Kotaku Rumor: Microsoft 6 months behind in game production for X720 [Pastebin = Ban]

I wonder what consequences that will have for the hardware and heating issues.

I sure hope we don't get another RROD-esque fiasco.

Hopefully they figure out the heating issues, but Microsoft has always been a software company first so I'm not terribly surprised that they would be having hardware issues. Hopefully the people that made the 360 slim are still around.

Because 1.2TFLOPS is a lot when it's in a small Set top box that needs to be as quiet as possible & it's a SoC with embedded Ram (I think)

TDP of a 7790 is 85W, including the GDDR5.

The TDP of the next box and PS4 is likely lower than 150W. Can't see the rest of the APU + components eating 65W....the Jaguar's are probably 25W at max.

It's performance art in console fanboy format.
It's the only rational explanation for the drivel on that site.
When your first line is:

Microsoft working towards immersing you deeper into the experience while Sony is working on Facebook integration lol. It's pretty obvious which one is taking core gaming more seriously.

Yeah, I'm totally going to take you seriously. But then it says anonymous at the top which makes me think it was submitted, but then again why would you have that on your blog. Basically WTF at this entire page.

"If anyone will not fuck up the hardware reliability for next gen, it's Microsoft"

I remember someone saying that a long time ago. It makes so much sense. How could MS have trouble? Isn't this the #1 thing they should have watched for?

Is Kinect 2.0 just intensive? Does it pose unique design challenges?

Going by that rumor, it is in fact their main concern (or at least one of them).

That's just my opinion.

I don't think that's the focus of their announcement. If anything, they may demo NUI/Kinect, but they won't be doing full out game demos like you would expect from E3. I expect a lot more talk than show, especially considering how they've said E3 will focus on the launch lineup means they've probably blocked off most of that time for demos and most of May 21st for all the other stuff (specs, philosophy, integration, TV, capabilities, etc.).

Well, Phil Spencer said we will definitely see games on May 21st. Whether they're live demos or just gameplay trailers remains to be seen.

MS fucking up on hardware and software development at the same time, probably because their focus was spent elsewhere.

This...isn't an unfair point. I think software can happen to anyone. Its happened to all the big three. Launches are a knife edge and we don't notice Last of Us getting delayed or Luigi, but we'd notice if they were the planned launch games.

Hardware? Less of an excuse. Weird how Sony could just throw more in there and have it all in line. Really have to question whats going wrong for MS.

After all, PS3's initial output was nothing short of shitty.

Lair. Damn.

It's a good move securing good third party content while the internal teams work on something worthy.

One thing people don't realize is that a lot of the earliest PS3 software like Lair, helped moved PS3 development software along quite a bit. At the time Sony wasn't just investing in games, but those "shitty" games help to create a lot of the tools in the PS3 SDK.

This is interesting, but I believe MS can cover this vital launch period with third party acquisitions (be it exclusive DLC or flat-out exclusive games) they have more money to throw around than Sony.

I wonder what exclusives they are trying to secure. They're not getting CoD thats for sure, but I have a feeling they got something with EA thats not BF4. They can't be getting the huge titles like any Bethesda elder scrolls games or something as high profile that sells millions on competing hardware.

I'm a bit worried about ME series being one candidate, as it didn't sell that well on PS3, due to the lack of advertising and the absence of the 1st part of the trilogy. That would be one of the few exclusives that affected me.

In an ideal world we would all own both.

It's hard enough to find time to play games on one platform, let alone two. Personally, I wouldn't buy a system just for the sake of moneyhatted 3rd party exclusives, as that goes against my principles, and I'm voting with my wallet against questionable corporate tactics.

I personally don't believe this, because if this was true, why is the news JUST coming out, and why are Microsoft willing to show the Xbox so early already. They already plan to show the system and some games off in May, and show all the games at E3.

Honestly, MS too me is coming off as the most confident. They're being quiet about the whole thing, not letting anything bother them. They're coming off as the guy who doesn't need to speak tough, because he knows his actions will prove him right.

The announcement for the reveal only came out five days ago. But now that the cat's officially out of the bag, we're getting more and more people crawl out of the woodwork with more accurate leaks and more insights.

If you have learned anything with Nintendo and the Wii U, silence DOES NOT NECESSARILY equal confidence and preparedness.

Who knew systematically killing off all their first party dev studios over the Xbox 360's lifespan would have huge repercussions for their next hardware launch?!!

How am I supposed to read this?

What the hell am I reading?

I never suggested it wouldn't include games though.

I guess he reffers to:

Misterx: MS have to delay or not have to delay...it sounded like a typo in previous mail and the right meaning is "have to delay"..
Insider: Ok the fabs are working around the clock to get a wafers that are at 20nm.. its very very hard but it can be done.. Ms have hired 3 fabs to cut and run :) NO !! basically the console could be delayed Ms wanted to ship it out around September 2013.. But I anomalously think 2014 its the main GPU that is the problem.. the only way to get this part in to a console so power and heat are not a factor is 20nm. Even tho I think this hardware will run hotter then xbox/s I would say around 10+ degrees but it will be designed to move heat around so that no RROD happen or hardware fails. When I asked what cooling would this need the rnd said straight up leave that to us.. I now that enhanced new sdk official console spec will be shipping around November which will be test wafer cuts. But if they don't get the wafers sorted and miss Novembers target then they could run an extra 8 to 10 weeks. The first party kits with this new hardware are available for Request for 1st party developer to get but its a very limited number so only the best have them and even then only the best developers in the house can touch the tech.. no body is aloud near it. I know ea only got 720 about 1 month ago.. its only a mock up console but close to final target. we have it but not like EA :( And there not dieing its the ps4 that has the problems.. but that will be sorted. The problem is there pushing so much tech in to box's not much bigger then what we have now.. But its needed and they will both deliver.. :) So I think xbox720 = 2014 but early around march

But I don't trust mxm.

