Messed up about the neighbors calling about suspicious activity, just needed one cop just to follow through and check the place out.

Is it some sort of privacy rights thing not to respond to such things?

Yes. If no one is home, you can't enter without a warrant. Same if someone answers the door and refuses to let the cops enter, too.

The cops need evidence or reasonable suspicion of a crime being committed to search without a warrant.

Anyone else of the opinion that there should be some kind of precedent for these cases in which whoever knows should be given the same sentence as the perps?

Do we know if family members were aware of the victims in the house? If so, yeah. I think an argument could be made that if you knew and could stop a heinous crime from being continually committed, you're at least an accessory to the crime.

It makes me wonder about their upbringing.
I think its pretty clear they all have severe untreated mental issues. Street thugs, well unless they're ransoming, or drug lords or terrorists, don't go kidnapping for a decade. These guys will definitely be screwed til the end of their days thankfully.

Also add quack to the list.

It's not the fact that they did give birth, it's that no one in the neighborhood heard it. But the guy above made a good point about soundproofing since the guy was a "musician". Also it's a wonder there were no complications considering I doubt these guys are medically trained or knowledgable and if they are goddamn.

I would also like to point out that childbirth isn't always like it is in the movies; even without painkillers, a lot of women aren't screaming their heads off during it. The room could have been soundproofed, they could have had been told to be super quiet under threat, we don't know.

From the reports coming out those alive kids are the minority anyway. One of the stations mentioned 5 pregnancies that never came to term because they were beat until they miscarried =/.

Pretty nauseating that they were forced to have this shit's kids. They'll never escape what that sick fuck did to them now.

One of the kidnappers uncles was just on local tv giving an interview. Very apologetic and says the trio pretty much had distanced themselves from the rest of their large family. Wouldn't come to holidays/events, etc.

They didnt even enter the house until late last night, a few hours after the police had the women out and the suspects in custody and the reason given was they they had to wait for the search warrant.

Wonder if it's the same uncle who at first said he wasn't even related to the guys. It just seems suspicious when there is already 3 guys in on this...

Out of curiosity I looked up Cleveland and sex offenders.

According to our research of Ohio and other state lists there were 1,377 registered sex offenders living in Cleveland as of April 25, 2013.

The ratio of number of residents in Cleveland to the number of sex offenders is 313 to 1.

=/

Yeah, never look up sex offenders in your area unless you want to be depressed until you force yourself to forget. I live in a town of like 7000, and there are around 700 here :/

Edit: Damn it, sorry for the double post.

That's insane. That's more than in Oakland or SF.

Just caught this on BBC News, this is really one of those cases that stun you - on one hand you have this horrific ordeal these girls (now women) were put through, but on the other you see the hospital photo of one of the captives smiling with tears of joy next to her sister. That is some incredible strength, how she isn't anything but a completely withdrawn shell of her former self is beyond me. Next level human spirit.

Also, they interviewed a neighbour almost bragging about the weird shit she saw (naked crawling, little girl in a window when the owner isn't known to have children...), what the fuck is wrong with people? She was asked if she did anything about it, her answer? 'I talked to a cop who told me to contact a detective, but I wasn't given a number so I was dissuaded'. I just...why would you even give an interview if you fucked up that bad?

Not to play at any sort of competition here but after this one:

Nothing surprises me anymore.

These kinds of stories are mind boggling. This might be even worse:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fritzl_case

Girl was kidnapped and locked in a secret part of the basement by her own father. The father faked that she ran away to his wife, and proceeded to rape her for 24 years, having 7 kids over that time period. The kids never received any medical attention until 2009 (when the guy was caught) and hadn't even seen the sun. Now the guy is serving life in prison WITH the possibility of parole after 15 years. Disgusting.

man, these stories are gut-wrenching.

I don't even know how to conceptualize how the women move on with their lives after being through that for 10 years.

Reports of screaming/banging from a basement and naked women crawling in the backyard arent grounds for reasonable suspicion? Legit question.

I agree. If I saw the things this neighbour supposedly saw, I would be hounding the police day and night to check it out.

The hell. How. These people need to be locked away forever. I'm sorry if anyone thinks that sexual sadists can be rehabilitated but I don't.

you didn't know about Fritz? fuck that was the first time I ever heard of something like this.

Anyway, sure these guys can be rehabbed, but then they can never ever join society again. We'll have to ship them to the Island. The one covered in ice.

I knew about him, I just didn't know that was his sentence. Ridiculous.

Anyone bring this up yet?

Wow, possible child of incest? This story is sooooo messed up on every level. I am so glad they found the girls alive, I remember them all in the news a while back. Their lives are ruined on some level forever. Don't even know where to begin with these pieces of shit who held them captive.

This is just how a lot of European countries interpret human rights laws. People like that are never released as every time they come to the end of their sentence, it's just extended. A judge shouting "Life! Without the possibility of parole" is better kept to TV shows, as it can be construed as cruel and unusual punishment.

I'll bet my life on it that he'll never walk freely again. Especially not after massive media coverage this case got.

Same thing happened with Marc Dutroux. They'll just decide that he is still a danger for society and keep him imprisoned.

Edit: as said above.

Wow, just got to the Mr. Ramsey video. Just another one of those great videos. Him and the Homeless "Smuuuaaaash" Hatchet guy, need to get together and film the next Lethal Weapon movie.

I'm not sure I'd ever heard about that.

It made me extremely agitated to read the entire Wiki page. But this:

According to a March 2010 article in The Independent, Elisabeth Fritzl and her children coped with their recovery remarkably well, given the difficult lives they endured for so long.[63] According to Fritzl's sister-in-law, Christine, Elisabeth enjoys spending her time shopping, taking frequent showers, and driving. She has passed her driving test without difficulty. Her relationship with Thomas, one of her bodyguards, was reported to be ongoing, with him becoming a big-brother figure to her children. All of Elisabeth's children have developed normal sibling relationships with each other, and after having trouble dealing with the traumatic events, the three "upstairs" children slowly began recognizing Elisabeth as their mother. The children enjoy being outdoors, playing video games, and spending time with their mother and grandmother. Despite their strained relationship, Elisabeth and her mother Rosemarie started visiting each other more, and Elisabeth has reportedly forgiven her mother for believing her father's story and not pursuing the matter further.
Was a huge relief and made me feel somewhat happy. Before that paragraph I'd gotten the impression that they were all irreparably fucked.

Interesting to see how this insight kind of explains how he was capable of such a horrible and premeditated act:

Later, he expressed a negative opinion of his mother and claimed that "she used to beat me, hit me until I was lying in a pool of blood on the floor. It left me feeling totally humiliated and weak. My mother was a servant and she used to work hard all her life, I never had a kiss from her, I was never cuddled although I wanted it - I wanted her to be good to me." He also claimed that she called him "a Satan, a criminal, a no-good", that he "had a horrible fear from her". In 1959, after Fritzl had married and bought his house, his mother moved in with them. Over time, their roles reversed, and his mother came to fear him. Eventually, he also admitted he had later locked his mother in the attic and bricked up her window after telling neighbors that she died, and kept her locked up until her death in 1980. It is unknown how long Fritzl kept his mother locked up in his attic, but newspapers have speculated that it may have been up to 20 years.

The more that I think about it the more I think the entire family, son and daughter, of Ariel Castro were in on this. There's just too many coincidences.

Holy...I don't advocate torture, but...there's some medieval shit these guys deserve until the end of their days. That's beyond evil.
