Vita PSN Game & Service Thread | May 2013 | Lovecraftian Wasteland

I'm about to uninstall Guacamelee. Was all fun and games until that damn Thule Tree. There's no way I'm coordinated enough to go up those platforms:

And believe me I tried. Can't remember the last time I wanted to snap my Vita in half. I wish there was a demo that had that level only. I could've saved myself the 15 bucks. Kudos to those that found that part easy.

On a related note, is the platforming in Dracula X or SOTN that frustrating? I was planning to pick that game up after playing Guacamelee. Not so sure now if the genre is still for me.

For that reason, I played the game on my PS3 from this point forward. Felt like I might end up smashing the Vita into my skull after my 99th time trying to get up the tree. Finally did it on PS3 but it wasn't any easier.
Edit: buy the SoundShapes DLC if we get it today.

Episode 1? Ehh..
iOS game? Ehh..
pass :(

Can we expect this to be like Back to the Future or Walking dead but in a more tiny, short version?

I'm curious to see more it, for some reason the Video is showing private for me from the PS Blog...

EDIT: I can see the video now.

ok so incoming persona 4 golden rant post!

holy god im in love with this game and its so weird. I enjoy the occasional jrpg but outside of the mainstream ones like FF7 and Parasite Eve never really played niche ones. This game is the antithesis to a style i would normally enjoy. Quirky japanese characters? jpop style soundtrack? maze like dungeon crawling? that would normally make me vomit... but im 28 hours in and its almost assuredly my favorite game of all time now... and im only in June! Currently working my way through Rise's dungeon, floor 4 i think.

In past JRPG's i didnt really give a shit what characters i brought along. i just picked randomly to make them all even. last night i literally spent like 10 minutes at dungeon entrance just starting at my party not able to pick. i love everyone so far. I think i have an unhealthy obsession with Chie... like i think shes the most awesome character ive ever played as. Her voice actor totally nailed the personality that goes with her look and style. Shes hilarious. Yosuke feels like my bro. I just cant imagine NOT bringing him along the whole way. Yukiko is great and is the healer of my group, i would probably be screwed if it wasnt for her media skill and other healing/buffing abilities. And Kanji is really funny. Wanted to bring him along too but i chose not too because im so attached to the rest already and he is level 25 while i wanted to level up my other party members who were lower (i think i just hit 23-24 for my 4 members)

I love the world design and attention to detail. Even though i cant do anything with my bedroom at the dojima residence, it really FEELS like a place i could totally live in and relate to. theres something about retreating back to my room after a long day. I love all the sub games like the gardening and how it gives you items and depends on the amount of time you dedicate to it. Inaba is a fun exploring and even though its small it has lots of character and i always see new people walking around or new dialogues to listen to. I think because ive never been or really seen a small town in Japan so it all feels very new and refreshing at the same time.

and the music... dont even get me started... SOOO good. I cant even pick a favorite track although the boss battle theme and "heartbeat, heartbreak" are probably the 2 top tier ones. is there any way to get the soundtrack digitally? i see i can import the OST but isnt that in japanese? i want the songs the way i hear them in the game. i know with the tv feature you can play all the songs but i dont really want my vita plugged into my car to listen to it... would LOVe to have the songs (LEGALLY) in my iphone or whatever

i will say i did get frustrated for a bit in kanjis dungeon as i hate grinding but had to do it to beat the boss. im feeling stronger in Rises dungeon so far, currently my party is between 24-25 so hoping im on target.

Also, how am i as far as hours played? is 28 hours normal for end of June? What do you think my target playtime is going to be? 80 hours? over 100 at this rate?

The Vita could die tomorrow and i would have justified my $350 purchase just on this one game. and i had never played a persona game before or any RPG from atlus.

ITS THAT GOOD

Ok I've put almost two weeks into the Vita so here are my quick thoughts on the system and games. Games played: Soul Sacrifice, Mortal Kombat

Games:
Soul Sacrifice is amazingly addictive. The challenge, the online functionality, the UI, the character upgrade system... I love it all.

I beat the MK singleplayer again on the PS Vita. Very faithful recreation of the console game with the only downside being the downgraded graphics on the character models. You don't really notice it until they do that transition in the story mode from the cutscene to the model. Pretty jarring. Other than that i had a blast with it and it was totally playable.

