Everywhere I watch I just keep seeing editorials about the subject, and honestly after spending 1 year in california in high school i've got to say that honestly i didn't see so many obese people, and most of kids in my school were really thin.

i know my experience is completely anecdotal but i was wondering if the issue a little bit blown out of proportions

You gotta look in the right places. California is a bad representation of America as a whole.

Eh, depends on how you look at it. 1 out of 8 Americans live in California.

Obesity rates are higher in rural areas or towns of smaller populations. If you compare somewhere in central california to somewhere closer to LA you're probably gonna see a differential there.

As a former member of ObeseUSA (now I'm just in OverweightUSA... still working on it!) I'm thinking you just live in a decently healthy part of the country. You shouldn't need to look too hard to see it though, just head on out to a Walmart or McDonalds.

I'm sad to say yes. I come from Southern California and San Francisco so, for the most part, people are in shape there. But now that I live in Maryland, almost everybody here is fat. Kinda sad.

Location location location. Some places have higher rates than others. The availability of tastey fatty foods makes a huge difference in the obesity rates.

It is in South Florida. I was at Costco a few hours ago and their was an enormous lady in a motorized cart. The cart was filled with giant logs of butter, and virtually nothing else.

Come to New York or Boston. I see so many morbidly obese people everyday, myself included :(

yup

i mean clothing brands are CRITICIZED for not catering to fat people and making XXXLs. and there are people even on gaf that support that

this country's fucked

Anecdotal, but when I went to the states I saw the fattest people I've ever seen in my life. I had never seen people so fat they needed to use scooters to move.

3X? damn that's really sad :(

isn't the government trying to fix the problem in any meaningful way?

Yeah, it's pretty ridiculous. The worst is how many more fat little kids there are running around. When I go to my kids' events and I see so many of their not-even-10 year old peers grossly overweight, it's enough to make you want to cry.

When I was a kid in the 80s, there would be like 1 fat kid in class, if that. Now they're all over the place.

I'm 39, and I had my "wake up call" just a hair under 2 years ago, and I've dropped about 70 pounds. But my knees will need to be replaced sooner rather than later, and I will have back issues thanks to carrying so much weight for so many years.

It's devastating, and I have no answers. It's like I'm watching the movie Wall E come to life before my eyes.

Fuck no. The companies that are poisoning our food supply with processed shit own our government.

You didn't see the pixar movie with the garbage robot? It was a partial documentary.

Something should be done with school cafeteria food. Get rid of dem sodas.

Living in the Northeast I am often inclined to think that Fat America is over represented in the internet/ media, but then I go to Florida every year and see enough morbidly obese people to make up for the rest of the year. So yes, there are lots of fat people, but you have to know where to look.

because the one thing everyone wants is a bunch of naked fat people walking around

Yes, but the way the government labels people as obese is not right. You can be 170lbs and have a body fat of over 20% as a male and not even look slightly obese. It makes no sense what so ever. It is how your body stores fat. Everyone is different. Is this country fat? Yes. But there needs to be a different way to label who and who isn't obese.

FWIW california is one of the lesser obese states

Honestly it all comes down to proper education regarding health and nutrition, simply put, many people are lacking that.

I'll give you an example: My parents when they cook, pay no real attention to calories or serving size... Albeit, what they are eating is relatively healthy, but my dad in particular, tends to over eat because of his qualms about wasting food. He is too resistant to simply modify how much food he cooks, so instead, when I eat over I only eat about half of what he serves to me because it's a pretty absurd amount of food.

yep. go to the store. 70% carbohydrates being sold there. The cheapest stuff. It's all filler, and we all fill up on it. Lot of people end up overweight on the common standard diet, and almost no one has good nutritional sense. Lots of people start off on the right foot, lots don't.

Eventually they're going to incorporate practical nutrition into health classes in school, so it'll be as comprehensive as quadratic equations. Go beyond the food pyramid and what little they tell you about cholesterols, and fucking esplain what a goddamn ester is. And make sure they understand, not just taking notes.

Whenever I get back to Europe after an extended stay in the US, I feel like everyone is super thin. Obesity is a massive problem in America unfortunately.

Yes. Due to our food. Just step into one of our groceries and you'll understand why. 90% is food engineered to drive up hunger.

I live in the south. It's depressing seeing people order double burgers with large fries and coke for lunch. They have to know it's really bad for them, so I don't know why they keep poisoning themselves with it. Shit is sad.
