My main issue with Tron wasn't the story itself. Yeah its ridiculous but for what it was going for it was ok. Bigger issue was that seemingly the punches don't land. As awesome as the soundtrack and the visuals were, there was a lack of "oomph" to the action. There was no loud pop.

It was even more so amplified when I recently caught the movie on FX. Wife loved the music and the visuals so I think we will go check Oblivion out just for that anyway. Plus haven't been to the movies since Silver Linings back in Dec so might as well go kick off the movie season with the Cruise Missile!

Tom Cruise used to work consistently with great filmmakers.
What happened?

I would take Cruise over the new breed of Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hardy, Fassbender etc. any day.

If you haven't listened to the OST yet, DO IT. It's amazing. As good as the Tron Legacy score.

I have not seen Tron:legacy. What was the problem with it?

Also this might be a nice "dumb" Sci-Fi movie though
Story and characters lack any sort of resonance. I would not believe who says they actually like the story.

Amazing visual though. I love Tron Legacy as an audio-visual experience and I'm still looking forward to the next one.

That seems to be the trapping of that universe. The cartoon was mildly better since it didn't stick to whole games crap.

The OST is solid, but M83's influence seems minimal at best. There are moments where his signature is apparent. After this, Legacy, and Uprising soundtracks; it all sounds like Trapanese to me. Pretty clear he does the heavy lifting.

Same

Tron Legacy is a shallow film but has a great pulse. Basically it's visuals and music make it what it is. Still need to get around to watching the cartoon more. I'm assuming they're only doing the one season?

I get to see this next week. Looking forward to hearing impressions from those of you that get to see it today/tomorrow.

Was this filmed in IMAX at all? I'm debating between seeing the normal or IMAX version.

The entire film was shot in IMAX.

Looking forward to seeing it in Imax. Because of people who told me that Tron sucked, i skipped it in imax. Damn you people, it was the amazing experience/movie. Anyway,.i have high hopes for Oblivion, gonna see it on friday.

Yes, but.

The third film is apparently very likely going to happen. I wouldn't be surprised if Disney tried to do anther cartoon project if not directly resurrect Uprising.

I was specifically referring to Uprising. Tron 3 seems to be coming together..... slowly. Disney still tries to target kids with Uprising and it wasn't capturing them. Prospects of it's return are doubtful. Even if it had a little more character than the films. I'd be okay with
a few characters from Uprising just showing up in the film

Not to derail this thread into stealth-Tron thread.

EDIT:
The entire film was shot in IMAX.
IMAX it is. Luckily we have a full 70mm one here.

Yeah, this was not shot entirely in IMAX.

Hmm, really? Are you sure? I definitely thought it was...

EDIT: This?

Does the IMAX version open up the frame for any scenes?

KOSINSKI: With TRON, I opened it up for 40 minutes of the movie. For Oblivion, I opened it up for the whole movie. So, Oblivion in IMAX will be full frame 1.9 through the whole thing, just because that was the format the chip on the camera was able to shoot. So, I shot the whole thing full frame, but composed for 2.4.0, which will be in the standard version.

Shot on digital. He is simply saying the camera was capable of capturing at the same aspect ratio as IMAX. However it mimics 35mm so the level of detail will not be as great as a 70mm IMAX film camera.

Ahh, gotcha. That was my bad, I thought you guys were referring specifically to aspect ratio. I'm fully aware that they didn't use the massive IMAX film cameras for this. ;p

EDIT:
No it wasn't. You're getting confused with the aspect ratio being increased for IMAX presentations.

Duuhh, missed this.

Edit: removed "mimic"
Yes and no. It was shot with the Sony CineAlta F65 which allegedly the next generation of digital. Still probably not up to IMAX though.

The Sky Tower-set is amazing.

They captured the sky and clouds with cameras on a mountain and projected it on giant screens around the set. No bluescreen.

I had posted this in one of the other threads. Absolutely gorgeous. I love that so much was done in camera.

Behind the scenes pics like this really drive that home.

That's a good way of putting it about Tron. I saw it in the theater and really didn't like it much. Then when it came out on blu-ray I rented it and really enjoyed the hell out of it. Now I own it and watched it a few times and yeah, although Tron isn't a great movie, I find it very enjoyable to sit down and relax with.

The comparisons of Oblivion to Tron are positives for me, I think I'll catch this next weekend now.

Just seen this today. I enjoyed it quite a bit.

I don't like looking too much in to trailers, but having seen a couple of trailers for this, I wasn't expecting much - though it turned out much better than I expected.

Often it felt like quite a traditional, 60's/70's style Sci-fi epic. Obviously with a bigger budget, better special effects and pretty good acting. That is both good and bad I suppose, whilst it feels entertaining and epic, you can't help but get a feeling of deja vu.

There are some pretty good action scenes in the film that had me entertained, whilst the overall tone of the film was quite strange, almost an uneasy calm, which worked well. Towards the middle of the film
I enjoyed the twist, and then the 'chase' scene, though I was worried after that chase when he peered over the dune, I was thinking "Please don't be Tom Cruise", and it was... though it worked out better and slightly less cliched than I thought, I am particularly glad there wasn't a "I'm the real Jack" moment.

The film probably just lacked a little soul to be truly great, but certainly a solid bit of entertainment.

Full IMAX should be a bit higher. It's relative to 27 megapixels I believe. The CineAlta is only about 20. But I'm sure its gonna look real close in both projection types.

EDIT: He says he aimed for 1.9 in that Collider article. So we should be looking at a ratio like the IMAX version of Skyfall.

Thanks for biting the bullet

What other films have shot with the F65 so far? Just this and After Earth, correct?

How did you feel about the soundtrack?

Yeah, I watched it again on FX and was shocked by how distractingly lifeless it was on rewatch. It has the visuals and music that imply it should be something special, but they all feel so disconnected from the actual storytelling beats. There's no sense of urgency, or earned emotion. Just... listlessness.

It's either this or The Place Beyond the Pines, but I'll have to go with the latter since it might go out of cinemas faster.

I'll have to make my mom choose between Gosling and Cruise.

Saw it today, not a modern classic (twist is lame) but very enjoyable and perfect role for Cruise. Soundtrack is fantastic.

but yeah, the film is good. konsinski and his dp have quite a classical visual sense, it reminded me of 70s hollywood pictures in how it was framed. frequently spectacular and always considered, just a real treat.

in other areas konsinski doesn't feel quite there yet. given the material there was a lot of unfulfilled potential, it's short on insight and there's a lack of originality to how he executes the important elements. he was never concerned enough with the psyche of cruises' character, i thought. he shows it, but never explores it.

just imagining what spielberg would've done with this material makes my mouth water. high standards, i know. still it's better than a lot of pap out there and definitely isn't without merit

Glad it came out a bit early here and i didn't read much about it. This is a film that can get spoiled easily. With that said, at the end it was better written than Tron.

Thought the start of the film was its worst part, with the hamfisted exposition and poor delivery. Even though it all
made sense at the end, the beginning just set the wrong tone for me. Once it got moving i enjoyed it a lot but whenever it slows down it dips into cheesiness, working with actors obviously isn't Kosinski's strength. I agree that there was enough here that could have been amazing with better direction.

It would have made a pretty great Metroid Prime style game too. Imagine seeing it all without needing any stilted narration or dialogue... Could have been a classic.

I've read mixed reactions over the soundtrack. It was here on GAF someone claimed that it sounded like The Dark Knight or The Dark Knight Rises.