Everything about rumors about the next Xbox is negative, I really wonder what the fuck is going on over there

Fixed.

For m, the most worrying piece of this news report was:

"These sources have told us that, comparatively, Sony is in better shape and further along with hardware and software development for PlayStation 4."

That implies that Durango has problems with hardware. MS really doesnt need another RROD debacle or any other trouble with HW. As for software, some problems are almost alwatys present with console launch, but 6 months delay is a lot of time...

Durango has not games but MS has tons of money , so they can get 2-3 AAA games and lots of news IP on a few weeks..

I think publishers are much more leery about that given the biggest IPs ended up doing a bit poorer on PS3 when launched exclusively on Xbox (Bioshock, Mass Effect, etc.)

You said the event would be a vision statement and not game centric.
I said they'd be less game centric than Sony's announcement, not not game centric at all.

I still think games will be the focus, core audience and all that, but MS is one to brag about all their partners and talk about how it integrates into W8/Xbox Surface etc. and let you know what the capabilities are rather than highlighting individual developers and games in depth which is what they'll likely do at E3. I've no doubt we'll see multiple games on display, first and third party. Like it's been speculated before, MS is trying to tick every box at once while Sony is doing them sequentially, starting with games and going on to discuss "entertainment" stuff later.

I think we need a 'Sources tell me' thread from all the people on Gaf with info.

It's all over the place at the moment. Someone says one thing someone else contradicts them.

The only triple confirm in this thread is Durango being hot.

Don't know about everything else, but it lines up with the rumored delay.

They could definitely secure a new Mass Effect considering how bad sold on PS3.

If they are smart, they could definitely pitch proposals of exclusivity to some of the "important" games of current gen that sold way better on Xbox.

I'd probably agree with you on that, mostly because the next Xbox is less game-centric than the PS4 and the 360. But importantly, not at the expense of games themselves, which will be a very big problem for Sony.

It's better to treat all sources equally. I don't trust the anonymous forum filter more than I do the VGLeakz/Kotaku/Polygon/Forbes Contributer of the Week filter, especially after all of those sites ran the rumours that Paul Thurott decided against because of questionable validity.

Don't worry GAF, the hardware & software don't matter anymore in this day and age, all that matters is the TV & Heroes

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BpmGUJqK7-Y

MSFT has this wrapped up!!!

Oh fuck I forgot about that...ugh...
Seriously - if MS are lacking games at launch...delay or pull a Nintendo and talk reaaalllyyy slowly and get EA to strip tease for you. Whatever happens - DO NOT - start promoting your exclusive TV content...

Because of the contradictory claims over the last six months from some of the exact same information sources, in addition to one console not being announced and the other not having a physical form-factor shown, I don't know the value of work-in-process rumors when they suggest things as universal as the form-factor causing heat issues.

Blend in the psychological tendency in the community behind this industry for false equivalency, and I think these discussions fall apart, even when there's information which ends up being accurate.

My understanding (and I know people in software, not hardware...) is that they did infact have dev kits out early, as was Cerny's "developers first" focus, and that even the first dev kits had 8gb of gddr5... but they told developers that they final specs weren't locked down and that it could be as low as four.

Supposedly Cerny made a huge push in the lead up to the PS4 reveal to bump it to 8 to make a huge splash. By this time the rumors were already rampant that Microsoft were making a kinect/entertainment box and they saw this as a huge opportunity (ironically, considering the ps3 "only does everything"). The target price for the PS4 from the outset was between $299 and $399. Now, i've mentioned this before and people jumped down my throat saying "NO WAY IT WILL BE $299 DUDE!" Yeah, no shit, and they may not even make the $399 end of their goal, but that doesn't mean they didn't have a goal. And I guess the concession made was to drop the playstation eye from being in the box to being a day one peripheral to offset the ram costs... which i'm hoping is true because fuck a Kinect Jr.

Dropping the camera would be a huge mistake. If it is not included in every box it won't get much support. Microsoft would be able to use Kinect to steamroll Sony among casuals.

I planned to post a similar message but was grilled, again :p

I've heard the same things. But it also concerns to a lesser extent the PS4, which is far from being as smooth/ready, especially regarding dev kits, as the efficient public relation push that was deployed since February leads enthusiast crowds to believe. I've been told than the two are even more late for a November launch than Nintendo and their Wii U, considering that Big N were themselves as i reported on several WUSTs in rush mode.

It's troubling, i hope they will launch fully fledged and major-issues-free systems come November.

Wonder if it's possible if Sony and Microsoft thought Nintendo were going to release the Wii U in 2013 while maybe they're original plan was to release the PS4/720 in 2014.

Dunno if this is true. But if MS is experiencing heating problems they might have to cut back on hardware performance. After the Sony reveal, the thinking might have been: "we aren't going to win the powergame anyway, so let's prioritize the service aspect of the console". Sony got wind of this (I believe they know alot of stuff each other, they working with the same partners afterall) and they decide to play up the performance aspect of the console. Hence we get articles of Cerny and stuff. Then again this all might be BS.
