F the barrel.

I don't think I would have been able to beat Super Metroit back when it first came out; didn't make it past the first couple of screens at the Best Buy kiosks.

Didn't beat SMW/any of the DKCs until like my middle school days either.

Man I hated the carnival level because of that barrel. I used to just jump until it was high enough to go under. Often times I had to use a second controller because tails would always mess up the rhythm. I did not figure out you can press down until I read a thread on here.

I don't get it. Is she one of those "she's actually 1000 years old, so it's ok to lust after her even though she looks like a child" characters that anime creeps like so much?

I mean, this unfairly assumes that people in fact are attracted to the character because they are attracted to the character.

Netherrealm games just end up more casual oriented. (And casuals are a larger audience.) Nothing wrong with that, but there are definitely valid reasons Capcom games stick around longer in the competitive scene other than "Capcom Bias."

History. In any other situation, a game based on cartoon characters fighting video game characters would be considered a kid's game not meant for more than 5 minutes of attention.

Screw you guys. Imma go and play Arcana Heart 3 then watch Sailor Moon while listening to AKB48

My problem is if she is an awesome character in concept, and I'll take your word for it, why not give her a really cool design?

If anything you'd be better off with her not in the game and putting somebody in Skullgirls 2 who plays the same but doesn't suffer from the same art decisions (and yes I know there are big fans, but I still think a compromise in the style will serve everybody better)

What situation? I don't think this really has anything to do with it. Fun is fun and it doesn't have an age limit on it.

A big part of the reason why the character appeals to me is because of her design. A Mahou Shoujo version of Dante is simply fascinating to me as these two things that are polar opposites. So it will be interesting to see aesthetically how these things are able to synthesize once the character is in motion.

I know people don't feel the same as me, hence why Eliza and Beowulf are characters but that's fine. Those 2 characters are also pretty cool in their on right and I guess appeal to people who are repulsed by the game currently and that's a good thing. I personally didn't care for Panzerfaust on any level but people in this thread were excited for him.

A "compromised" Annie would suck for though.

You know what the funny thing is, people make fun of nerdy people for having the most insane shit, but they actually must be living comfortably and be making a decent living if they have all that stuff. When you see those rooms with wallscrolls, a plasma tv, computer, and shitloads of figures you can see how many thousands of dollars that all costs. I used to work in a comic book store and you can special order some statues through the store and this dude bought a Yoshimitsu statue that cost over $500 on top of the $100-200 in comics and trades every time he enters the store. Even though people make fun of those spending habits, fans like those are most likely more well off than most.

They're not making fun of them for their spending habits, they're making fun of them for the creepy stuff they buy.

The simplest answer is because Alex Ahad probably just thought/thinks it's a cool character design. And he's not going to change it or compromise, because this game is his baby. Case closed.

Yea I've seen my share of creepy stuff when I used to work at the store. I remember some dude asking for Cherry Pop Tart and I told him we don't sell that. Later I found out that Cherry Pop Tart is one of the first adult comics in the US. There were boxes of porn ripoffs of 90s heroes. They were really creative with their naming schemes too.

But a general rule is that I won't judge you for what you like, since many customers do like to stand around and talk and have had conversations that lasted 2 straight hours while working. But I do have a problem if you smell bad, so I tell them I need to get work done in the back of the shop so I don't have to deal with them.

that. or that they don't go out. so their whole budget is easily around rent, and their hobby.

What I mean is there is already an established status quo in playing Street Fighter (and Marvel) competitively, that's derived from hardcore players from prior games. Other franchises don't have a Yipes or an Alex Valle pioneering it. (Or if they do, it exists in other nations. Like KOF for Mexico, or Korea for Tekken)

In the case of Mortal Kombat (and Injustice), they've pretty much have had to start from scratch in the post 2009 FGC world. But it shows many new people the games brought.

Or they are normal people with hobbies and a disposable income sufficient enough to support it. Any of these I guess
I was referring to Japanese NEET Otaku who, supposedly according to something I read a while ago, fund their hobbies (statues, idol concerts, etc) by basically tricking their parents or on occasion daytrading. Could all just be bull, but the post reminded me of that.

Yeah I don't think anyone should be thinking Injustice sold well yet. We need numbers. If it did the analyst's estimate, that's not a good look, and I don't think they would've made much money off of it. Profitable, but marginally.

I'm having fun with it though, but it has so many annoyances that keep popping up, even beyond the actual combat and the game at large. I plan to write up impressions/a pseudo-review eventually, but I think the game has more rough edges than it appears to have on the surface. It plays a lot to my completionist tendencies though, so I can see myself playing it for a long time (for reference I finished arcade with every character in both MvC3 and UMvC3, and both SFIVs too I think). Gonna try out versus for the first time tomorrow as I've got a friend coming over, so I'll have a better idea about the meat of the game. Interactables and stage transitions are still super dumb.

That barrel introduced a new mechanic out of nowhere. It was pure bad game design. It was 4/5ths of the way into the game and there was no other place where you were required to do that nor any other place after that.

Fuck the barrel.

people who like anime aren't normal
Depends on the anime.

The competitive MK community has had people like Shock, Brady and Ryan "The Prophet" Hutnick over the years even before MK9/MKvsDC/SF4 as well as others who continue community efforts behind the scenes or were hired by NRS/Midway (not talking about the I:GAU testers and this was before Seth, Combo and Haunts went to Capcom). You may not know of them and they may not be as big in terms of popularity as a Yipes or Valle but MK definitely has community leaders for its competitive scene even before the SF4 boom. It's just that people only know Capcom community stuff because that's all they're exposed to and, in turn, all they seek out so the cycle continues unabated.
