Now. Now is the time that I can say that MS is going in as the underdog on GAF. I got shitted on the first time but a few months later it's undeniable. I'm very curious to see how it plays out. I'm putting money down day one for a PS4 but I refuse to count MS out until I have the whole picture.
Yup, that sounds like the sane thing to do. Now let me ask you, if MS does indeed require mandatory online connection to play games as well as block used games, will you still put money down for a 720?

MS staff respond to any rumors, including Xbox,Windows,Office etc

Needs Don Mattrick's face at the end!! Or 'big steve'

PS4 reveal also had the element of surprise, NO ONE saw it coming - and then there was that teaser video which absolutely ignited hype. Due to the nature of revealing second, MS reveal is thought more of 'an answer to' Sony rather than the first glimpse of next gen. Plus there is the plethora of negative rumours surrounding the next xbox too, which all combines to form a much more subdued reaction imo.

Sony dealt with its fair share of negative rumors before the reveal too, you know.

But Sony also had hilarious google ads on GAF, and a sweet little trailer to hype up their fans. Sony was youtubing, twittering, emailing, and engaging their fans all the way up to the reveal. They even did the history of playstation video series. They used smart marketing phrases like "see the future of playstation" and "be the first to know" right from the start.

Microsoft has a low-profile invitation acceptance page, and is leaving it to games media to spread the word.

The nature of things, though, is that Sony went first. What people care about now is how MS will compare because there's something to compare them to. Had MS gone first, their reveal would be discussed heavily in the Sony reveal thread.

It be how it is.

I don't get it?

woke up to that picture and have been wondering.
- but that looks like x360 controller
- maybe it's less bulky...
- ...no wait, it's the same
- what happened to renamed buttons ?
- exact same buttons and mic port at the bottom, that's strange
- wait. In white ? i don't see Microsoft launching a white console again
- credit card must be there to show the controller's size. Maybe it's smaller ?

Took me 1.5 hrs to understand the joke of that being a credit card reader.
HEH.

Also, the announcement is kinda underwhelming.

MS: Heres a jpeg about an invitation. Weeee!!!

Maybe they'll ramp it up in the next few weeks.

Also, that day and time is PISS FUCKING POOR. 1pm on a Tuesday? Seriously?

Also I guess while I'm posting tweets

I admire this kind of dedication I guess. IGN said their Xbox reveal coverage will be like their PS4 reveal coverage "times 6 or 7"

Also LOL @ the reply tweet "Start the Pre Show now"

Yeah the Xbox announcement with no video attached or anything is kinda subdued and formal. Even the invite page is bland and unexciting as fuck.

YOU ARE SO DAMN RIGHT.

The reason this thread is the way it is nothing to do with the facts that:

MS have let first party support for the 360 die
MS have not bothered to engage with their audience and challenge any negative rumours
MS's own staff haven't told us to 'Deal with it'
MajorNelson has been unwilling or unable to comment on Durango, but was bitching about the Sony reveal within minutes.... wasn't it Microsoft who used to allude to 'Sony getting their own house in order' rather than commenting on MS's plans?
That their very own text for the reveal prioritises TV and Entertainment
That gamers do not want a Kinect 2 but will have to stomach the cost of one regardless
No one wants always online - if that wasn't true they could simply say it and it wouldn't reveal anything.

No... it's got nothing to do with any of that... its that Sony and Nintendo fans don't respect console launch threads.

Get a fucking grip.

A lot of the people worried / concerned actually own both systems... personally I want both of them to be good and would have put money on things being the other way around.

At this point (and of course it could all change) it feels like Sony have changed their culture and taken MS totally off guard.

The run up to 360 was a feeding frenzy of one amazing rumour after another... The run up to Durango has been one of 'WTF' rumours. That is what is actually going on and MS have done nothing to stop it.

Ninja you're either clearly biased towards Sony or completely oblivious to how things work in the gaming market

I love how you're bad talking Major Nelson for not saying anything about Durango. He is a Microsoft employee, he would lose his job if he did so.

First party support was clearly moved over to next generation development, we already know of quite a few first party studios working on next-gen titles for Microsoft excluding 343, T10, RARE and Playground Games.

Microsoft never comments on rumors for unannounced products, negative or positive, not even a forum like NeoGAF is going to change this.

Microsoft considers gaming as entertainment so saying "entertainment and TV" includes gaming for them.

The last two points are baseless rumors with no evidence to stand on, we have no evidence that every console is coming with a Kinect or that it will be always-online.

So much for your list of "facts", seriously why don't you go hang out in the PS4 reveal thread you'd fit in better there...

Considering every major tech blog now has a article based on this JPEG I would beg to differ.

For NeoGAF maybe but for the other 99.9% of the Xbox gaming community the rumors will have no effect on them watching the reveal or that Sony revealed first.

This idea that because Sony revealed first is somehow going to take away from a Xbox reveal is hilarious. This might mean something if Xbox didn't have a following but they have millions of people that want to see the next Xbox no matter what Sony has shown.