Portability:
Other married vitagaffers can probably attest to how easy it is to get in quick gaming sessions even when you are busy doing a lot of things around the house / with the significant other. So while I don't believe the system is very portable outside the house on a day-to-day basis (like an iPhone is) I do believe the portability within the home has a lot more value than people give it credit for. Also, the battery life is MUCH better than I anticipated. Really happy about that.

Controls:
I have probably 50-60 iOS games across my iPad and iPhone ranging from Angry Birds to GTA Vice City. I've been trying to become a portable gamer through these devices because, after all, they're the future amirite? And while the ones built specifically for touch controls can be a fun distraction, it doesn't really satiate the reason I've been playing games for 30+ years. Also, the novelty of having GTA:Vice City and Chrono Trigger on my phone is great, the bottom line is they simply aren't that fun to play... its amazing how even my favorite games of all time aren't really that fun when you strip away the tactile feedback.
After just two weeks of having decent controls I can't imagine going back to suffering through touch screen analogue sticks and buttons. Playing Soul Sacrifice on that portable was a pretty eye opening experience, as was Mortal Kombat.

UI
This is where the Vita needs a shitload of work. The UI on the thing is a mess. Between the bubbles and the cluttered mess you have to endure before you start a game everything seems so half-assed and sloppy as if you had 20 designers working on the OS in completely different buildings. The functionality is there, don't get me wrong, but its all very messy IMO.

Overall I wish it had a better future ahead because it is a damn good system and easily the best portable gaming machine I've ever played. And to think I haven't even played P4G yet. :)

Cutscenes are a lil fuzzy but I'll take 60fps over better textures every time.

I think it looks better than alot of other vita games I've played, def not ugly.

i totally understand the importance of framerate in a fighting game, trust me i do

but SFxT is only 30fps i think and that game is more than smooth enough for me... i LOVE SFxTK on the vita

would have given a few FPS for some better textures/polys on those characters models

only really noticeable during intros or transition from story cutscenes and xrays but still pretty bad

by comparison DOA Dimensions runs 60fps with way better characters models and stages and is on much weaker hardware

i understand they had a hard time optimizing UE3 on vita but still

that said, i own MK on the vita and its totally worth it, a worthy port of a great game (its my only way of playing MK9 actually)

Hey guys!

Can anyone tell me how is the port of Sonic Racing All Stars on the vita? Is the framerate stable and such?

Thanks in advance!

supposed to be really good.

there are just a few less visual fx and very little frame drops during cluttered tracks when it gets hectic

I actually beat the game in a week, that's how addicted I was to it. I actually just bought a Vita + Persona 4 Golden last week. Kind of depressed now that the game is over.

=/

On the plus side (lol see what I did there) - I got Playstation + for a year, so I'm going to be playing Gravity Rush next. Wish there were more Persona like games on Vita.

EDITED: For accuracy.

It is good, I guess. Not console perfect, but better than the 3DS version. Framerate-wise, there is some drops here and there, just like the PS3 version.

Also, online play is dead.

Jacob and the bigfoot first review thay I have seen

http://www.pushsquare.com/reviews/p...gfoot_mystery_episode_one_a_bump_in_the_night

They gave it an 8/10, apprently its only about 4 hours long but enjoyable, and inexpensive so might be worth checking out.

Anyone bothering with an OT? If not I may do one when I get home.

wow - im impressed. four hours is pretty good in my opinion for such a cheap game.

happy to hear it seemingly will do well. wesp if they have 2-4 more eps planned.

is this a PSMobile game or native Vita PSN game?

also wonder how they are handling episodic release... assuming there will be 1 icon for the game and it will just add chapters below it? not separate bubbles for each episode right?

Native PSN game..

and here is another review..

7/10

I will post my own review later.. but I like the game, great characters and artstyle. Voiceacting is good and the puzzles are really fun and brainy.

Total time was 55 hours. Also I was wrong, I beat it in 7 days, not 5 (just checked when I bought it).

I should say that: I. I didn't complete all the social links (but did complete a lot of them. Around 80%). II. I didn't properly fuse all of the personas that I could have (had some really bad ass ones in the end, but I was no where near the full potential that one could get out of the game) and III. I was playing on Normal mode (which was pretty easy).

