Well, yesterday (monday), every Virgin Megastore in France made ultra huge discounts on everything except books.
Half price on games and consoles, even brand new. That's because every Virgin Megastore will close in the next months and they are nearly giving away the stocks by slashing prices.
One Virgin Megastore in France,
seconds after opening
So PS3 could be taken for like €125, Xbox 360 for €89, PSP for €50... The problem is there were very few of them (their last restock was like two months ago) and they were all gone minutes after opening. There were guys who took 3 or 4 PSP at half price just to resell them on the internet at full price. Some very luck people even got iPads for €200.
There were another problem: the retail prices they had on some games were kinda double the price we could find on websites like Amazon. The best example was 007 Legends which was €70, slashed down to €35. You can find it for €20 in some stores. And by the way, games in France are way more expensive than in England.
Anyway took Heavy Rain for €12.50 and PlayStation All-Stars for €20.
The problem in France is that retailers never do Black Friday-like sales. When they do sales on video games and high-tech equipment, it's always on very old equipment and games they can't manage to sell. Their sales are like FIFA 07 at €2, or very bad DS games. They never slash the prices on good and recent games, they stay at €60 or €70 for a long period of time, because they absolutely want to get money off their games they bought €49 per copy.
And after they get surprised not getting enough customers because everyone is buying on the internet for cheaper prices. GAME closed every store in France 4 months ago and did the exact same thing by slashing all the prices. Now it's Virgin's turn. And the future doesn't look bright for other specialized retailers threatened by the internet prices. Anyway I feel sad for the 700 people who work in these stores (they were around 1000 for GAME), and will have to suffer this because of the market turnover and bad decisions from the management.