Sony dealt with its fair share of negative rumors before the reveal too, you know.

It be how it is.

You must've been on a different NeoGAF if you thought the PS4 had any kind of bad rumors compared to the new Xbox. Only NeoGAF compares about comparing the rest of the gaming community are going to watch it to see the new Xbox.

I don't think so. I don't think that is true in the least. For years, Sony was utterly shat on by Gaffers. 599 starting it all and it seriously snowballed from there. It wasn't until Uncharted 2 released until things started to look up. Microsoft brought this on because of their past two E3 performances.

Honestly Wreckage? C'mon now...

For me both Sony and MS event not really good time
Sony=7am
MS=1am
Well maybe Sony's event good for normal people,MS's event good for neet in my country

This wasn't a announcement smart guy, these are invitations for the press...

DERP really?!!

It is an announcement to the world about the new Xbox. That jpeg is part of it. If it wasn't, then it would literally be a paragraph written on Major Nelsons blog, making this 10x sadder.

It's also big on the dashboard and on xbox.com
I agree that it is very "subtle" without much fanfare.

PS4 was really exciting because it was the absolute first glimpse of the next few years of graphics.

I think Watchdogs at last year's E3 took a lot of impact from what Sony was able to show. MS probably won't be able to score in that department either. But they do have the advantage of being able to surprise with new IP's due to the lack of established first party franchises.

Also, that day and time is PISS FUCKING POOR. 1pm on a Tuesday? Seriously?

I don't know about tuesday, but time is very good and i think it was chosen carefully.

People in the US can watch it live during lunch break.
People in Europe can watch it live after work.

I had to stay up till 4 am to watch Sony event, it's good that Microsoft thought of U.S. and Europe for once.

Nice to see the next-gen puzzle finally coming together. Not sure if I will watch the livestream, but I hope their event will be as interesting as Sony's one was.

Who? people on the forums?

Im sorry but the market does not follow internet forums trends.

Precisely. None of the rumors or nonsensical ramblings and rants from what I honestly believe is, without doubt, a heavy concentration of people that really couldn't care less about whatever the next Xbox has to offer, have managed to do much of anything to dull my excitement for the next Xbox, and I'm sure the same is true for many others. I'm extremely excited to see what Microsoft has in store, just the same as I was for the PS4, and the Wii-U before it. Unlike some, I still haven't lost faith in the Wii-U's ability to end up being a fantastic machine.

For one reason or another, there are just some people who are emotionally invested in the failure of one or more console platforms, and things will, unfortunately, always be this way. It isn't enough for them to have fun with whatever they end up choosing. Apparently more than half of the fun is also watching something they refuse to support for one reason or another fail, that way they can feel better about their own purchase.

Its good for Euros. I am not doubting that.

But I don't buy the American one. People in California and Washington have lunch at 10am?

People have 1 hour lunches? People eat their lunches at 1pm-2pm?

A Cirque du Soleil performance with the announcement of the announcement JPEG flashed as it reaches its peak.

I dunno man. Something to spur the base. I mean, I generally enjoy the Xbox. But when I see this thread fall off the front page, it kinda sucks. People should be pumped, but its pretty quiet around here. Gonna try and keep it bumped up for a while.

Well actually i remember every MS's E3 event were morning 9-10am PDT,that means it's good for EU every time
Nintendo's E3 is morning time at PDT too i think

Yes jobs usually give a hour lunch so they don't have to give any other breaks during the day.

Well, I've learned that discussing anything Xbox on GAF is often rather pointless and an exercise in frustration, especially if it involves Kinect (cue Bender GIF/The Wrestler GIF/Kudo GIF or whatever those folks find hilarious these days). I'm very pumped personally, but I feel little need to make a ruckus on GAF or any other forum because of it. I guess I'm past that. Perhaps other people are, too.

So did Sony change the ram because of the rumored Xbox having 8 gigs or was it for other reasons? I'm completely ignorant on the issue and am genuinely curious.

Sony was rumoured to have 4GB all along.

The 8GB was a last minute change. It is assumed, and that's all, that that change was to 'match' the 8GB the Xbox was rumoured to have.

Joe Schmo doesn't give a shit about DDR3 vs GDDR5, but it's not a good look to have 4 on your console vs 8 on the competition. By having 8GB of GDDR5, Sony gets to tick both boxes.

Good move by them.

Just listened to the Podcast.

They have something HUGE planned.

Words to the effect of: "Even if our coverage sucks, this will single handedly save it".

well, yes, the US include many different time zones, but i think this is probably the best compromise they could come up with.

People wondering why the xbox announcement isn't as hyped as Sony's; now you know why it was good for Sony to go first. The excitement from that announcement can't be repeated. Has nothing to do with fanboys in this thread. If MS announced first it would be the same for Sony.

