Nintendo ditches main E3 conference, still there with games, press events, N-Direct

Press conferences are for the mainstream media. Those people who write articles for customers Nintendo is looking to recapture. They're not going to watch a stream and report on it. Completely boneheaded move.

Good thing that the press will be going to E3 events held by Nintendo.

If some tech writer for CNN or the AP goes to the press events or something noteworthy enough to make it into a mainstream press article comes out of the conferences, yes?

I see it getting lost in the crowd much quickly in the dinosaur media than if they had put on a show comparable to Microsoft and Sony.

One would think that if they had big surprises in store that it would be business as usual. They are obviously shying away from the PS4 and Xbox 720, and it is not going to make people turn their head and pay attention to them standing in the corner away from the crowds. More like most will not even realize that they are there. If anything, they desperately need a conference to try and make some noise with this dead in the water system.

Good for Nintendo. If I were them, I would take a big chunk of the money spent on E3 (it has to be millions and millions, right?) and invest it in some of those big mall kiosk deals in major cities. Put the E3 demos, and demos of games already out, on those. Get them in people's hands. The press will shit all over Nintendo at E3 no matter what they do, so why not bypass them? Remember all the bullshit about "is it even a new console?" at the Wii U's reveal? They knew damn well what it was.

If this reaction to this news gets any stronger, I think Nintendo may have to come in and clarify what they mean. I hope they do, because some of the misinterpretations are painful.

If they are at E3 they will more than likely still be covering Nintendo.

I think Nintendo made the right decision. Iwata said it himself: they are not introducing new hardware. They are just going to be showing software, and lots of it. A 1 hour big stage presentation seems kind of pointless (much to the dismay of fans who like big reveals on big stages). Instead, it makes sense to have different pressers that will focus on specific content.

Besides, we have all seen how successful Nintendo Direct has been, and I am sure that we will similar presentations during E3.

Awesome. We'll be spared another cringe-inducing Reggie performance, Nintendo can do a better job of targeting its messages, and the big video reel that's supposed to excite consumers will be the same whether it's played during a formal conference or a Nintendo Direct. Plus they'll avoid the stage demo hazard where the awkward setup either introduces technical problems (Skyward Sword) or causes the Nintendo rep to play poorly and present the game in a less than flattering light.

I get that people are concerned that mainstream press won't cover a Nintendo Direct the same way they cover E3 conferences, but it seems to me that as long as Nintendo reaches out to the press and feeds them information that would be of interest to readers, the press will report it.

I don't see how backing out is going to help them.

The press narrative is going to be " MS/Sony came out with all guns blazing, showing off their super amazing next gen systems. Meanwhile Nintendo, conceding that it is now an also-ran in the console business, cancelled its presentation for the first time in 15 years."

Great, they're taking directly to people who own their systems. Everyone else though...

How many people who aren't really into videogames already do you think watch E3 conferences ? The people who are likely to watch a Nintendo E3 Conference are also likely to have watched a Nintendo direct in either case, with the only difference being mainstream press being more inclined to report on the news afterwards. Which since Nintendo are still going to have some events and presence at E3, alongside a Direct, I assume they will be reported on by the usual news sites. The only difference will be they aren't having a huge one time spectacle.

Nintendo's decision to me shows that they aren't really confident that what they would show will be really attention grabbing. Nintendo Directs have been decent for news but they are mostly viewed by really big Nintendo fans. Overall, it seems that even Nintendo thinks that the only people that they can attract the Wii U to at this point are big Nintendo fans.

Huge mistake at an E3 where PS4 and Nextbox will be shown.

Not if they don't have anything to show to compete with the PS4/Next Box. Play the game and get burned or opt out of the game altogether. Nintendo chose the latter. I don't think they had much choice in the matter. Whatever they could have showed at E3 would have been ignored/blown out of the water by whatever Sony and MS would've shown.

Didn't mention this yet in this thread (did in the last one) I called this ages ago...

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=47999061&postcount=31

I predicted it back much further than that even, but too lazy to search through half a years worth of posts to find it.

E3 is a dying event, it's been dying for years and Nintendo is just the first one to take a big step back from it. Honestly wouldn't be surprised if Sony and Microsoft follow suit (the fat that Sony did a full reveal of the PS4 already and Microsoft is planning one for the durango soon backs this up IMO).

Remember, E3 exists for only 2 purposes... To advertise this holiday's big games/systems and to make the people who run E3 a lot of money. Money the big 3 can spend elsewhere to get better coverage for less. It's the F-ing internet age afterall.

You have got to try with someone first. You have to start somewhere.

Sure, no doubt. But doesn't this just make the job harder?

A journo can just go to the Ubi presser, the Acti presser, the MS presser, the Sony presser, the EA presser, the Konami presser (lol), and the Nintendo presser, dedicated blocks of time and spend their remaining time on the showfloor etc. but presumably now would either have to fit in Nintendo mini-pressers instead, or if any of these sessions are concurrent then they become mutually exclusive.

