Nintendo Direct 5/17 4PM CEST, 7AM PST, focus on First Party Wii U Summer Titles

Can't wait for the countless super enthusiastic threats on GAF about how Nintendo is the best company ever tomorrow. That's always the best part of NDs.

Back to the blue ocean.

When was the last time they advertised a later Nintendo Direct before even showing the next one?

That's some decent evidence there won't be anything huge this time.

At this point, it's clear they have no intentions to release anything before the end of June. They think they're relaunching it, I think they're unintentionally aborting it, we'll see who's right.

It's part of why no July game is concerning. You have Wario in June (which isn't going to light the world on fire), Pikmin in August (which will do better than Wario but will be similarly incombustible), and nothing for July. First month of their relaunch and they're already failing to deliver on the game-a-month idea.

Now, optimistically, this means W101 is coming out then. But if it's not, then that means they consider Wario (June 30th) as both the June title and the July title which, really? Really?

I'm hoping that their relaunch looks something like:

June - Game & Wario
July - Wonderful 101
August - Pikmin 3
September - ???
October - 3D Mario (rumoured date, wasn't it?)
November - Mario Kart U

Wii Fit U and Wind Waker U have to fit in there somewhere as well, and while WWU is a relatively big deal, it could probably happily sit alongside one of the two Mario titles rather than having a month to itself. September for Wii Fit U?

Throw in the games that third parties have delayed or scheduled for the back end of the year and it's a reasonably strong lineup, but the pacing is vitally important now. Delays or stutters in the run-up to Christmas are bad news.

...or them attempting to defuse any "Where are the games for the rest of the year?" "underwhelmaton" "are they not even doing a Direct at E3 now?" chatter? They must have seen the idiotic response to their E3 plans, so...

From a reaction perspective, I have noticed NDs tend to make GAF go indiscriminately crazy.

There are always floods of "Has Nintendo lost its touch?" and "Literally every one of these games is exactly the same" threads.

Dark epic mature Retro game confirmed.

Probably TW101 - probably Teen (or the equivalent) in Japan.

I don't think that they ever have? Maybe the terrible 3rd party Direct that was Japan-only after the first Luigi Special in Feb?

I'd say nothing more than a tease, yes.

We'll get:
Wii Fit
Pikmin
Wii Party
Game & Wario
TW101
New Super Luigi
Pokemon Rumble U
Mario & Luigi RPG
Mario Golf
Wii U Summer Update info
GBA Games on VC if we're lucky

and we'll like it.

Summer games? Meh... At least we will know Pikmin 3 date for EU I guess. Do they consider September as summer or is it until August?

Hopefully W101 will get a summer release as well.

Not expecting much from this one. Oh well, not much more waiting to the big ND in June at least...

I wonder if we'll see any Nintendo developed Wii U eShop games. They haven't made any of those yet, have they?

Well I don't see how there could be anything too big since all these games should be coming out in the next few months.

The advertisement might just be so people don't assume this is the start of the E3 directs for some reason.

I JUST NEED A WONDERFUL 101 RELEASE DATE/DEMO TO BE HAPPY

This is what I expect, too. Zelda traditionally has no specific month where it always releases and I can see them doing a staggered release where it's August in Japan and September here.

CVG says 3D Mario for October. I can see it releasing at the tail end of October and then Mario Kart releases about two weeks later.

They have to know that the next six months are the entire ballgame. It's no longer about a headstart or being number one. If they want to be alive, they have to have a hard schedule from June until January of one thing a month that people might go "You know, I might buy a Wii U if there were more games like that." They need that mentality to culminate in November.

Indeed. I'm guessing they said that to temper expectations as to avoid frustration and disappointment from fans and the press. Though, I'm not quite sure what they'll cover. Lego Batman 2 and Game & Wario? lol

Best case scenario is we get a July Wonderful 101 release date. I can only hope...

I expect at least one website to write an article about how incompetent and unoriginal Nintendo is, how they have abandoned the Wii U, and how they left it to die tomorrow.

Yeah, my thoughts exactly. They have a decent, if small, library of good games - NSMBU, Monster Hunter HD, LEGO City, Nintendoland, the handful of good third-party titles like Zombi U or NFS - but nothing really compelling. If they can take that small library and build on it month-by-month until the holiday season then hit with a pair of key titles they have good chance of finishing the year off well and going into 2014 in a stronger position, even up against Microsoft and Sony's new machines. It's got to be a case of "Hey, I've been interested in those games I've been seeing releasing and people talking about, but now there's MK/Mario/Zelda I'm going to go for it..."

If they fuck it up and don't start getting some momentum going into the holidays, they're done. It's that big, I think, just as the 3DS "relaunch" with its price drop and major title launches was.

Yup. The good news is Nintendo *should* have the games to do that.

Also, at least in the West, Ubisoft is giving them some nice support from August to November.
