VG Leaks: BC for NextBox to be an add on, can play offline

Are you deliberately acting obtuse?

Just because you have a PS3 does not entitle you to play PS3 games on your PS4 (at least, as far as we know).

Similarly, owning a 360 does not entitle you to play 360 games on the Durango (at least, as far as we know).

This rumour indicates that they're offering a cheap stand alone device, that - in addition to its media capabilities - can be connected to the Durango to enable BC.

Essentially, without pricing themselves out of the market by including BC by default. They have given the consumer more options.

Bizarro world indeed.

In Bizarro world it makes sense to buy a BC device when you already own a 360. If you don't already own one why would you want BC?

I'm confused, can this new 360 act as a standalone machine? Or can it only play 360 games if connected to Durango?

Stand-alone device that can hook up to a X720 and allow it to play X360 games through it's disc tray.

I wonder if via Durango we can have native upressing to 1080p for non 1080p games?

That would be a true BC game changer.

I hope it's true I would love to play Forza 4 at 1080p with proper anti-ailising.

It's a complete standalone 360 without a disc drive.

Folks need to stop focusing on it just existing for the sake of BC for the Durango, it's there as the next step in the 360's lifecycle.

It acts like a standalone machine but when connected to durango you can play your 360 games on the durango. gain the only way i see this nice is if its the size of an apple tv device. I mean afterall it is suppose to compete with it and form factor plays some part in it.

Good news. My interest in the Nextbox went from 0 to if-they-have-enough-exclusives-I-want-I'll-totally-get-it (eventually). Especially because I never had a 360.

Kind of wish BC was included in the package.

Now it feels like I'm buying a car with options.

Reasons?

Do you wish to force everyone that doesn't want to have BC pay a premium because buying it separately is above you for some reason?

0/10 would not buy

0/10 don't care about your opinion.

Apologies if this has been asked/answered already, but what are the odds of the Durango being compatible with original Xbox games?

Slim to none I think, the original Xbox used Nvidia architecture and the Durango will be using AMD.

For how many people won't ever use BC, it's smarter to keep the costs low and just introduce via a different piece of hardware. If they were to drop the 360 SoC in the Durango, you suddenly lose board space and costs go up for everyone. Making it optional, and standalone at that, just makes more sense in the long run.

It'll probably work just like the 360 works now. Microsoft has a list of games they built BC for on their website, check that and that's what you'll probably get.

I guess Microsoft doesn't want the $599 US dollars fate, and everyone remembers where they were and how they reacted when Sony revealed the PS3's 60 GB launch price.

Smart design that the BC box is standalone, but can't they also make a box that has both in? I guess that would be a RROD/YLOD/BLOD disaster.

0/10 don't care about your opinion.

Haha, what? Are you serious? This is an INCREDIBLY poor argument, especially when the device is coming with numerous other superfluous features much less meaningful than BC is

Why would people without 360's care about BC?

To buy and play 360 games.

If you have one already, why would you buy this next gen console plus another add on? It's different if it's built in because it's something that adds value to your hardware purchase.

You still pay for BC if it is built in to the system and you don`t have a choice. This way people that want it can pay for it and everyone else gets a cheaper 720.

Probably not all that hard given its x86/ATI heritage, but I doubt it worth it at this point for disc-based back compat with the original Xbox. If anything they would probably prefer to just sell them to you again online.

It's only a rumour but if true it's pleasing to see that MS are at least thinking about a backwards compatibility solution that lets me use my own physical 360 game collection. The device would have to be small and quite cheap for this to make any sense though.

Gakai's purpose is not for backwards compatibility. Sony has much bigger plans for Gakai/cloud gaming then just BC.

I'm not seeing much use for Gaikai outside of Backwards comparability on PS4 and maybe Vita.

Sony already said the PS4 will ofer Vita remote play with 99% of the games released.

Unless Sony is open to having their games played on Non-Sony hardware, or their phones? ehhhhhhhhhhh

I'm thinking it'll be Wii sized or smaller, it's been 3 years since the Xbox 360 S, so they can get it much smaller, that's without the disc drive too.

You can say the same about kinect.

Rumor has it, that the only required use of Kinect is the dev kits. The article in the last section talks about how the dev kit has to have every piece of possible hardware to function. Makes sense when you're a dev because you have to plan for all possibilities to ensure stability.

bc wasn't why ps3 was 599.

It wasn't the major reason but it was definitely a factor Sony saw they could cut to reduce costs.

