Anyone who thought MS was going to let Sony walk away with better specs were kidding themselves.

I would be blown away if MS presents a 2.5 TFlop machine or something

Really? I was expecting 3TFlops since 2011 from the first leak rumour. I miss my 16 cores dream. Cell 3.0+ style.

Hmmm, Is the guy asking the question some random or anyone of relevance?

Does it matter?
Phil Spencer responded to me too.

I said it before, and I'll say it again: There will be a spec increase, even if actual real-world performance ends up a little lower or even with PS4. MS is far too reactionary to just let this go. They can't afford for every other tech site's coverage of the event to include lines like "many experts familiar with graphics hardware think Sony's hardware still has an edge in pure horsepower...". They want across the board gushing about the event with no caveats I'm sure. I will be absolutely floored if the specs are practically the same.

*I'm not privy to any info BTW

I love that all it took to send some of you into full froth was a bracket, a hyphen and a colon from Greenberg.

lol

That info was tenuous at best. I'm surprised it even lasted 5 mins.

I'm sure if anything has changed MS will be keeping things extremely close to their chest. I expect a controlled leak nearer the actual conference to wind people in even more.

No need for a controlled leak this close. It would suit them better to start airing ads for the event.

Yes. Really - compared to the average kinect game this is more compelling is what i said.

I didn't say i thought either were good... this is slightly less shit than anything kinect related.

Given a choice I'd rather have neither... if one has to be forced on me then I'd take Move... it at least has some traditional game applications.

I wouldn't expect Sony to show "average" PSMove games at their announcement either. Compared to your average PSMove game Kinect Sports is a technical masterpiece.

Both companies are going to have a focus on entertainment, motion control, and games. This is my opinion, but I believe Microsoft will do the first two better, and the third the same.

18 days now? 2 and a half weeks! Can't wait.

I know there's a lot of Kinect hate, but whereas you can only improve hand waggle solutions so much, full body tracking has just scratched the surface.

I just want to see new stuff!

I was just listening to the 8-4 podcast where they talked about rumors of these "magic moments" - video of gameplay recorded and shared.

Here's what I think this could be (no idea if people have already said this:

Instead of PS4 style sharing (though that could be done also), these "magic moments" would be predetermined moments/achievements in games, determined by the developer, that would be recorded and tied to your profile like achievements are. So you kill a major boss - during that battle the game is triggered to record, and when you complete it the video is saved and tied to your XBL profile. When you browse your friends profiles, not only can you view their achievements, you can watch videos of their completed "magic moments." Basically a new form of Achievement.

I dunno - could be cool.

Not bad. But I think that it would be in addition to user chosen vids. No reason to leave that ability out.

Firstly, link please.

Second, that is a pretty cool idea and it does seem like the natural next step for the achievement system.

Eh no real link. Latest 8-4 Play podcast, start listening at like 54:30. This isn't really what they say though (and they are just talking about stories they read). I just sort of thought about it and thought this could be cool.

We need kinect to do a holodeck

What good would it be to have holographics and be forced to use a controller?

no not really, too late for Sony to do anything. If both are in the same ballpark, then Sony could increase their clocks and get to 2.1 Tflops...I guess MS doesn't want that.

Yeah. I'm wondering IF MS did something, would there be time for Sony to counter-respond? Because apparently MS responded to Sony.

The difference however, would be nearly three months. MS event in late May Sony's in late February.

I dont know but at some point you know, like, production stuff would have to start. Months ahead of time. Maybe like June?

Oh, and on that note, might MS try to conceal any upgrades? What if they significantly upped the flops of the GPU, but simply choose not to mention how many flops the GPU is at the event? Say they just say "custom AMD GPU, 8GB RAM, 8 core CPU" and that's it? Just show games? Instead of revealing to the whole world however many flops they have?

Either way it would be hilarious if Sony revealed too much too soon, given kaz specifically talked about the folly of doing so. Cerny went everywhere and talked openly about his tech (which I actually applaud, so much better than the Nintendo way of secrecy, but could have it's downside)

No. If Ms really have the jump on Sony, it will be something like this:

It entirely depends on how everyone was making their console

If Microsoft was having multiple parts engineered in parallel while Sony wasn't, bad news.

If Microsoft and Sony were both engineering multiple parts in parallel... Then it could get interesting.

I see MS doing parallel development just because of how uncomfortable they seemed to get when cell was announced and the lack of options they had going forward. Sony less likely due to the added cost which isn't guaranteed to be necessary... But it is helpful in case you're blind sided and that $20 million you saved screws you out of billions down the line.

Update on the subsidized model:

Paul Thurrott ‏@thurrott 11m
By the way, I did screw up one thing: The $299 version of Xbox v.Next will come with a $15/mo XBLG subscription, not $10. Sorry about that.

so you basically end up paying $360 over two years (15X24)

so the total cost of the console would be 299+360=660, with two years of live.

Normally live costs 60/year, so you'd in essence be paying 660-120=540 for the console, a $40 premium in exchange for financing. Not too horrible I suppose.

More interesting is that Thurrott speaks very specifically. These dont seem to be just ballpark figures, they imply he at least thinks he knows these as exact figures.

Parallel development doesn't make much sense this late in the game. It's also excessively costly in terms of R&D and could lead developers astray from a target spec.

It's not like Microsoft didn't know what Sony was capable of, and while PS4 is an extremely well designed system, it's not pushing the boundaries of consoles in terms of power/heat.

If you know a general release date time frame, then both Sony and Microsoft know full well what the other is capable of.

The only miscalculation Microsoft could have made in their strategy is expecting Sony to release a lot later (2014+).

Ok - another one from me :
You remember Master_Jo who was banned in the 6-Months-Delay thread?
He was banned because he added "This is not the full story" to Thuways leak of heating problems with devkits.

He contacted me after his ban on Twitter and elaborated on his statement.
It's basically that he works for a big partner (nothing gaming related) of Microsoft and has heard from MS employees, that there are indeed heating issues but that the reason of this is an upgrade of the specs.

I don't know what to make out of this but I guess a mod could confirm if he is really working for an MS partner by the mail address he used for registration.

Please no RROD again. I'd rather have a slightly less powerful system.

I actually don't care about specs at all. As long as the game runs well and has a good IQ, I am all set.

I just want to see fanboy wars...

Well in order to have good IQ and runs well it needs to have good specs. I really never got that people don't care about the specs, but in the same sentence say they want it to run well with good IQ. lol

Parallel development makes sense if that was the strategy they STARTED with

You essentially take AMD parts already done, fuck with a few portions of the design (mainly in the memory controller)... Make a few engineering samples based on currently developed parts...

Wait until competitor announces... Choose part you like, scrap the rest.

Instead of the 360 path... Have an entirely new GPU designed for you and freak out until mass production day because of the crazy amount of debugging due to errata that keeps creeping in...

It's a little more expensive to do parallel. But considering how PC GPUs have left console GPUs in the dust, extensive engineering won't close the gap like before... So parallel can be very safe unless your competitor goes beyond your expected power envelope and thermal capability.

In a big industry like this, you don't want to take unnecessary risks.

I thought the current specs were good enough for 1080p and 30 FPS....

I am 100% sure it will get an upgrade
