Nintendo ditches main E3 conference, still there with games, press events, N-Direct

Fuck.. that's no fun. The live antics, hype, hype deflation and general top quality banter is half the appeal of E3. Did no one tell Nintendo this?? D:

Sure, no doubt. But doesn't this just make the job harder?

A journo can just go to the Ubi presser, the Acti presser, the MS presser, the Sony presser, the EA presser, and spend their remaining time on the showfloor etc. but presumably now would either have to fit in Nintendo mini-pressers, or if any of these sessions are concurrent then they become mutually exclusive.

That implies that Nintendo is going to have multiple press events and we do not know enough about their plans yet. The quote in the OP implies that there will be one event for distributors and one for the press.

If this reaction to this news gets any stronger, I think Nintendo may have to come in and clarify what they mean. I hope they do, because some of the misinterpretations are painful.

Nintendo has already said what they mean, people just aren't reading it. The transcript is plainly obvious.

This thread is some of the best shit ever. I hope E3 is the same exact format for the next 50 years and nobody tries to change it once ever.

When I look back at the past 5 years of E3 conferences, they mostly blew balls, last year and the year prior being absolutely abysmal. It's about time someone decided to change it up, but of course its obviously just herp derp ninderptodo.

I nearly punched the screen during Wonderbooks 15 minute presentation, Nintendo Land's botched showing (he just kept explaining the fucking rules to Ghost Mansion...) and the Usher/Prometheus commercials in Microsoft's. If that shit gets cut out this year, I'll be happy.

I hope Nintendo is the next Sega. I want to see a Zelda game with Lasers,Multiplayer Killstreaks.

No seriously now. I hope they can provide really awesome games to survive. I dont want Nintendo to die yet. I know that no E3 doesnt mean they are dead but they lose the attention that they got trough the years. Now they go silent on the public and just want to talk to the fans. Not the right way.

This would be pretty hard for them to do given they are still having multiple press events with all the big websites and mags, you know the people who get the word out.

Could this be a tacit admission of not having anything of interest to present?

Mario Kart, new Smash Bros. info, a playable 3D Mario demo, and possibly a new Retro game reveal are "nothing of interest", huh? Wow, guess Nintendo truly is absolutely fucked if that's the case.

(The first three were officially confirmed in a Nintendo Direct, for the record.)

Nintendo not going HD with the Wii has finally caught up to them and now both Sony and MS are a console gen ahead. The gimmick to get all the old people in gaming has run it's course. Lack of true Wii U support tells me they are finished.
I think there is some truth to this point. The next month will reveal whether Nintendo actually has a stellar line-up or, as Edge claimed, their previous big Wii U Nintendo Direct was merely a firing of vaporware cannons.

Based on everything that has happened so far with the Wii U, I'm not yet convinced Nintendo made the necessary preparations for the transition to HD. I think they may have been counting on mediocre software like Nintendo Land and shovelware like Game & Wario pushing the console's sales as it did with the Wii. I personally hope that I am wrong and Nintendo has some shocking announcements over the next month, because I really don't think that titles like SSB, Pikmin, etc. will be enough to make the Wii U successful this holiday season.

Didn't mention this yet in this thread (did in the last one) I called this ages ago...

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=47999061&postcount=31

I predicted it back much further than that even, but too lazy to search through half a years worth of posts to find it.

E3 is a dying event, it's been dying for years and Nintendo is just the first one to take a big step back from it. Honestly wouldn't be surprised if Sony and Microsoft follow suit (the fat that Sony did a full reveal of the PS4 already and Microsoft is planning one for the durango soon backs this up IMO).

Remember, E3 exists for only 2 purposes... To advertise this holiday's big games/systems and to make the people who run E3 a lot of money. Money the big 3 can spend elsewhere to get better coverage for less. It's the F-ing internet age afterall.
By your link you predicted they'll almost skip E3 and give most info pre and post E3, we're seeing that they're still at E3 and during E3 just in different format...

I'm not going to search this information out. I don't particularly care for Nintendo style games and people like me are not going to spend the time looking up individual games that we wouldn't have otherwise. Were these games shown in one video I would watch the other games like commercials and may find one interesting that I wouldn't have otherwise, while still waiting for my blackbuster.

I never did that for a 2-hour Sony/Microsoft E3 conference either when I just owned a Nintendo console. I'd watch the trailers of a few key games.

If there's something unexpected that's great, you're still going to hear about it since you care enough to post on GAF and read the news.

They don't need to clarifying it, because people on GAF/the internet throwing a fit don't really matter. E3 will still happen, and their games will still be there. They're still hosting press events, that press will attend and then report back from. The Nintendo Directs will still screen.

People misunderstanding or disliking the news isn't going to stop it all from happening. It's not like press are suddenly going to go "I'm confused! Nintendo isn't at E3! Wargable!" and not show up to events they'll be specifically invited to, at an event they're attending anyway.

The events will happen. The games will be played. The reports will come. All irrespective of how people feel or think today. Whether or not it plays out well will depend on the execution, and nobody can know that until it happens.

And the last part is all that matters

It's uncharted territory for all.

This can blow up in their face or prove to be a successful alternative, but until we see how it all shakes out.. it's really just people trying to fit a narrative around it

I think they are just taking themselves out of the fight. Let Sony and Microsoft duke it out, we will just show what we have in a quiet way. I guess that's their strategy.

Nintendo lost their mojo. Unless they drop the Wii U price and have something that impresses
It's over.

