The actual reason is that episode 9 would have fallen on Memorial Day. Blackwater was on memorial day and got super low ratings. It's not like they're bumping Game of Thrones just because they'd rather show the Liberace movie

Myself, along with his co-workers, had raved about the previous episode. Pretty much all of us telling him shit gets real, and it's a really good episode, laying big framework for what we assume is awesome stuff to come.
He watched it was and all "hurr just seemed like any normal episode :/". No amount of explaining it would convince him. He refused to admit there was any significance or importance behind the murder of the two Lannister boys, the beheading of Karstark, and Robb's new objective to ally with Frey.

Stannis is a great character. No one likes him because he is so unfriendly and serious, but he is obviously a skilled leader. He's also the true heir to the throne. He does everything right but still screws up somehow, I suppose a lot of people can relate to that. Plus he lives on an island within an ancient fortress, has a hot sorceress girlfriend, and a cool, nice friend with an awesome voice. What's not to love?

Sometimes I think the show is making Stannis out to be a bit of a nutbag arsehole, but I don't like feeling that way because I sympathise with his plight.

Sometimes I get the feeling he's just using whatever/whoever to get the throne. Like last week when he walks into his wife's room, takes a look at her candle alter and has a "oh no, not this shit again" look about him, like he doesn't really care about the god of light at all.
He looked horrified when his wife was speaking about Melisandre and the God of Light stuff.
I don't think he believes in it at all.

I get this too, but I think it's more regret of his investment maybe. The show struggles a bit to convey just how much time has passed in my opinion, and if you think about it, he probably spent a very, very long time in the company of Melisandre as they planned his attack on King's Landing. And despite buying into her Lord of Light shit, his attack didn't work. Cue burnings.
He's probably torn between regretting the Lord of Light path, and wondering if maybe he should have stuck closer to it, taking Melisandre along with the battle. He seems confused.

Last episode really made it seem like he kinda goes back to normal because Melisandre wasn't around. Kinda visiting his past, although you could see why he went with the god of light path due to his shitty life (crazy wife, stillborn sons, something happened to the daughter as well). Still he felt the urge to visit his family (and even apologies to his wife).
I agree that he seemed quite shocked that the red woman already turned his wife as well. More so than him it seems.
He gets serious bonus points for fighting on the front lines, a great, no-bullshit leader. The assassination of his brother was a dick move though. Not that he killed him, but how he let him be killed.
Also now the burnings, doesn't sound like a just leader. Both was under the influence of Melisandre though, as I said, I really want to see his leadership w/o her (unless he gets awesome super powers by her).

I don't have book knowledge, but if we're going to go off the series, and assume GRRM had the intentions in mind, then A Game of Thrones hinted at the idea when Bran 'dreams' of embodying his dire wolf after his fall. And that was published in 1996.

Just answering his date question:
It is alluded to but not fleshed out in the first book. It is elaborated upon more in the second and third book. So date wise that would be August 6th, 1996 for the first book and November 16th, 1998 for the second one.
The term was first mentioned in 3rd book if I recall, which was 2000. But like EatChildren said it could of been planned from the very first.
Fairly common fantasy skill.

Another reason I won't read the books. I can barely tolerate the season breaks in between the show. I can't imagine waiting 17+ years to finish a book series.

I never knew this. I'd go insane if I had to wait that much and probably even more for the story to end.
And now I feel bad for all the book readers that have been waiting so long for Martin to finish his books. All those comments about him being lazy now make sense to me.
What about when all of the books are out and the series is over?
Yeah, there's a good example of a spoiler; if this had been said last week, it would have spoiled Jon and Ygritte getting together. Even casual browsing (and commenting) spoils stuff.
