I'm sure most active people will agree, being injured in any way, shape or form is one of the most depressing things in the world. I've been recovering from a wrist injury for five months now and it's absolutely taken a toll on me both physically, and more importantly, mentally.

he's the coach, he's supposed to put player safety above all else. That's his job. He cant say,"well go for it kobe!" Kobe hyperextended his knee, he was on the ground holding it, medical trainer ready to examine him and what did pringles do? waved him off because kobe said he's fine. It happens again and this time kobe is limping around the backcourt clearly in pain, but he's the player so of course he will say he's fine. He wants to play, he's willing his team to win even when they gave up. Happened again. Pringles not doing a damn thing. Who cares if your fired, what's the point of having the job if your best player is gone. Besides he has a 3 year contract and he gets paid in full all 3 years even if fired because jim buss is an idiot, but that's a discussion for another time.
Kobe no doubt said he can play, but as a coach you have to look at the big picture and not destroy your star player. two times pringles could have taken kobe out to make sure for a fact he was ok and both times he shrugged it off. Third time cost us kobe and maybe even the final playoff spot. I don't blame it all on pringles, but I place a shit ton on him because he didn't do his job.

Try and play hockey my friend, way more physically exhausting than basketball. Stopping and starting on skates is something that happens many times a shift, and takes way more energy than on foot. You don't have time in a hockey game to do a pretty little loop everytime you need to change direction.

I don't think people can make judgements about energy expenditures of major league athletes based on playing the sports themselves, unless they actually played them in the major leagues. Even many athletes that do well in NCAA basketball aren't athletic enough to cut it in the NBA, with the 24 second shot clock, 8 second rule, and competitors that are taller and jump higher.

I agree with numble. Simply saying "I played both at a non-competitive level and can judge that one sport makes me more tired than another" would be wrong.
So, lamaroo, tell me the measured energy expenditures for each sport and show me again your hard proof that hockey is more exhausting than basketball. Otherwise, blanket statements shouldn't be made.

Good job, you can use google, if you knew a damn thing about about science you'd realize those causes are a blanket broad reason for things in which in we aren't sure or can't predict it. No shit overuse can lead to it, but over a few months of extra use but maybe years.

You don't know a thing. I wonder where you get your expert opinions from. Achilles is a 9-12 month recovery process for normal activity. If you are an elite athlete you will have to be blessed with a body that responds extremely well to the rehab process and heal quicker than average to be playing the sport of your choice in less than a year.
You have never seen an athlete recover from a full tear of the Achilles and come back in 4 to 6 months. Never.
Want to know how I know that you are full of crap?!?! Because I am three months post surgery as of tomorrow and I have been able to walk without an aircast for a week now and was given the goal to be able to stand on my toes in three months. Yes, I saw my surgeon on Thursday and was told that when she sees me back in three months she wants me to be able to walk with a normal stride and to be able to stand on my toes without assistance. Not juggling not working on plyometrics. Standing on my toes.
So that will be at 6 months surgery. And you think full recovery at 4-6 months? Go tell your stories elsewhere.
Certainly my experience wouldn't translate to the NBA or NHL, but from experience I exhausted much more energy per shift playing hockey than I did playing basketball. Again that was a throwaway statement though not meant to be taken too seriously, probably should have just left it out considering it didn't really have anything to do with correcting the mistakes of that other poster.
No other hockey league compares to the NHL either in the same way as your example.

I had 3 tears in the shoulder on my dominant (right) arm last summer. I went from running, swimming, rock climbing, playing basketball, racquetball, lifting weights, and doing disc golf to gaining about 25 pounds of fat, getting depressed, breaking up with my girlfriend, and sitting on my ass doing nothing but working or playing Diablo III for 5-6 months because I felt like there was fuck all else I could do until I had surgery and recovered.
It's been nearly a year since my injury and almost 6 months since my surgery. I'm finally able to work out again and have shed about 20 pounds of what I gained, but I still can't do most of the things I enjoy that helped keep me in shape. Feel like I'll never truly be able to throw a football or baseball again or swing a racquet with as much force as I'd like, but I know the time for a "full recovery" is still several months out so I'm hopefully just being pessimistic.
The most depressing time of my life has been this one; well, the worst of it was the beginning but it's getting better. Now that I'm getting active again I'm at least more optimistic but deathly afraid of re-injuring my shoulder and going back through all this again. The mental part is much harder to bear than the physical toll an injury puts a person through. At least from my experience.
As for Kobe: Second greatest player I've seen in my lifetime. Toughest player I've ever seen in my lifetime. You don't have to be a Lakers fan to feel terrible about this. One less reason to watch the NBA. I hope he makes a full recovery, but I'm not so sure. If anyone could pull it off, a young Kobe would be that guy. I have no doubt this older model will do all he can to prove everyone wrong and I hope he does.
Ice hockey requires a blend of athleticism that basketball doesn't require. It's physically more demanding at all levels.
