There is no market for either.
For Wii U:
Hardcore gamers have 360s and PS3s and don't want to spend $350 on a similarly powered console with Durango and PS4 on the horizon.
Casual gamers stopped playing their Wii's years ago and don't give a shit about the Wii U.
Nintendo fans will buy anything Nintendo makes, but in the home console space there are only so many of them around and they seemingly are a shrinking demographic.
The Vita is a nice piece of tech, but who is it selling to exactly? Hardcore gamers? Great but they can't carry a system. Casuals have moved on to tablets. Kids have 3DS'. Teens and young adults can play console style games at home, on a console.

It's still a poor comparison, then, since Wii U is a new system, it's still at least a bit more powerful than 360 / PS3, and it's using a pricey new controller that offers up new gameplay possibilities.

Every controller is going to have a gyro in it. Even the Ouya controller has a gyro.
It's not a defective product, it just has no games that justify it's rather high price tag to more than a small handful of people.

I predict another massive price cut ($225 WiiU basic/$275 deluxe) followed by another Ambassador program for us early adopters.
Iwata really needs to step down. I like Iwata as a person but he is simply doing everything either wrong or too slowly and he has been now for 5 years.
The WiiU hardware power, 3rd party support, online services, regularly providing good 1st party games for the WiiU: he has failed miserably on all counts. I don't know what other evidence they need. He doesn't have a grasp of the current market and he hasn't built any relationships with western studios, in fact it seems he has driven them further away.
WiiU should have been "Wii 2". Instead of the gamepad they should have put that money into making it have genuine next gen power (or approaching it) with a standard 10 button dual analog controller (like the WiiU Pro Controller) that also supported Wiimote+.
This is two terrible hardware launches in a row but the WiiU has the bigger problems than the 3DS. Japan won't save them and they have bigger competitors in home consoles.
They will probably give him another E3 where Nintendo will probably give another underwhelming presentation with a few scattered cheers for Smash 4 and Mario Galaxy 3 (or whatever its called) while they spend more than half their time on shit nobody wants like Wii Party U and Wii Fit U.

Honestly? I think Sony's ongoing strategy of moneyhatting indie devs to make PS3 + Vita ports is the best approach, and try to get people in via having a large backlog of games through Cross Buy. Might be worthwhile promoting PlayStation+ online in a similar manner to what's going on in Europe (a few gaming site takeovers, getting YouTube & Twitch ads highlighting the latest and greatest games currently on the service. Yes, that means Virtue's Last Reward is getting advertised in Europe), and get people to grow Vita backlogs that way. Sure, it won't stop the decline, but at this stage I don't think anything will. Just keep things ticking over, pander to the people who bought the bloody thing and try to get as much PSN Store commision out of it as possible.
For the Vita, the latter. For the Wii U, marketing. For both, lack of software.
I still believe that if a system has enough good games, nobody's gonna give too much of a shit how powerful it is.

The problem is finding the minimum level of power required to get said games in the first place. I guess it's not a problem if you think that Nintendo and indies can make a console sell 75 million units... or even 50 million.
He probably thought you meant the hardware itself, or the concept of the controller, which is what a lot of people in this thread have suggested. I still think those things are secondary to a system's hardware library.

Better OS is coming next week, so that's a non-issue at this point.
The games thing is subjective. I still think that the system has a pretty good library so far, but the drought is hitting hard now.
The price is the main issue here. Why should people pay $350 for the Wii U? The system isn't a bad product, but it's perceived value may definitely be lower than it's retail value, and that's tied to the software releases and Nintendo's lack of advertisement.

Best thing about Wii U is MiiVerse, brilliant sense of community from what I have experienced. If the system picks up I can see it thriving especially with the smartphone app
I'll take Gamecube sales as long as it comes with gamecube-quality games.

But that only matters directly to developers. Most consumers don't compare game consoles like they're comparing washing machines.

That's exactly what I had assumed he meant, and a lot of the posts in here seem to support that assumption.
I think the hardware is fine. The controller is fine. The problems are the software release schedule (and the delays of key titles), the lack of advertisement, and potentially the price of the system.

Nintendo completely wasted their year head start. Even Sega, in all their fucked up-ness, coming off the 32X/Saturn debacle, nailed the head start with Dreamcast. Xbox 360 also used a year head start to build a great foundation. Wii U is pretty much dead. It may not even hit Gamecube numbers and the third party support and game droughts will get worse and worse.

At that rate it seems likely. That rate wont be possible though with ps4 and 360s successor coming out though. It might pull ot off in march 14 though.

Can't do it so fast. They have completed games ready for Wii U that are coming in Summer after being strategically delayed to try relaunching it at E3 rather than try now. If they cancel the Wii U too quickly, its not like the drought of first-party releases will stop suddenly to a heavenly chorus.
It would be a major cash sink to cancel a system <1 year in and would kill Nintendo's presence in retail and in mindshare even moreso than now.
And Iwata will not go this year unless they have been training a successor in the background. The company might even make a profit this year if the yen and 3DS offset things. It's this upcoming FY that shit has to go down and hard.

But there is no evidence to support this. New Super Mario bros. U is using Wii assets, and Pikmin 3 started out as a Wii game. The Wii U's biggest problem is that it hasn't differentiated itself from the competition yet, and because of how gimped the hardware is, it probably never will. The tablet controller is too convoluted for the casuals to use.
I also like how Iwata uses it in his Directs to show the fans support etc and uses it as an indication of what the fans want like 60htz in PAL Land, Earthbound etc.
Maybe it doesn't actually make a difference, but at least it feels like it makes a difference.

Wii U needs a Fall Price Drop to go along with its game releases. The faster Nintendo gets it down to $249, the better. It needs to be at a mass market price while the other consoles hover around $400-500.
Also, games. E3 needs to be a thunder clap from the mountains tops in terms of killer software from Nintendo on Wii U.
