Did they mention why this clown got promoted? He must've been doing some awesome things in a business sense behind the scenes, because, well...

Doesn't this mean even less autonomy for NOA? That can't be a good thing.

Unless Iwata is stepping in to bring NoA round personally, streamlining the whole process, reducing inefficiency, focussing on building western relationships and setting up western studios.

That can be a good thing.

Yes, this is the same position the new CEO of Square Enix moved to before Wada left.

That's not to say Iwata will leave for sure, but if he does, this guy will likely be his replacement.

Makes sense. It will be very interesting to see if this puts a fire under Iwata's rear and gets him to start unleashing the hounds, or if he's already mentally conceded defeat and will spend more time prepping Kimishima to succeed him.

I doubt that'll be the case, I think they'll bring in someone already in Japan.

And people were already confused about whether or not Iwata was leaving his role as gobal president with the previous topic title, this will probably on mislead more people.

Not a single staple went missing from the supply cupboard under his watch.

I hope this means better things will come to NA.

So the guy that was CEO of NoA during the GCN years will be leading Nintendo now? I'm not so sure about this move.

Well, now I don't think it's a good idea at all.

People should be scared. Now if Iwata resigns as predicted, and this dude, the former NOA chief, takes over NCL, Nintendo will be as shitty worldwide as NOA is right now!

So Kimishima is the man who might be king, then.

Do we know anything about the guy's background?

1. Worked in high level management for Japanese banks for 27 years

2. Hired by The Pokemon Company as CFO in 2000

3. Promoted by Yamauchi to President of Nintendo of America in 2002

4. Promoted by Iwata to a place on the Board of Directors (not a senior spot), and Director and CEO of Nintendo of America in 2006

5. Promoted by Iwata to NCL Managing Director in 2013

it seems Mr. Iwata is preparing his exit, he is putting all the pieces in place, the writtings are on the wall (or in his actions in this case), I'll give him 1 year or 2 years tops.

Kimishima is replacing two people though. How long before that is fixed and someone else is promoted or brought in to fill one of the roles and leaving him with just one? With the issues NoA has had (either decision making by him or carrying out orders from NCL) why would they tap him as a potential replacement for Iwata though? That doesn't make any sense.

With Iwata now being the head of NCL and controlling things directly at NoA for the time being I wonder if he'll be spending more time in North America. Perhaps this will help with western third party relations by him actually being presented to talk with heads of companies a lot more.

Maybe they have figured out that North America is the most important gaming market (sales-wise) and are transitioning to where Kimishima can take over NOJ (because things are relatively fine over there) while Iwata assumes his position as President of Nintendo while taking over NOA.

I'm still confused based on how some people are posting in this thread. I assumed this did mean Iwata was done as global president.

It does seem like an American refocusing.

I'm so confused with the thread title and what it says in that paragraph. Anyone want to explain it to me please?

1. Iwata is still CEO of Nintendo

2. Iwata has promoted Tatsumi Kimishima (CEO + Director of Nintendo of America + Board Member)

3. Kimishima will take Mori's (General Manager, Corporate Analysis and Administration) and Matsumoto's (GM, Finance and Information Systems, GM, General Affairs, GM, Finance Department) positions.

4. Kimishima's official job title will be "NCL Managing Director," and he's in the top position to take over if Iwata gets fired as CEO in 2014.

5. Iwata, despite being CEO of Nintendo, will now be (CEO + Director of Nintendo of America) AS WELL.

6. Iwata, if fired as CEO in 2014, will still stay in the company as CEO of Nintendo of America.

OK, thanks.

This all sounds good to me...
Hopefully Iwata pulls through for us Americans! Maybe Iwata is planning on moving his family here!

What in the WORLD.

Hey, Nintendo, he's not the reason why anything was successful over there. And he's certainly not going to sell consoles over here.

I don't....I just....what.

This could be less of a promotion and more of a sideways punt to remove a perceived stumbling block.

I think this too. Kimishima is probably good at what he does but he seems more like a bean counter than someone to take an active role like Reggie/Iwata. I'm sure his new position is very suited to that.

Thanks for the break down. Still confused why they'd tap Kimishima though and not someone from NCL for that position. It's not like NoA has been this beacon of success.

I updated the title a bit.

The guy who was NoA's CEO was promoted to the Japanese position most likely to get Iwata's job were Iwata to leave, and Iwata subsumed his old job.

Is it possible that we could see...

CEO of NoA - Iwata (or someone else if he leaves in the financial year)
COO of NoA - Reggie
CEO of NoE - Shibata
President of NCL - Kimishima

...not too long from now?

I like Iwata. I give him credit for outselling the competition and selling more last generation. It was a gamble that paid off handsomely. They put less tech in and improved their position. They are in a better position for this generation where they can perservere and will avoid the Sega Situation. Not sure why people want him fired.

Because he killed their childhood or something like that.

So he wasn't responsible for the Wii and DS which were both globally successful (two of the best selling gaming hardware of all-time), or the 3DS which is currently on fire in Japan and chugging along everywhere else?

Gotcha.

This is even stranger than I initially thought. CEO of Nintendo of Japan and America at the same time? Wut.

Kimishima is 62 years old, at least according to his wiki page. I think his promotion might very well have personal reasons: He wants to move back to Japan and both Mori and Matsumoto retiring gives him the possibility to do so.

I'd hope he's not the "next in line". NoA isn't exactly Nintendo's best division and ... well, he's too old. Iwata being followed by a conservative man, who might very well retire in 5 years already doesn't strike me as the move the company needs to do.