That's also why you're not seeing anything from other sites like it was for PS4.

seeing that every website on internet is doing articles and every forum have 2 3 or more threads that talk about a new xbox jpg...i dont see this event not being hyped..just the opposite

u forgetting that ms and sony share ..+ or - the same market...and that theres a big difference between reveal and release....for what we know could possible that ms release xbox before ps4

i really dont see any marketing advantage showing a console (well they didnt show the console itself) ..i mean ..talking.. about a console months before ur competitor if u go to realease it in the same timeframe...

now the hype train for the ps4 is slowing to let run the xbox hype train....and im sure sony will be forced to do another show before the e3...( they r doing another in brazil i think)
maybe sony gone first coz they know xbox was more powerfull and so everyone will say "they modified the project after the sony show"...as is already happining on gaf or just to take some hype before the xbox get all the scene
maybe ms totally lose his head and is going out with a underpowered console based all on vod that block used games...make u pay for multiplayer that dosnt work if u arent connected with a "always on" function and force u to have kinect plugged and obv this will leave sony dominate the console market again (i would not put a cent on this theory...really a cent)
maybe the console will have +or- the same performance around 1.4tf/1.5tf (14 cu ps4 +4 that dont impact tf) (12 cu of a 7790 in the xbox) and all will be like x360 vs ps3 again

all will be based on ads later in the release time and will be based on how much company spend in this.......but if sony go out with another scary baby ads...i really dont think they will do better than ms

What a bunch of ass you patronising twat. Please note my avatar is kaz AND cortana and my favourite game, bar none, is halo.

Major Nelson has ignored the complaints and concerns of Xbox Fans but been only too happy to comment on Sony. His job is community liaison - he doesn't have to tell people anything fundamental about strategy to calm people's fears... the only logical reason for silence in the face of quite a bit of backlash is if the rumours have at least an element of truth and hence WOULD reveal something.

Having no first party exclusives while Sony still has several big ones is a mistake. Next gen or not. It gives Sony greater share of mind and share of voice in the gaming media.... and reminds people why Sony games are good while Xbox doesn't have equivalents at the same time. You're right MS are focusing on next gen, but the lack of Xbox support reveals how weak their first party base is compared to Sony or Nintendo.

"Microsoft considers gaming as entertainment so saying "entertainment and TV" includes gaming for them." Except in the same piece of copy they mention gaming separately...?

I have no platform bias - I will buy both of them at launch (if they are good). Just as I have with every decent gaming platform since the master system. I'm just concerned, as a lot of people are about the direction they are taking.

Many of the rumours about PS4 turned out to be on point... those same rumours have some pretty concerning things to say about Durango.

Being concerned about how Microsoft have behaved in the face of such a strong showing from Sony is not bias - having two strong consoles is better for all of us at the end of the day.

i think that sony had the NEED to make money in the last 2 years after all the loss with the ps3,move and vita
so its clear they would push harder than x360 with the ps3

all ppl think ms abandon the core market ..i think that after 5 years the market was stagnant and they just put out a device (kinect) to expand their market...sony tried too eh...the move+pseye was their kinect and im pretty sure that if sold 20 millions pieces at the half of the price of a ps3 (150 euro here in italy) as kinect did..u would have more wonderbook around.......is all about money i think

I'll reserve total judgement after E3. Neither of these companies are going to blow their load on a teaser event. I don't expect major, groundbreaking announcements until the E3 pressers.

well I am sure MS will have something big (or a couple of big announcements in these two events) but I wonder if I'll care? If it is Madden or Battlefield or both. YAWN in my case.

First party games interest me the most tbh

First party support was clearly moved over to next generation development, we already know of quite a few first party studios working on next-gen titles for Microsoft excluding 343, T10, RARE and Playground Games.
That's not really an excuse. Sony are still pushing out first-party support for PS3 for most of the rest of the year despite also working on their next-gen console.

I'm the same way. I get excited for every console no matter what (got a Wii U and I doubt I'll be able to resist either one of these either). Obviously I would rather hear good rumors as opposed to bad ones -- but it doesn't ruin my excitement. I literally was dancing around all day when the PS4 event arrived, and I'm sure I'll be doing the same on May 21st. How I feel after is TBD.

As far as how exciting the announcement of the announcements were -- I would go with Sony's only because it was a surprise (not because of rumors, at least for me). The difference was the May 21st date was leaked ahead of time by Thurrott, CVG and the like. I knew to expect this, whereas with Sony I didn't know the the PS4 would be announced on February 20th, so the teaser video popping up randomly on on Februrary 1st was awesome. So blame the insiders doing a better job finding out Microspft's reveal date for the feeling of intial excitement.

Yep. I don't agree with people saying May 21st will be the day where they choose. Both will have their big guns saved for E3.

Plus the PS4 event had the advantage of debuting what the next-generation of games would look like. With the Nextbox, we have a generally idea what they will look like.

PS4 was really exciting because it was the absolute first glimpse of the next few years of graphics.

I think it must only have had that impact if you're not gaming on a pc rig and already used to that level of graphics.

I don't think the next gen will wow as much because it isn't pushing on past good pc's but also because it's getting more and more difficult to deliver the wow factor when even the old boxes can deliver something as good looking as the recent Tomb Raider game and the likes.
