Was just thinking about this today: how many days per person have been 'wasted'. Like a million days combined for Boston citizens and stuff? How many lifetimes is that?

I had to step away to do some work, but is the FBI at your door/weed stash discussion still on? That deserves a thread. We had a fire in my building and I was thinking about that recently.

Maybe in some states, but not Massachusetts. Weed has been decriminalized for a while, so AFAIK the most they could do is give you a fine. And we passed medical this last election, so the authorities care even less. So nobody in this situation has anything to worry about concerning a weed stash.

What I don't understand is how law enforcement were in a foot pursuit with the suspect (meaning they were extremely close to him) but then lost him and decided to basically give up and wait until daylight before continuing the search.

Why not just bring in a bunch of K9 units, SWAT with nightvision, and helicopters with search lights to that area and try to find him immediately while they were still hot on his trail? They had a huge advantage at that time.

They basically gave him a headstart to escape and/or plan something new and they seemingly have no idea where he is now - a house, car, subway... And if he's holed up in a house now it's most likely a hostage situation which seems much more dangerous than just trying to catch him while he was running through the streets.

Because he had explosives he and his brother were throwing around all over. Including grenades. The cops had to move in slow within the perimeter to prevent deaths. Half of the town was asleep when this started, and he could have just ran into a random house and taken hostages.

Goddamn at people not using common sense in this thread.

Seriously? McVeigh was stopped for something unrelated on the road within 90 minutes of the Oklahoma City bombing. If he had shot and killed that police officer, injured his partner and ran- you don't think they'd have shut OKC the fuck down for a day?

No idea. Something less drastic and more secretive? Not releasing photos for example? I don't know. But looking at what happened in Boston over the last 48 hours or something, if I was a terrorist leader, I'd be rubbing my hands.

Releasing photos of the suspects to the general public is absolutely crucial in conduting a manhunt.

Actually, yeah, you're right. Not entirely a disadvantage because we're all led to believe that moving at night is the best way to avoid detection. He may get brave and slip up.

I think the biggest loss is that you lose a lot of civilian eyes and people tend to get jumpier at night. It could go either way with this kid because no one really knows what exactly his intentions are now that everything is going south for him.

Equal footing for both parties. Darkness conceals both parties. Now, use of lighting while labelled as an advantage, it still impacts the officers diminishing their abilities. I remember when I had night fire training with multiple cars with light bars flashing it can really throw off your focus. It can create "shadowing" that throws off your accuracy, focus, perception. Night vision is cool when you're in a majorly dim/dark area, but with lights flashing, it throws off this tech as well.

What would have been the true advantage, and deciding factor in this, is if they had Helo support with FLIR and similar technology. This would have been over now.

Flir works just as well during the day. They should hopefully have the choppers up with flir already.

I don't remember media coverage like this after any of these events. It's like America has been waiting for a 9-11 part two, and this little ounce of it has people foaming at the mouth. It's a serious situation, I know, but the mass amount of attention to this is getting ridiculous.
