Boston: One dead, one captured, city re-opened

I had to step away to do some work, but is the FBI at your door/weed stash discussion still on? That deserves a thread. We had a fire in my building and I was thinking about that recently.

Maybe in some states, but not Massachusetts. Weed has been decriminalized for a while, so AFAIK the most they could do is give you a fine. And we passed medical this last election, so the authorities care even less. So nobody in this situation has anything to worry about concerning a weed stash.

What I don't understand is how law enforcement were in a foot pursuit with the suspect (meaning they were extremely close to him) but then lost him and decided to basically give up and wait until daylight before continuing the search.

Why not just bring in a bunch of K9 units, SWAT with nightvision, and helicopters with search lights to that area and try to find him immediately while they were still hot on his trail? They had a huge advantage at that time.

They basically gave him a headstart to escape and/or plan something new and they seemingly have no idea where he is now - a house, car, subway... And if he's holed up in a house now it's most likely a hostage situation which seems much more dangerous than just trying to catch him while he was running through the streets.

Because he had explosives he and his brother were throwing around all over. Including grenades. The cops had to move in slow within the perimeter to prevent deaths. Half of the town was asleep when this started, and he could have just ran into a random house and taken hostages.

Goddamn at people not using common sense in this thread.

It makes me a bit angry that there are such ignorant people in the world. But better to not pay any attention to them I guess.

They suck at geography, nothing to get too upset about. Except for maybe the "bomb them" shit, it's not all that offensive that people might get that wrong.

And what about the family of the missing person, having to deal with tens, hundreds of people pointing fingers at them saying "YOURE RELATED TO A TERRORIST" "I HOPE YOUR SON DIES" and so forth?

And what if the renewed interest in Sunil help his family find him?

Look the FBI ASKED for HELP. People tried to help. 99% of the leads called in where probably wrong.

I don't get the hate for people legitimately trying to assist police in tracking this guy down.

Yes. Exactly.

Unibomber. Atlanta Olympics bomber. Hell, I don't remember a manhunt like this after Oklahoma City.
Seriously? McVeigh was stopped for something unrelated on the road within 90 minutes of the Oklahoma City bombing. If he had shot and killed that police officer, injured his partner and ran- you don't think they'd have shut OKC the fuck down for a day?
No idea. Something less drastic and more secretive? Not releasing photos for example? I don't know. But looking at what happened in Boston over the last 48 hours or something, if I was a terrorist leader, I'd be rubbing my hands.
Releasing photos of the suspects to the general public is absolutely crucial in conduting a manhunt.

damn, that's basically my entire home country (Finland with 5 mil people).

crazy situation. totally crazy. ONE teenager can cause this total shutdown of a society of almost 5 million people!?

Doesn't really matter how old is he, since he was confirmed to possess explosives, full auto guns and grenades and did actually use them.

"Boston Marathon ain't a good place to smoke"

He tweeted ABOUT his plans. He tweeted DURING his plans. He tweeted AFTER his plans. And he's still on the loose.

Wow.

CNN showed a tweet he posted last year saying how the boston marathon isnt a good place to smoke. You've gotta be fucking kidding me.

Mostly disadvantage, but a chance of suspect attempting to move.

Mostly disadvantage totally though.

Actually, yeah, you're right. Not entirely a disadvantage because we're all led to believe that moving at night is the best way to avoid detection. He may get brave and slip up.

I think the biggest loss is that you lose a lot of civilian eyes and people tend to get jumpier at night. It could go either way with this kid because no one really knows what exactly his intentions are now that everything is going south for him.

Yeah this seems like an ideal situation to bring out the drones

Also, what are the chances that somebody else has already found him, dispensed with a little street justice and hidden the body?

Yeah all I'm saying is you setup check points, encourage the people in the neighborhood to leave if they can, search their vehicles on the way out.

With the people gone, you can infrared scan the neighborhood and find him fast.

If the guy managed to enter a house, running into the basement basically makes him invisible to anything but swat entering and searching.

Don't get the hate for the people who called him suspect 2? Really guy?

Sorry Sir, I must have forgotten my limits.

Honestly, who the fuck are you to quote dozens of posts in an attempt to post a derogatory comment towards juniors?

We know what has happened. We know who is behind it. We know what risks there may lie. But, perhaps, some of us just hold the right to be free from intrusion in your own house just that important that it makes us wonder, if it is truly worth it. It's a matter of principle, and there is no right or wrong. So don't tell me not to question certain things.

Back to the topic, your comment just annoyed me.

I'm sorry your feelings got hurt while the cops trying to prevent you from being blown up are getting murdered In cold blood.

Dude, you would be the worst terrorist fighter ever

Do you guys think the night time is an advantage or disadvantage for the cops?

Equal footing for both parties. Darkness conceals both parties. Now, use of lighting while labelled as an advantage, it still impacts the officers diminishing their abilities. I remember when I had night fire training with multiple cars with light bars flashing it can really throw off your focus. It can create "shadowing" that throws off your accuracy, focus, perception. Night vision is cool when you're in a majorly dim/dark area, but with lights flashing, it throws off this tech as well.

What would have been the true advantage, and deciding factor in this, is if they had Helo support with FLIR and similar technology. This would have been over now.

i think that tweet was from 2012. Not really referencing his attack.

I would not have even DREAMED they would have closed the entire city.

Unbelievable he hasn't been found yet. I guess he must have made it out of their perimeter in the confusion after his brother was killed.

Flir works just as well during the day. They should hopefully have the choppers up with flir already.

I don't remember media coverage like this after any of these events. It's like America has been waiting for a 9-11 part two, and this little ounce of it has people foaming at the mouth. It's a serious situation, I know, but the mass amount of attention to this is getting ridiculous.

Hell there's a bigger situation in West, Texas going on right now, people are still missing, yet no one gives a fuck. They prefer this live Hollywood movie instead.

So have we discovered what was up with the reddit guy naming one of the suspects Mike Mulagata?

Horrible practical joke? Honest error?
