Finally got rid of my iPhone contract and have zero interest in Android. Can you Win 8 Phone users fill me in on what my options for turn-by-turn/maps are? Loving the look of the 920.

Nokia's Here map and Drive (which allow you to download maps so they can be used offline) are both excellent. iirc, they're based on navteq's maps which range from solid to excellent depending on your country.

And unofficial Google Maps app, Gmaps Pro. Online only though.

has calmed down a bit.
Viggle and FreeMyApps. In 6 months, I've gotten over $100 from those apps on a $60 iPhone 3GS and $50 from those apps on a Nexus 4 (it would earn about the same on a cheaper Android phone). Windows Phone doesn't even have those apps.

What do these apps do? $100 over 6 months is shit, seems like I could just wash a few cars on one weekend instead.

For what you're doing its quite a lot. Just install sponsored apps and get points which you can then redeem for gift cards. Numbles can probably explain it better. I barely used it back when I was still on my iPhone 4.

For FreeMyApps, I just download an app and play it for 30 seconds. They only have 2-3 apps a week, so I get $1 or $2 a week. For Viggle, you just let it listen to what TV shows you're watching. I follow the NBA, so it also gives me points for playing Fantasy Basketball. It's not shit because I don't really need to do anything special.

And since I also have other devices, or access to family members devices, I've been able to rack up a lot of credits:

Edit: Actually, it's more been like 3-4 months. I bought the phone in late-January or early-February.

Nokia makes great entry level phones. Problem is nobody wants a "Good enough for what I need" Smartphone. Everyone wants the best phone out there.

I think most people actually want a "Good enough for what I need phone". It's just that most people aren't tech-savvy enough to know how well any device fits their needs and where exactly the trade-offs are. Additionally, contracts contribute to obfuscating the costs of the phones. And carriers as well as marketing push people to high-end devices.

Over the long run this will change dramatically. Think about PCs. The average selling price for Windows PCs is somewhere around $400 and most people would never even consider a more expensive device (unless it has an Apple on it; Mac ASP is at $1000+). Those cheap machines won't be replaced after two years either, but people expect them to work for a long time.

If someone buys a high-end phone they are happy with and two years later even the cheap models are superior to that phone, at some point they might question whether they really want to spend $600+ for the next phone.
At some point, people won't continue to buy a new $600+ phone every two years.

Once again, you actually think the functionality of gingerbread is comparable to windows phone 8? When compared to high end android, of course there are deficiencies to be found in windows phone 8. I thought lower end android was universally reviled. Why are you defending a platform that's OS was released in 2010 to one that was released last November?

Yes. I had a Lumia 920 for 1 week, and got completely bored with the OS/apps. Live tiles are kind of a joke, and only being able to switch between tiles and all apps was too limited. Give me widgets, multiple home screens, launcher options, etc. any day. Even if it's on Gingerbread.

This is my third day using the 521 as my only phone.

Preliminary conclusion - the hardware is the best $130 - $200 GSM phone ever made. But...sadly Windows Phone is iOS without apps.

It's locked down, it's inefficient. Everything I want to do on a phone I can do the same speed or faster on Android. Sure the interface might be smoother on WP. But what takes time in using a modern smartphone is the number of taps or swipes it takes to do something, not how many FPS the interface runs at. And in WP I very often have to tap or swipe more to accomplish the same thing compared to Android.

It's too bad Android phones in this price range have garbage hardware and even more garbage software implementations and support. If you have to buy new, this could be your best choice. If not, just get a decent Android handset used.