Might be a better plan than having an expensive glossy presentation when your competition is launching brand new consoles. Still, it feels so weird. I even took a day off to see their keynote.

Ridiculous over reactions. They will still be there, their ND will still be part of the E3 atmosphere and coverage. Their other events will still get coverage if they bring the games.
lol fantastic avatar.

The wide audience reach comes from gaming media coverage of the Nintendo Directs. Just how wide audience reach of the stage conference comes from gaming media coverage. The audience for the conferences are filled with gaming media and Nintendo fans. Just how the Sony conference is filled with media and Sony fans.

People acting like the Nintendo Direct is reaching an audience that is different from those that attend the Nintendo E3 stage conference and watch it live don't make any sense.
I really don't think press coverage of a live press event/major standalone event is the same as that for a dozen pre-recorded videos scattered throughout the year. I don't think journos from TIME or the NYT are watching via the eShop.
That implies that Nintendo is going to have multiple press events and we do not know enough about their plans yet. The quote in the OP implies that there will be one event for distributors and one for the press.
That's why I asked before whether this would be a singular event.

If it is a singular event, then it is for all intents and purposes an E3 press conference, just without the pizazz.

This will be the only year they'll do such a thing. It will be a failed experiment, will reflect poorly on them and next year they'll be back with a press conference.

My favourite bit of E3 is when MS/Sony demo a cool game at the start, proceed to talk about shit nobody cares about for 2 hours (Kinect, Move, Wonderbook, SmartGlass) and then closes with an awesome CoD gameplay reveal. Damn I love E3!!!!!1

A badly handled traditional conference could still blow up in their face. Even if reception of this E3 is shit it doesn't prove it was a bad move, they can only show what they have after all, and what they have isn't dependent on how they've chosen to present it to their audience. Now, if they show awesome things but somehow they don't reach as many people as with a comparable E3, that would certainly at least indicate this was a bad move. So yeah it will be very hard to prove either way as I dunno how you can measure how many people they reached amidst all the different outlets' coverage. For me and most people here it's of no real difference, we get the info online anyway, and for the rest, at least so far all we know is that they're still inviting the press to things and still have playable games as always, so for now there's absolutely no reason to consider it's a bad change.

Fantastic work on not even reading the thread title.

Nintendo lost their mojo.

Yep, thats exactly how it is, Nintendo has a serious case of erectile E3 dysfunction.

Great, they're taking directly to people who own their systems. Everyone else though...

I was rebutting your contention that the numbers were "pitiful" and limited to "100k fans." While a million or so viewers is certainly good for the sort of suddenly appearing Nintendo Directs, hopefully the E3 ones are announced further ahead of time so more people can watch.

The experience for the casual forum goer will likely be the same: a presentation (or a few) followed by reports from the show floor.

I would imagine this might allow folks from the press some breathing room. I'm sure some will be pleased not to have to be at the Kodak Theater at 7 o'clock in the morning after staying up all night covering the previous days events.

hahaha Nintendo did the same shit in their last conference.

This sounds like a great way to make any press they get from E3 incredibly marginalized.

No idea what they're doing. The entire point, like it or not, of E3 is the spectacle you make as a console maker.

This move pretty much guarantees they don't have any major announcements planned, e.g. WiiU price cut, console redesign, new peripheral.

Good for Nintendo. They've realized that the enthusiast press will post headlines and stories about their announcements even if they are made just online. They will be focusing on what E3 is about, and it's about selling the game to retailers. They don't need a press event for that. The more time they can spend showing off their games to retailers, the more good it does them. They won't have any mess ups on stage, and they will have individual videos of games on the Eshop for people to download right after the Nintendo Direct. You won't have to go to some website, wait for it to buffer, and see some crappy version surrounded by adds for different products. You'll be able to go to the eshop, que up the downloads, get them all to your system while it's charging, and be able to watch them in 3D.

Nintendo doesn't have a magazine anymore. It's no surprise that they are taking further steps to cut out the parasitic press.

This will be the only year they'll do such a thing. It will be a failed experiment, will reflect poorly on them and next year they'll be back with a press conference.

Read the writing on the walls. E3 has been dying for years... There was a reason E3 desperately tried to rework it's format a few years back, and that failed.

It's not just Nintendo though, normally the big console reveals are E3 events... not this time. Sony did a PS4 reveal already, and Microsoft seems to be preparing their own before E3 as well. Nintendo may be the first to announce they aren't going to be doing a big E3 event, but I honestly expect that if Microsoft and Sony don't cut them back this year, they will by next year.

Events are still being held.

I'm really starting to worry about some of you.

Yeah, they're definitely overestimating the appeal of these NDs. Sad thing is it'll be too late to change course next year, the damage will be done.

Have you been ignoring the Nintendo Directs? They make major announcements in them. They don't need E3 or a stage show to do that.

Just watch Clony and M$ copy Godtendo, their rebellious stance against the E3 tradition.

Trendsetters.

I like how people are assuming that this decision indicates a lack of new software to show.

That said, this is rather depressing. I love the crowd reactions and listening to Iwata make a presentation live.

If its true. I still dont personally believe it.

A part of me hopes it ends up being always on. That way I won't have to spend the money. Sony hasn't convinced me that the PS4 is worth a lick. And if Nintendo really is going to unleash all their hounds, I'd much rather get down on my knees and solely prepare for that glorious money shot.

It's a reference to Chad Warden. Get cultured

Oh I see.
