VG Leaks: BC for NextBox to be an add on, can play offline

Why not just have another SKU with BC for the people that want it?

It would be seen as the Premium SKU, thereby raising the console's perceived price

But what I don't understand is why there's not at least software BC.

You can't go from an x64 PowerPC architecture to x86 and realistically emulate the old hardware.

The Kinect 2.0 is not a primary focus bit is the biggest thing working against this rumour, same with it not being required to be plugged in.

I can't see a world where Kinect 2.0 and the NUI isn't one of their biggest sells and pillars moving forward. That part I don't believe at all.

I think it would be smart to ensure everyone has a Kinect 2, but not try to push it too hard upon the early adopters who likely aren't interested. Then, a few years in, they shift their focus. They can launch with inoffensive features like facial recognition and voice commands (and some new features, I'm sure) to try to ease early adopters into using it. But the typical Dance Centrals and Kinect Adventures would likely flop, so why bother with them at launch?

This makes a lot more sense and would explain how wires got crossed with "the next Xbox will require an internet connection" and why Orth tried to defend it.

I am curious is the spec delay for unveil is because they're changing stuff from the previous roadmap or if they're just waiting for final silicon.

People actually believe this shit?

Companies don't CARE about you playing your old games, or people having access to an old library. Only money.

BC stops people buying new games and boosts the pre-owned market, from which MS wont see a penny.

Actually this way Microsoft are making money from those who want BC. Since they have to buy Xbox Durango and Xbox Mini.

And why would they dilute the message of next gen by including "apple TV" features when the new Xbox, hell even the old one, has them already?
Because the market is bigger than just the core day 1 buyers.

It's not an option add-on anymore. It's MS' big sell going forward. So that doesn't mean you treat it like an add-on moving forward, you have to push it to ALL consumers and show versatility in the product, or else why are a fifth of your production costs going towards something aimed at a much smaller userbase?

You can't look at Kinect through the paradigms of last gen. The circumstances of it's existence are much different now that it's no longer an add-on, a successful device, and probably the most interesting and capable piece of technology all next gen.

EDIT: Actually NFC is pretty cool too, but I don't see Nintendo doing much with it in the long run, especially when it comes to Pokemon.

The proposed BC method is nuts. Still, this time yesterday, it looked like no BC at all was possible. So long term it's good news, to a point. Just a very expensive way to achieve BC.

The next Xbox not having native BC was a kick in the nuts, but kind of expected. I need to replace my ageing original model 360, as each time I turn it on, I sounds like it will be the last.

So to do this, I need to buy a new Xbox and a Durango together, as the new Xbox won't even play my 360 discs? So the new Xbox itself is an expensive waste, just whoring out its innards to its big pimp brother, and will never get used as an console itself.

I guess they do have a handful of Kinect-focused studios built up. I think their Kinect push at launch will consist of new system-level features, Kinect Sports, and perhaps a couple more titles that try to appeal to core gamers (I think Kinect Sports has that appeal). And I can see a game like Project Gotham or Fable 4 having some sort of Kinect support built in.

All previous rumours were 100% true. Now people dismiss the new ones.

Damn this generation is going to be fun. Can't wait for e3 xD

I think it's the fact that it was the same rumor being perpetuated over and over. Now a rumor comes out that's pretty much the opposite so I'm sure people are going to be a little hesitant.

The rumor states that:

- Durango has no system-level used game restrictions
- Durango has no system-level always-online restrictions
- 360 Mini connected to Durango enables disc-based "BC" using Durango's disc drive
- 360 Mini by itself requires online to get content since has no drive, unclear if always-online required for general use (I think unlikely)
- Kinect 2.0 not a focus for Microsoft
- Kinect 2.0 not required to be plugged in

Welp, I saw this coming; All that internet rage for nothing.

All that internet rage for nothing.

Maybe not. The rumours, from various sources, all pointed to mandatory online and blocking used games. The most recent rumours stating this were last week, with the sources saying the info was accurate 'as of two weeks ago'. So very, very recent.

So the question is, if the new VGleaks rumour is true, have all the previous sources been lying? Or had MS have a very recent (as in, the past few days) change of heart around the controversial aspects of the next Xbox? If its the latter, then the overwhelming internet rage on the subject would be the driving factor in their changes.

wouldn't it be possible by now? The system is fairly old and the chips are shrunk.

I really don't think so. the 360 slim still contains like a dozen decently sized ICs, ~20 cylindrical capacitors, a ton of connecting traces, and a giant fan/heatsink. I can't see them shrinking that board by 4X and moving purely to passive cooling.

