is obesity in the USA really that predominant?

Hit up the Midwest and the South. Go to a Walmart in the South, I dare you.

Obesity is an epidemic. It isn't as noticible in certain places.

I think that there's a lot of factors to it more than just soda or overeating. My wife is a good example where her perscriptions have weight gain as a side effect. That combined with her asthma makes weight loss incredibly difficult. Of course people see that she's overweight and think "Stop eating so much lol." Fact is, she eats way less than I do.

There was a guy on NPR just yesterday talking about some of the pollutants in America could be leading people to keep weight on.

that's not to mention our messed up food subsidies/fast food culture/restaurants that try to kill you with food.

You know under eating is an issue, right?

They just don't over-indulge. Portions of cakes and other sweets were way smaller than what we get served here in Mexico. Donuts are smaller and oddly absent of oil once you get them (at least in Mr. Donut) - here in Mexico donuts are uber oily and make the wrapping go transparent in seconds, lol.

I want Mr. Donut

I work on a college campus and yes, it's the same thing. Most people seem to be in shape.

I guess there are so many people who live in rural/suburban areas that balloon up and stay inside.

I live in the UK and it's sad how many people - particularly guys over 30 - are overweight. I can only recall ever seeing one very overweight person on a scooter though.

yep. go to the store. 70% carbohydrates being sold there. The cheapest stuff. It's all filler, and we all fill up on it. Lot of people end up overweight on the common standard diet, and almost no one has good nutritional sense. Lots of people start off on the right foot, lots don't.

Eventually they're going to incorporate practical nutrition into health classes in school, so it'll be as comprehensive as quadratic equations. Go beyond the food pyramid and what little they tell you about cholesterols, and fucking esplain what a goddamn ester is. And make sure they understand, not just taking notes.

I think that people in "the past" didn't nessecarily have more nutritional sense then today though, its just that the kinds of food that you could kind of thoughtlessly purchase back then wasn't nearly as horrifically bad for you.

Yeah, but that's not it. It's not that I'm saying "she under eats" as much as I'm saying "And I overeat."

Have you worked out her BMR? And yours?

My maintenance caloric level is around 2,800, meaning I have to eat 2,800 calories daily to maintain my weight. My girlfriend's maintenance caloric level is around 1,600. She could eat significantly fewer calories than me (800 less per day, for example) but still gain weight because she'd be eating more than her maintenance.

While you say it's your wife's medication that's causing her to put on weight, it'd still be worth it to get her to track her calorie intake for a few weeks to find out exactly how many calories she's eating every day. It might end up being more than you think.

Louisiana is not a place to go if you want to stay thin. the food is out of this world over here. Despite this I am still very skinny. Actually underweight. but Im one of the lucky ones. The traditional cajun diet though isnt extremely fattening. It is, however, very high in sodium, so my heart is gonna keel over eventually.

I noticed Disney World has been brought up. So many motorized scooters.

Disney even took the initiative to educate about obesity with one of their attractions called Habit Heroes. It was promptly shut down after opening and retooled to be more sensitive.

Seems like a hollow gesture since the parks sell Turkey Legs that are over a thousand calories.

I'm really amazed by this pic. I'm italian and here at mcdonald's small is 250 ml, medium 400 ml, large 500 ml.

Jesus, those must be massive unless they are just slathered in sauce or something.

Americans are, pound for pound, more powerful than the rest of the world. Our large food portions are directly responsible for this. I think we just need a change of perspective.

The heavier you are, the more deadly your elbow drop. The heavier you are, the harder it is to kidnap you. You will live that much longer through a nuclear winter. You might even survive. And you'll look great.

I've packed on some pounds. I'm 6' and I weigh 195. I've started cutting out soda completely and I bought a jump rope. I'm trying to stop this weight gain in its infancy.

In my opinion, fast food and the lack of time is the huge problem here. People work themselves to death, get stressed, don't have the time to cook, and eat greasy, unhealthy food by the pound because of that stress.

The south...jebus.

The south's problems are very simple. I live in the south. Once women have children here it is over. They become fat and that is good enough. This is especially true in rural areas. People don't believe in exercise in the rural areas. This is sometimes even true in the urban areas, but there are plenty of obese people there too. It's diet, lack of exercise, and people being content with their appearance.

Ireally think it is the climate. the high heat and humidity makes people feel lazy. even energetic people. There is nothing particularly different about how southern people think compared to other parts of the country in terms of dietary habits and such. It is easier to live a healthier outdoor lifestyle when it isnt 90+ degrees outside with 100% humidity.

Most people in SoCal (especially around Newport/Laguna) are in pretty good shape. However, anytime I go to Disneyland I notice the fattest people ever...