No it's not, there is a difference between a feature people consider useless on the firmware side or a single hardware port and adding the hardware of a Xbox 360 to a console.

It isn't cheap and would increase the price of the Durango a good amount to have the X360 hardware built into it.

Just because you don't understand the argument doesn't mean it's a poor one.

bc wasn't why ps3 was 599.

It was part of the reason.

You don't have to insult other people about your argument.

I guess Microsoft will add BC as part of the package in the Xbox Durango Slim.

The launch box will have options to reduce sticker shock price and perhaps later will be streamlined to include the box that has it all.

Then why was BC removed? Seemed like a cost cutting measure.

ps2 bc wasn't exactly the reason why ps3 was $599.

To buy and play 360 games.

You can argue with me (please do) but I would like to think the majority (not all) of people that want to play 360 games will have purchased one already.

Sure, I bought some Gamcecube games after I got a Wii because it was a no brainer. The system had BC support built in and it wasn't costing me extra except for said games. I did the same things with PS2 games when PS3 came out. But it certainly wasn't a driving factor in my console purchase and I certainly wouldn't have considered it had I needed to buy some extra device to do so.

Once Durango is released, 360 is a dead format to be phased out.

And the rumor about the connection for BC not working with old 360s and nextBox make me think maybe it’s not using standard LAN connection? Maybe something similar to how WiiU stream to WiiU controller ? if that’s the case, the latency shouldn't be a major issue than,
And probably mini can play nextbox games by have nextbox streaming to mini the same way.

So user can:
Hook up mini in the bedroom TV
Hook up Nextbox in the Living room TV

Both of them able to access basically everything in both machines,

Too good to be true tho.

Highly doubtful. They'll get 2 more years after the launch of the Durango out of the 360 especially with the media push. Also, with this option, they can sell 360 devkits for dirt cheap but still have those games work with the Durango/360.

I was discussing this earlier with a friend, how some of the recent rumours could've been specific to dev kits rather than consumer units. I mean, are we expecting the consumer units and controllers to have those rumoured black and white bar code stripes too?

True, but I see them phasing out the disc-based Xbox slowly.

And Microsoft can get BB and Gamestop to sell Xbox-Mini by tying it to Durango pre-orders. Pre-order Durango for $50 when you buy your Xbox-mini and you get $50 off of Durango when you pick it up.

So you're getting backwards compatibility for your Durango, you're maybe getting a second controller, and you're possibly saving money on the package deal. If you want BC you'll definitely jump for that deal over the summer.

Just seems odd. Every single rumor, and past leaked documentation wrong? 180 degree turn? Even leaks from developers in the past month.

Just seems odd. Can't say I've seen this amount of leakage over such a long period of time have "no basis" on the actual console.

Honestly, it feels like Microsoft is backpedaling a bit. Perhaps eventually we will get some leaks (after launch) regarding the development cycle for the Nextbox.

Doesn't an add-on defeat the purpose of BC?

I want to have one box on my entertainment center...not multiple. Otherwise, if you've still got your 360, why would you shell out extra money for yet another one? You're still going to need two devices on your shelf...

The ideal solution would be a slot loaded BC module.

That doesn't answer my question.

Why was BC removed then if your arguments are that it didn't cost much?

i didn't say it wasn't a cost cutting measure, just that it wasn't the major reason for the $599 fiasco. when they got rid of ps2 internals, they also ditched 2 usb ports and the flash memory card readers, and probably something else too, can't really recall. when they saw the mistake they had made, they started getting rid of "non-essential" features.

We don't even have details on the thing and what it can do, it's not solely a BC box.

To be honest, I have been posting in this thread but I don't even believe the rumor.

I don't think MS would waste time on such nonsense.

A 360 mini (361) has been rumoured since before last summer? Certainly before all these other rumours started popping up.

The first positive news regarding the new Xbox? Lol

Hope it's true. A separate BC box is a good idea (better than nothing). Hope Sony gets in on it!

But how can it play 360 games on its own--independently of Durango--without a disc drive?

What I'm wondering is if I can replace my 360 with only this machine and not a Durango.

We don't know how it'll work is the thing. The rumor says this is what they're planning, but we don't know if it needs a direct connection via a cable or if it'll run something like wifi.

I don't think Microsoft is backpedaling at all. I think what we're seeing is a controlled leak of the consumer version of the Durango to calm the internet down. VGLeaks are the ones backpedaling with the assertion that the Kinect and internet required stuff is coming from just the dev units, not what we'll be buying later this year.

Maybe those rumors pertained only to dev kits.
