Cleveland: Missing teens Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus, Michelle Knight found alive

Still don't get how Amanda gave birth in a house and no neighbors heard screaming during the birth, only thing I can think of is soundproofed walls or something.

I can't wait for an update, this is just baffling.

Eh women often aren't screaming at the top of their lungs while giving birth. And if anything he simply gagged her if she was being loud. If she was in the basement, that alone would cut out alot of the sound. Surely while the guy was around he likely would threaten her to keep quiet with violence.

So same Pedro from that newscast a year ago...fucking crazy. Also not sure due to unreliable sources but apparently Ariel Castro attended mutiple vigils held for the DeJesus girl back when it first happened...

I always wonder what these kidnappers end goal is. They keep their captives for years, get them pregnant, and then what? Eventually they have to know it's not going to end well for them and the shit just snowballs out of control.

there is no goal aside from treating a human as garbage.

I don't think there's an end goal, to do some crazy shit like this there doesn't seem to be.

Charles is quite a character. It must so surreal for the women today being home after all they've been through.

My god that Jaycee story is chilling. Nice to see she got a 20 million dollar settlement from Cali, but 20 million aint gonna erase those memories unfortunately.

Im wondering if these girls will end up getting some sort of state settlement as well?

Just saw an article on USA Today that said the 3 women had 5 children during captivity, and it seems like 4 of them didn't make it.

Yeah, earlier today I thought I heard on one of the news stations mention the police were going to start digging up his backyard to search.

I doubt this guy just happened to start kidnapping people at 42 either. They're going to be looking deep into this guy's past that's for sure.

A settlement for what?

Damn, guess the rumors ended up being true. That's just sad.

Not only that, but to not kidnap anyone for 42 years and then kindap a girl a year for three years and then suddenly stop? Yeah, I'm guessing there are some more people in there somewhere.

A settlement for what?

In July 2010, the State of California approved a $20 million settlement with Jaycee Dugard, to compensate her for "various lapses by the Corrections Department [which contributed to] Dugard's continued captivity, ongoing sexual assault and mental and/or physical abuse." The settlement, part of AB1714, was approved by the California State Assembly by a 70 to 2 vote, and by the California State Senate by a 30 to 1 vote. San Francisco County Superior Court Judge Daniel Weinstein, who mediated the settlement, stated that the settlement was reached to avoid a lawsuit which would be a "greater invasion of privacy and greater publicity for the state."[91]

The bill was signed by California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger on July 9

Maybe it will happen to these three as well?

There's no long-term plan. They just don't think that far in advance.

I know about Jaycee but that doesnt apply to the Cleveland girls.

People that do this kind of thing don't think rationally.

Wow, this is unreal... I'm feeling good that they are free, but man, I feel bad inside for knowing shit like this happens, that people are capable of such monstruosity. :(

Neighbours say they had previously called police
Two neighbours said they were alarmed enough by what they saw at the house to call police on two occasions.

Elsie Cintron, who lives three houses away, said her daughter once saw a naked woman crawling on her hands and knees in the backyard several years ago and called police. "But they didn't take it seriously," she said.

Another neighbour, Israel Lugo, said he heard pounding on some of the doors of Castro's house, which had plastic bags on the windows, in November 2011. Lugo said officers knocked on the front door, but no one answered. "They walked to the side of the house and then left," he said.

Neighbours also said they would see Castro sometimes walking a little girl to a neighbourhood playground. And Cintron said she once saw a little girl looking out of the attic window of the house.

Four years ago, Cleveland police came under heavy criticism following the discovery of 11 bodies in the home and backyard of a man who was later sentenced to death. The home was in a poor part of town several miles away from where the missing women were rescued this week.

In the wake of public outrage over the killings, a panel formed by the mayor recommended an overhaul of the city's handling of missing person and sex crime investigations.

Just noticing these details from the CBC article. Gut wrenching that they were so close to being rescued on multiple occasions, probably way more than listed here as well.

With this, Jaycee Lee Dugard and other stories from around the world, you have to wonder just how many instances of these sorts of horror stories are taking place around where you live and no one has a clue.

If all of that is true there really needs to be an overhaul of police taking multiple suspicious reports of activity at a home more seriously.

Or there needs to be some kind of coordination between the census bureau, local/state offcials, and various law enforcement agencies.

"You've seen this girl peak out of the attic and with him several times, but never seen the girlfriend over the years? And you claim you saw this girl during 2008/2009, as well as in 2011/2012? There have been 2 separat ereports of female screams from the house over the last 5 years.... hmm... but he marked himself as the only resident of the house on the census in 2010... Furthermore, he is not listed as the guardian of any child in any school in the state, nor has he signed in as the guardian of anyone at any medical facility within the state in the last 10 years..."

I know we have various protections under the 4th amendment, but surely, sharing of information across local, state, and federal agencies (house ownership, school registrations, hospital/doctor sign ins) should allow officials to realize that "Okay, there are screams being heard, and this mysterious girl, whoever she is, doesn't seem to exist or be attached to this guy in any social records, services, or institutions, but she's been there for years according to the neighbors. That calls for a search warrant."

I'm not saying the government should know everything about you, but something as basic as seeing that the guy has never signed for any child or spouse at a doctor, school, on taxes or the census or anything, that should be accessible. And it should be a red flag when you receive numerous incidents where police are notified of screams at his residence over a period of several years.

Charles is about to get free McDonald's for life.

Those details about the close calls over the years are haunting. 10 years of horror. Likely a few times where one or more thought they could escape. No wonder Amanda was so hysterical and paranoid while calling 911.

Nice of them. He only mentioned them about every time he talked.
If he knew what he was doing, why stop at McDonald's??

Anyone else of the opinion that there should be some kind of precedent for these cases in which whoever knows should be given the same sentence as the perps?

Messed up about the neighbors calling about suspicious activity, just needed one cop just to follow through and check the place out.

Is it some sort of privacy rights thing not to respond to such things?

If it was on the books from day 1 and everyone knew about this law, sure.
But go ahead and explain to me how you could introduce this new law without throwing people who didn't know about it under the bus. Also, I'm sure at least some of these people are afraid of revenge. Although I get where you're coming from, and I would do what Charles did, but I'm not sure everyone has the courage or safety for it.

As in even if the bros did none of the raping they should get as much time as Ariel.
