is obesity in the USA really that predominant?

iirc, Asians tend to eat smaller portions and are more active (using bicycles for example). Do Asians eat potatoes and a lot of sweets?
I remember seeing one very obese Japanese guy when I lived in Japan. It was so odd to see that.

I need to get more active this summer

The reality is some states have obesity rates lower (much lower in the case of Colorado) than other countries on the list whereas some have much higher obesity rates (like the south). The average is still way too high but it doesn't represent every state. I'm in the "fattest" west coast state apparently and it's still lower than New Zealand.

Everywhere I watch I just keep seeing editorials about the subject, and honestly after spending 1 year in california in high school i've got to say that honestly i didn't see so many obese people, and most of kids in my school were really thin.

i know my experience is completely anecdotal but i was wondering if the issue a little bit blown out of proportions

It really depends on the state.

where are you from ?
I'm back from 2 weeks in spain/france and I've seen 1 obese person. it was an american tourist lady in Barcelona.
In the US and Canada, I see huge dudes and gals every fuckin day.

car and fast food culture are huge in america, compared to Europe

It's not just that there are a lot of fat people, it's that the very fattest people are bigger than they ever have been. So, it kind of raises the bar in some areas of the country in what is considered fat.

In Ohio, if you are middle-aged and 'only' 30-40 lbs overweight, you aren't even considered fat. Just someone that is trying to lose weight.

When I goto places that have large congregations of poorer people (Wal-mart, Chipotle, Country Fairs, Free Concerts) I am just stunned at how fat everyone is. It was the main motivation for me to lose my +30 lbs that I put on.

In a sense it is a bit overblown since it doesn't take much to be considered obese using BMI as your measurement. You might know people that are technically obese but won't fit your mental image of what an obese person looks like. The other problem is that while it's true that obesity rates are increasing, the population is also aging. Usually people gain weight when they grow older.

people like what they like. some people go for bigger guys and girls. its just life.

I tend to think that if you removed from the equation an individual's own physical characteristics, their social aptitude, and their financial/social standing, and then you asked them what they'd prefer, you'd find a lot of people who "go for" larger bodied people would prefer the alternative.

Not really. some people have a fetish for large men and women. There was an episode about it i think on mtv my life series.

And to add that some larger people do carry themselves in such a way that makes them attractive to others. Just because someone if fat doesn't automatically make them unattractive. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Don't waste your time. I went for several pages in the last "OMG USA BE SO FAT!!!" thread and no one listened to me or read the links I supplied proving this.

It's true I think. Poor people in first world country are usually fatter than the rich guys because of bad eating habits and maybe a more difficult access to food of higher quality

This goes beyond weight also. In my experience, people tend to date to their attractiveness level, barring any deviations in social or financial standing. Dunno how we'd do a study to quantify it. Just sharing a thought.

Holy fucking shit @ that gif. I never realized it was that bad over there.

Poor income -> too much junk food =S?

The poor people in third world countries must all be overweight now.

The third world doesn't have super cheap garbage food(yet).

I disagree. Personality among other things can make someone more attractive than how their body looks.

Why do some people think income and status makes someone prone to being fat. There are many overweight CEOs and look at Chris Christie, Governor of New Jersey, he is overweight but he is still damn awesome.

"Normal weight" is no longer normal in the US. The overweight and obese are the majority.

yep. go to the store. 70% carbohydrates being sold there. The cheapest stuff. It's all filler, and we all fill up on it. Lot of people end up overweight on the common standard diet, and almost no one has good nutritional sense. Lots of people start off on the right foot, lots don't.

Eventually they're going to incorporate practical nutrition into health classes in school, so it'll be as comprehensive as quadratic equations. Go beyond the food pyramid and what little they tell you about cholesterols, and fucking esplain what a goddamn ester is. And make sure they understand, not just taking notes.
They're going to have to get people in the habit of buying and eating healthy food from an early age. Education only goes so far. If the junk food gets into your house then the battle is already lost.

For example, people know that apples are healthier than cupcakes but if you put out a bowl of apples and plate of cupcakes guess which ones get eaten first? Part of that's human nature. If people have a choice they're going to choose the tastier item.

I'd go for the apples but that's just me and i am obese.

Nope, it's mostly rice, milk and sugar.

I don't recall potatoes being that common, but people do eat plenty of sweets. OH GEESUS some train stations in Japan always smell like freshly baked sweets.

That's weird because traditionally asian diet is very low on sugar. That's why despite consuming a lot carbs (rice), the vast majority is quite thin. The sugar intake was mostly from fruit. But that's changing fast because of the increasing popularity of western food (cakes, fast food, etc).

yea it's mainly with the middle-aged folks and older though. they all got a belly. obese isn't necessarily honey boo boo size

They just don't over-indulge. Portions of cakes and other sweets were way smaller than what we get served here in Mexico. Donuts are smaller and oddly absent of oil once you get them (at least in Mr. Donut) - here in Mexico donuts are uber oily and make the wrapping go transparent in seconds, lol.

At some point, the population needs to exert some self-control. They sell 90% of the same stuff in Canadian supermarkets as they do in the USA and people here are nowhere near as fat.

I agree with the sentiment, but it's hard to exert self-control when there is so much misinformation out there, coming from even the government itself. A lot of people are killing themselves with things they think are healthy because it's been hammered into them by various "authorities."

Anecdotally, I went from 350+ t0 190 in a year from diet and exercise and my diet is between 55-60% carbohydrates every single day.

Sure, every body is a bit different but in general humans are more alike than not. Carbs aren't the villain. Inactivity, sugar, and unhealthy fats and carbs are the villains.