If anything all the hate actually impacted their decisions for the better. Who knows what the bad news was actually. If it was leaked to test the waters or if they actually intended this stuff as designed. But we will know for sure soon enough. I for one have no regrets about taking giant shits all over the terrible idea of always on and such.

so you now have to buy 2 consoles what one could have done alone? what

Neither the X720 or PS4 to our knowledge can do BC alone, so no.

If you already own a X360 you won't need this add-on, however down the line if you only own a X720 and want to play some X360 games you could probably buy this for around $100 and get full BC.

It still could go either way, but in the end I think Sony and MS will end up having very similar used game policies.

Of course, those going into rage mode based on unconfirmed rumors and speculation will claim the public outcry as a reason for some kind of last second internal change of plans as opposed to admitting they may have jumped to conclusions.

I have no doubts they were at least seriously considering it at some point. That rumor has been floating around for a while from sources that have been pretty reliable. Even if it was a recent change, I'm glad they came to their senses. I would hate to have completely had to write off the system just because of one bonehead decision.

Odd how a mention of this hasn't been in any of the thread titles yet: -

I guess people aren't in such a rush to post this over the previous rumours. Funny that.

It's a great idea.

The $99 device is stand-alone. It functions like a Roku box but also gives you the XBLA marketplace. The market is big for devices like that, but this would be the only one that offers a decent game selection.

If you have a 360 already, you don't need the $99 device to play 360 games. If you are buying a Durango and you didn't own a 360 and want to play 360 games, you will now have a cheaper way of doing so.

The alternative would be to put 360 hardware inside Durango, pushing the price up when not everybody cares about BC anyway.

Nah. I already have way too many boxes. I would much rather BC be implemented into the system, then to add another box to my TV. I have too many.

You do realize that this is being done to keep the price of the system down right?

The mini box may still require an internet connection. That could have been what rumors were referring to which lead to misunderstanding. It's a new Xbox coming out, just not the one that we thought it was.

It also matches up with Paul Thurrott's rumor for Stingray.

Really this leak sounds more like intentionally damaging control done, that's why I believe.

Even Adam Orth got fired.

But this is coming from some of the same sources that gave us the old rumors, so it is just bias making those people dismiss the rumors.

VG Leaks has sources I didn't see where they said this is from the same source(s). In fact that site has been the butt of a few jokes lately saying that they have nothing to report on so they just keep posting news stories that are culling known bits from all over. So who knows they could have had a source say this, but why should we believe this one and not others? That's why I said all of them should be dismissed.

In the end I don't think Microsoft will have an always online system, but at the same time with recent examples of Sim City and Diablo 3 and the effect it could have in enanaring users into their ecosystem it wouldn't surprise me.

Liking the sound of these new rumours. I'd be all over a mini add-on 360, would love to bring my vast XBLA collection over to the Nextbox (I don't even have enough room for them all on my current 360!).

I've actually always liked the idea of a BC add on. Funny how rumors of that started as a Sony patent but it seems like Microsoft is the one actually doing it.

If the May 21 reveal is real then do you think within the next week or two we will get a heads up from Microsoft?
I doubt we'll hear anything before May.

What if they put 8 GB of GDDR5 in the mini-360 that can be added onto the X720.

:D

I wouldn't doubt it if Sony is already working on a add-on or that they will soon, it's a good idea.

So let me get this straight -

You will have to pay extra to buy a box that plays games that you already have a box for...

...and people think this is awesome/are praising this decision?

Sometimes I feel like I am in bizarro world.

So this new XBOX Mini wont have an HDD or DVD drive?

I could see this appealing to a few people, it would basically be an Apple TV that can play DD & XBLA games.

If you don't care for BC, don't buy it.

People are saying it's better than not having BC.

Sony is doing it via Gakai gradually, this box will offer full BC at the get go.

I like this BC solution if true. It's like a Local Network Gakai with media that I own. I could place my Xbox 360/Mini in another room and stream to my Durango.

*Hopefully it works on all versions of the Xbox 360 hardware.
*Would be interesting if the Xbox 360/Mini is functional to do other things while streaming to the Durango.
*Maybe we'll see Durango streaming to the Xbox 360/Mini.

What happened to Sony people praising options the other day and now that Microsoft is rumored to be adding a option for full-BC to the X720 it's all turned around and now options are a bad thing?

This is a optional premium for those that don't have a X360 or get rid of their X360 and want one later.
