Nintendo Direct 5/17 4PM CEST, 7AM PST, focus on First Party Wii U Summer Titles

I don't really see them announcing any new games at this thing so I'm just hoping for more info on the summer Wii U firmware update and the summer VC releases.

I'm not excited about the summer titles at all, including W101 or Pikmin 3. It really sucks that we have to wait until the fall to get the meaty titles like Mario 3D and Mario Kart.

Yeah, my thoughts exactly. They have a decent, if small, library of good games - NSMBU, Monster Hunter HD, LEGO City, Nintendoland, the handful of good third-party titles like Zombi U or NFS - but nothing really compelling. If they can take that small library and build on it month-by-month until the holiday season then hit with a pair of key titles they have good chance of finishing the year off well and going into 2014 in a stronger position, even up against Microsoft and Sony's new machines.

If they fuck it up and don't start getting some momentum going into the holidays, they're done. It's that big, I think, just as the 3DS "relaunch" with its price drop and major title launches was.

I agree, they have to understand that they don't have the luxury of the 3DS price drop at their backs for the Wii U. They have to sell its merits on games, because tech won't work, the gamepad can charitably be described as a tough sell, and Ellen has no interest in talking the system up.

It wasn't just the price drop that helped the 3DS and it wasn't just Mario 3D and Mario Kart. Those two worked in tandem. Nintendo needs a half year of just nailing it with software releases to compensate for the lack of a price drop.

Especially if the new systems are not ridiculously more expensive.

It's got to be a case of "Hey, I've been interested in those games I've been seeing releasing and people talking about, but now there's MK/Mario/Zelda I'm going to go for it..."

Yep.

The system could, by the holidays, have

Scribblenauts DC
Mario 3D
Mario Kart
Zelda WWHD
Wii Fit
Wii Party
Pikmin 3
TW101
Game & Wario

which is a much healthier looking system than at present and much more than the 3DS had following the price-drop. The big question is if it will work.

Going into 2014, you then have Retro's game, X, Yarn Yoshi, SMT X FE, Smash, and maybe Wii Sports U + anything else they announce/have cooking. That'd be enough to keep most of the year busy @ 1 game per month.

Now that I think about it, I assume there will be talk about third party games as well or this will be a very short ND. Rayman and Splinter Cell are summer releases, right? Anything else?

EDIT:
Resident Evil: Revelations is next week

If we go by the previous half hour ND format I'm assuming it'll be like this (in NA):

DKCR3D footage
Animal crossing footage
Talk of other 3Ds eshop titles very likely Mario &Luigi Dream Bros.

"Let's talk about Wii U"
Very small teaser of summer Wii U update features

Brief reminder that Game and Wario will be out soon.

Details on Pikmin 3

The quick mention the begins the hype we didn't know...
Announcing launch date for W101 and Wii fit U?
Something boring on 3rd parties that we already know(RE:R, Deus Ex, and surprise reveal due to arrive in August).

"Eyebrows raise"
Future Virtual Console titles, a focus on friends from Capcom: Super Ghouls and Ghosts, all Street Fighter II's that hit SNES, Mega Man and Mega Man X mentions, other surprise SNES Capcom hits to hit eshop in summer.
"Hype Building"

Here Nintendo will surprise us with something it could be some sort of WiiU/3DS connectivity and VC cross play deal or an upcoming eShop game from Miyamoto or a key franchise making an unhyped return in late August.

The "Boom moment"
Even though they said summer titles, it will end with a trailer for Wind Waker.

End with teaser of some games to be mentioned in Pre E3 conference with one or two "surprises" with a date and time announced.

Third parties? Good luck.

We'll probably get something new to download off the eShop after this done, seeing as how Nintendo has had that fetish recently.

Deus Ex.. probably.

Fast&Furious and Sniper Elite v2 are next week as well.

The price issue could go either way right now. I suspect there are some pretty furious arguments for and against a price drop within Nintendo, and I wouldn't be surprised if they went either route.

What is a potential major challenge for them is the possibility of at least one competitor going the subscription-based route, with the initial cost of the system dropped but buyers tied to a contract for x number of months. Everyone knows you end up paying more for something in the end, but many still go for it anyway, and I suspect the lure of a $300 entry for Xbox Infinity/Durango/Hoppy-biscuit-whatsit could be pretty strong, even if the final cost is north of $500-600.

His dates implied they'd start next Friday, not this one/

His rumor was that it would happen at the latest May 30th. I do recall someone in the gaf thread mistakenly say 30-31st after the fact but that wasn't what was said in the IGN thread.

that guy was making things up. Don't read into what he was saying. lol

Some of it did come across as lies. Regardless it's more fun to see how right or wrong people are proven to be over time.

I just noticed the "first party" part of the Direct.

What else other than Pikmin 3 is releasing this summer that is considered first party?

I'm most interested in seeing WWHD but that's not a summer title.

The main summer title I'm interested in is Mario & Luigi: Dream Team but I feel I've seen enough of that already.

So these are announcements for their plans leading up to August? Can't say I expect to be overly thrilled about it especially with them already announcing a follow up to cover August and onward.

From a reaction perspective, I have noticed NDs tend to make GAF go indiscriminately crazy.

There are always floods of "Has Nintendo lost its touch?" and "Literally every one of these games is exactly the same" threads.

Nintendo speaks, people lose their minds. It is the way of things.

All I'm expecting is some fresh insights into Pikmin 3. Well, I also expect a few other titles like Game & Wario, but all I expect and value is new stuff on Pikmin 3. While I loved the previous Pikmin, I'm not all that hyped for the new one. Maybe they can rev my engine with some details on the campaign and some cool new creatures and settings.

If they were smart, they wouldn't give either Wii Fit or Wii Party its own month. They'd be ancillary titles to other games.

If they were smart.
If and only if they were smart. I don't think they would give them their own month, but who knows with Nintendo these days. I don't even think Game and Wario should get it's own month.

A ND to talk about Pikmin 3 and to tell us to "please understand" that Wonderful 101 is delayed until the fall?

yeah this'll be short.
