Kotaku Rumor: Microsoft 6 months behind in game production for X720 [Pastebin = Ban]

lol

A. it's called NDAs relating to future projects and/or hardware that tie my hands pretty heavily about what I can and cannot say.

B. we were finishing Fuse at the time and still supporting FFA (we STILL have a patch with a new map coming!!!). That's a lot to focus on!

C. I think I had a pretty thorough response within the bounds of what I'm allowed to say in the other thread.

I can see through your lies and deception >_>

I wonder if Microsoft will do something to try and control the message.

Gets me every time.

They don't need to damage control anything, because these are still just foggy rumors. Not to mention the only people who care about, or know of, these rumors are people who use video game forums or peruse video game websites for rumors, ie a very, very small minority of people.

Not to mention all of this will be erased from the annals of time once Microsoft announces the thing, and we all know what it actually is.

I like how this thread is now becoming the Insomniac doesn't have PS4 devkits thread lol.

I know. I feel terrible about this. I heard it from two from different folks (on two different continents, no less) but neither one of them work in third party relations. There are just as many rumors that float around inside sony as there around here. I probably should have prefaced that rumor better. There's one where I know it's true because the person I'm talking to is actually working on the thing in question. And then there's other rumors like this one which is just a friend passing on info he heard from in the hallways at his job. So obviously it's a flimsier rumor.

I believe jstevenson. I do think it's weird it's not on that picture (I didn't even know that) but, still, i was probably wrong and Jstevenson has closed this rumor that I started as far as I'm concerned.

True? That's awesome.

Yep. Posted on their Twitter earlier today.

Anyway, back on topic. I feel like there can't be that bad of a situation with games at MS since they've clearly moved onto next gen development a while ago. Ryse at the very least should be polished up since it's been in the works for so long.

I will bet cash that MS is 6 months ahead of sony on both games and hardware. When MS launched the original xbox they had about 30 - 40 titles in development at launch and picked from those what to keep or kill. Don't be surprised if MS is heavily invested in a number of titles.

I thought Platinum was missing for a second and almost ordered a Wii U. Thank goodness I was wrong.

If that helps you sleep at night I guess. This is a different game then the one hardware makers were playing when the OG Xbox launched.

So, MS is releasing their console in 2 months?

That sounds fishy as hell.

If you take all the rumors into account, perhaps not. Consider -

1) The next Xbox is rumored to have the Xenon CPU on a SOC with Jaguar and a new GPU.

2) The next Xbox is rumored to have yield issues this may be out of date, but as of last fall they were having difficulty fabricating the SOC -- the increased complexity due to Xenon being onboard could account for Microsoft's hardware not being quite as far along as Sony, who decided to abandon BC.

3) Microsoft's studios aren't as strong as Sony, and any projects they're currently developing with new studios have been fairly recent. You can't just throw a new team together in a year or two and expect them to release something that quickly. Only established studios and franchises can manage to do that. So it wouldn't surprise me to also see Microsoft's internally developed projects lagging Sony's studios who have been established for a while and haven't released titles in 2+ years.

Tells you that most here are very interested in the next Xbox
failing.
I think that a lot of people feel mistreated by Microsoft, and yeah, they're tired of it. My brother-in-law has always been my living stereotype of the "Xbot" meme. 95% of his game collection if first person shooters, he'll actually say "bro" to people, and his taste in games is whatever has been advertised a lot recently. So, I consider him a healthy case study on how the general Microsoft fanbase is doing. I visited him this weekend and he just bought a $1,300 PC. I asked him why he wasn't saving for the Xbox 720, and he decided that after all the crap he heard about Durango he'd rather just get a gaming PC. I'm not certain that the Xbox 720 is going to bomb, but I do think Microsoft has reasons to worry, and their customers have reasons to be irritated with them.

Disclaimer: I own an Xbox 360 (4GB) with Kinect.

I've always felt like MS wouldn't be launching the next Xbox till next year. They could easily survive this holiday with a cheaper main 360 SKU.

I can't see them letting this year slip by. Not when CoD appears to be launching a legit next-gen engine for Ghosts and of courses there's BF4.

Rare? Microsoft has them tied up in a basement.

Indeed, developing kinect Sports...is actually rather like being tied up in a basement, whilst forced to do strange things, by a sadistic madman:

"Buffalo Bill" Balmer: Put motion in the game...or else it gets the hose again!"

I think you're twice wrong here. For one, these foggy rumors get repeated so often that they take on the weight of truth. By tomorrow, people will be altering that PS3 has no game comic and posting it across reddit. Take the Orth debacle. If the narrative hadn't been constructed already, one idiot opening his big mouth on the internet wouldn't have been taken as 'OMG CONFIRMED'. So much that we started seeing controlled leaks via Verge and Polygon since then that help quell some of the more toxic rumors.

For another, you underestimate how loud and obnoxious the very passionate fans are, and the strength of a good meme. 2-3 weeks after the Orth thing I had colleagues come up to me and give their own very twisted take on always-online Xbox and Orth. They're not gaffers, they don't read Kotaku, but they got the news anyway. Not only that, but they were disseminating their (incorrect) version of facts to THEIR even less-hardcore (but console-buying) gamer friends.

Microsoft has done a pretty bad job of controlling the message via back channels. Until recently, most 'news' was bad, or at least taken in the worst possible light. On the other hand, the tone changed considerably once the Verge/Polygon started leaking out info, particularly regarding always online (it's still very confusing, since no one can agree on what the term means, but it's better than it was).*

*Hell, good spin can completely alter how reality is perceived. Sony did a great job selling the PS3/CELL's technology, to the point that to this day you have enthusiasts insisting that the PS3 is more powerful.