We might not even get price and details from Sony and Microsoft.

Also both consoles will have been revealed before E3. This would have happened regardless and if it goes as well as they hope it will probably be permenant even when Micro and Sony have no new consoles to show.
The press is clamering for anything they can get. Remember the big stink raised over Sony not showing the actual device? Even if no pricing or date is given, the media will be eating it up. Keep in mind just about every major software unveil has been unable to mention a release on platforms aside from PS4 (BF4, MGS5, Etc. - none of the publishers can mention a release on next gen until the nextbox is unveiled).

Sony revealed tidbits, but it's clear they left a significant amount of information out intentionally. With E3 so close, Microsoft will likely do the same and while they'll show the actual unit/shell, they'll still keep it brief.

The majority of the eyes and chatter will be on PS4 and 720 at E3. Why waste a press event when you know you'll have a small slice of the attention? It's not like they can get by boasting Wii Ustats for 30 minutes.

Confused. Doesn't that imply the Nintendo Directs are largely reaching people who already own the system? That doesn't seem like a particularly good thing, or evidence of wide audience reach.

The wide audience reach comes from gaming media coverage of the Nintendo Directs. Just how wide audience reach of the stage conference comes from gaming media coverage. The audience for the conferences are filled with gaming media, Nintendo fans, and those interested. Just how the Sony conference is filled with media, Sony fans, and those interested.

People acting like the Nintendo Direct is reaching an audience that is different from those that attend the Nintendo E3 stage conference and watch it live don't make any sense.

They don't need to clarifying it, because people on GAF/the internet throwing a fit don't really matter. E3 will still happen, and their games will still be there. They're still hosting press events, that press will attend and then report back from. The Nintendo Directs will still screen.

People misunderstanding or disliking the news isn't going to stop it all from happening. It's not like press are suddenly going to go "I'm confused! Nintendo isn't at E3! Wargable!" and not show up to events they'll be specifically invited to, at an event they're attending anyway.

The events will happen. The games will be played. The reports will come. All irrespective of how people feel or think today. Whether or not it plays out well will depend on the execution, and nobody can know that until it happens.

Last time I checked it wasn't Nintendo fans sending Death threats and broken disks to Kamiya's Twitter.

If Nintendo has big reveals, they will get attention even if some of Gaf want to believe that with a confrence they won't. If they have nothing to show or it's just garbage it will be ignored.

How will they get EA to come out on stage and announce their unprecedented support.

I think they want to avoid this kind of things. Great announcements with so much power in them that could backfire because they don't get to be true.

And in the end this could be better, be won't really have to wait to have megatons in just a week per year, but probably once every two month or something like that, like it has been with NDs.

The press will get their own closed show. More direct, probably more hands on time.

I guess their strategy is "our games aren't as pretty, but they're more fun!" or something like that. I dunno. I hope we'll see Reggie, Shiggy and Iwata again next year.

This really is unfortunate. I was looking forwards to seeing if Ninty would bring it.

Will the smaller events be livestreamed?

I'm not going to search this information out. I don't particularly care for Nintendo style games and people like me are not going to spend the time looking up individual games that we wouldn't have otherwise. Were these games shown in one video I would watch the other games like commercials and may find one interesting that I wouldn't have otherwise, while still waiting for my blackbuster.

Nintendo being not able to present it in main E3 conference doesn't bother me at all.

I really think Pre-E3 (or E3) Nintendo Direct is good enough.

Mr. Children Eater, your level-headedness in the face of stupidity from all sides is consistently admirable.

I hope Nintendo is the next Sega. I want to see a Zelda game with Lasers,Multiplayer Killstreaks.

No seriously now. I hope they can provide really awesome games to survive. I dont want Nintendo to die yet. I know that no E3 doesnt mean they are dead but they lose the attention that they got trough the years. Now they go silent on the public and just want to talk to the fans. Not the right way.

Or they could have just had events that didn't suck.

To me this reeks of them having no confidence in not having a shitty event, because not having an event at all is better than what they had last year. Which doesn't bode well for announcements.

They were already moving in this direction. And to be honest, who cares what type of venue/event the announcements are made. Just as long as we get them.

This thread is some of the best shit ever. I hope E3 is the same exact format for the next 50 years and nobody tries to change it once ever.

When I look back at the past 5 years of E3 conferences, they mostly blew balls, last year and the year prior being absolutely abysmal. It's about time someone decided to change it up, but of course its obviously just herp derp ninderptodo.

You won't be given a choice to know unless you have selective blindness because Nintendo will have tons of E3 coverage and it will be all over Gaf's front page, and since your posting here you will see it.

But there will most probably be an E3 Direct where Iwata will go through their whole future line-up in one video.