That and, I just literally grinded for 8 hours a day, sometimes more. It's not something I ever do. In fact, most of the time I can't even play a game for more than 2 hours a day. But after playing Persona 3 last year and falling in love with it, it didn't take me very long to get hooked into this one.

How long should my save have been? 80 hours? I know with Persona 3 I had more time put into that. I just figured Persona 4 was shorter.

EDIT: Just found this site:

http://www.howlongtobeat.com/gamebreakdown.php?gameid=9336

Looks like my playthrough was quicker than usual, although some have said they beat it in 55 hours as well. I wasn't trying to speed run it. And in the end I felt really satisfied and really enjoyed every aspect of the story. So *shrugs*

SFxT is actually 60fps.

Cool, thanks for the info. UC is just one of the many, many series I haven't even looked into, so I don't know much about it other than "third person adventure/shooter starring Nolan North".

(...Yes, it's quite cozy under this rock thank you ✿⌣‿⌣)

The thing that sets the console Uncharted games apart is the scale, the unbelievable things you're seeing (and controlling), the story. You could take away the shooting and it'd still be an unbelievable game. I'd wager a lot would prefer it that way.

Been playing SFxT recently. Definitely 60fps.

Looks amazing on top of that, too. Curse Capcom for abandoning Vita!

I don't think that SFxT is amazing looking. It is pretty alright, but there is some tradeoffs, like poorer models, reduced resolution and the dreaded microstuttering (in the cart version, they say that the download version is even worst). UMVC3 is amazing looking with fewer tradeoffs, and not to mention, a better game as well.

I was comparing it to MK. ;)

Both Capcom fighters look great imo.

fewer tradeoffs?

completely static backgrounds that now feel lifeless is a pretty big tradeoff for me

stages are right up there with the character design themselves in terms of importance to me in a fighting game... it was noticeable

and i still believe SFxTK is the best fighting game on Vita (havent played DOA5 yet)

Isn't Blazblue best fightning game port ?
I don't have it yet but that one looks great and i haven't heard anything bad about it apart from some VA problems.

So, another Adventure Time game is coming out followed by a Regular Show game for every system except...
SERIOUSLY! How much effort could it be for 2 more skus

P.S. not port begging. Multiplatform begging is different.

It is exactly like the console versions. I'd say either UMvsC or SFxT is the next closest followed by DoA.

I think I'm going to pick up Coconut Dodge and Jacob Jones tomorrow, and of course Velocity will be free with PS+ if it launches (sounds like it might now). Will donate the full amount to Futurlab via their website.

I think you'd be OK bemoaning the lack of a Vita port in here (a little bit anyway), because we're mostly of the same mind. It's going into game specific threads that's the problem.

... meant to edit. >_<

ok so then this is the perfect place for me to complain about no RE Revelations on Vita?

still so mad about that

i know capcom hates vita but still... couldnt be that hard to port it and i would love it on Vita, great 3ds game made better by OLED and second joystick

Raid mode is amazing

As a Vita owner, I'm long since past any hope of Capcom support.

Of course, I also don't gravitate much towards their output (they were one of my favourites back in the SNES days) so it doesn't bother me that much.

I read the bold part a lot fellow GAFfers but I've never understood, why? I know I must I've miss something I just don't know why.

Good idea :) For anyone else that wants to donate after getting Velocity Ultra for free, the donate button can be found at http://www.futurlab.co.uk/ :)

I had no interest in Jacob Jones until i heard how cheap it is. May aswell give it a go.

i dont think they literally hate it.. i think its sluggish sales just scare them off so as reassurance us vita fanboys call it hate

whats crazy is that their two current games on vita were VERY well done for ports

so they understand the tech and i would be very confident in a solid port of RE

i dont even care about monster hunter either. Blah. we got enough clones and MH - alikes to not even care

I shelved my vita and SS for the new Monster Hunter 3U. It finally clicked with me.

It's so good! I have 100 hours in and can see me playing for at least another 100

I really don't care about backgrounds, because I don't have the time to pay attention to them when I'm playing. And since not all background elements are static, no harm was done. The stuttering in SFxTK and muddy characters are pretty noticeable and the first one is truly game-breaking.
