem exists and I have no problem with going after tax avoiders. Neither do the tories, as they have secured deals already for places like the isle of man recently.

However, can I add the biggest tax dodgers please. The self employed sector?

Whats stopping the unions throwing support behind the SLP. Whats stopping New Labour members switching.

The reason is simple. The old socialist movement made itself unelectable after the 70's. Blame a more right wing(ish) Labour Party on that...

Yes, they are greedy, and yes, they do have too much of society's money, and the working class's productivity has steadily increased while wages have remained stagnant and the wealth gap has exploded to the detriment of society, so yes, give it to me. You got it all right except for the "hypocrisy" part. Bravo.

The solution to the threats from the super-wealthy that they'd take their ball and go home is to threaten them back. If they do decide to go just seize all their assets and tell them to fuck off.

And revoke their citizenship/ban them from the country for x number of years.

Would be legit justice, want to be an anti-society sociopath dickhead? Get out and stay out, we can create things without you.

But that's a pipe dream =/

I actually think that the solution is to realize that it's not a threat at all.
What do you think will happen if they "take all their money", you think we'll run out of cash?
You're worry about deflation?
And please, any person who hate the government that much probably parked most of their wealth in a tax haven, so what is the concern, that they'll start taking their vacations abroad?

CEOs and hedge fund managers think they have some magic irreplaceable skills, but they're wrong, there are countless talented hungry up and comers who would gladly take their place.

You do know tax evasion is illegal yes? In order to evade tax you usually need to have some kind of laundering operation going on and be risking prison. Its not easy.

Tax avoidance is completely legal and expected practice given how hugely overly complex or tax system is.

Not to mention can't you just train new people? Didn't Cuba and the Soviet Union replace their colossal brain drains in just around a decade? I know its different since the people weren't allow to leave the country freely but its not like these professionals don't come from somewhere and just pop out of nowhere.

I think the important thing here is that the right moment to celebrate Thatcher's departure was in 1990 when she left office. Anything since then is irrelevant as her capacity to exert her influence had ceased.

I'm sure she did important, unpopular and necessary things, and I'm sure she did some bad things too.

At the very least, I hope people learn from her mistakes.

Train?
Come on.
You think there is one qualified person competing for these types of jobs?
I get that this country has a bit of business hero worship complex, but let's get real here.

You'd think we'll go through a CEO shortage while the MBA departments switch to crisis mode?
Would the country stop functioning without Trump and some hedge fund managers spend more than 50% of their time in their vacation houses in the caymans?
I literally don't even have an idea what do they mean by "leaving", like, you're quitting your job?
You're buying a house in Europe?
Oh no! the horror!

The slp have no chance of power that's why they don't switch. And Thatcher moved British politics so far to the right by convincing the country they are Conservative hence the neo liberal consensus replacing the social democratic consensus.

Goodbye full employment. Welcome unemployment to keep inflation down!

Not really that difficult. Benazir Bhutto. Golda Meir. Indira Gandhi. Aung San Suu Kyi. Hillary.. Clinton? Madeleine Albright. and all, probably, more admired in their native countries than Thatcher.

Urgh. Knew this would happen. People accusing Brixton of being classless because of the party. This is why I hate that people think they can just come here and run the place's name in the mud knowing their own hometowns' reputations stay spotless.

To make it worse some people tried looting a charity shop of all things.

Just lies perpetuated by rags that dare to call themselves newspapers, if any stronger argument for restricting the "free press" exists I'd like people to show it

I'm guessing you think democracy is a good thing as long as stuff only happens with it that you agree with?

I'm getting that vibe.

I'm reading that she never admitted she was wrong in calling Mandela a terrorist (and I'm not even talking about apologizing).

Mandela plotted a bombing campaign against a government, now does that make him a freedom fighter or a terrorist? The IRA were classed as terrorists to the majority, but to the few they were freedom fighters doing just work.....

You're really taking the "Mandela is a terrorist" side of this argument?
Because you do realize she wasn't just making small talk, it was generally along the lines of Mandela is a terrorist, and we can't support him because he will slaughter whitey.

Remind me how that worked out in the end?

Edit: and again, being wrong at the time is one thing, though please, Peter fucking Gabriel figured out it was wrong, how complicated that can be?
But she could've apologized, she could've admitted she was wrong, she did neither.
Fuck her.

Wait, Brixton still celebrated into the night? Briefly watched a webcam feed of George Square around midnight and it was virtually empty. I popped out for milk and only got random inaudible shouting from some crazy (drunk?) guy at a window. Common occurrence really. Not heard/read any major disturbances.
