Gameindustry.biz article on Wii U: Death by SunhiLegend (post 346)

"Nintendo can afford to have a failed console around its neck, but it can't afford to damage its most valuable assets, its IP."

I think that's the most important part to take out of this.

The Wii U is dead and gone. Nintendo just needs to not damage their IP's by making shitty games. Concentrate their efforts on the 3DS, but throw a bone to the Wii U a few times a year.

Spend the next few years designing the next handheld and console... or some sort of hybrid.

This article misses the point that Sonic games traditionally sell more on Nintendo platforms than EA sport titles do.

MCV puts it best:

EA’s range of sports titles – FIFA and Madden included – all sold well below 1m units worldwide on Wii. In reality, the news that Nintendo is publishing three exclusive Sonic games on Wii U is far more significant for the platform, because Sonic games have historically been decent sellers on Nintendo's consoles.

Yeah the media is in no way biased against Nintendo. Seriously, the Wii U is in trouble, but this "article" just shows how ignorant a lot of the press is when it comes to both Nintendo in particular and the industry in general.

The media is biased against Nintendo. Amazon is out to get them. EA are trying to sabotage them. Ubisoft wants the Wii U to fail etc etc It's a good thing Nintendo is innocent in all of this, otherwise I might have to assume they actually made a few tactical errors.

If only the article didn't spit truths then I would almost consider this a witty remark.

Alas, it doesn't hit any cord.
I'm out of witty posts for the day. I made a great secretly referential joke about Yukio Mishima's failed coup d'état in another Nintendo thread, and no one picked up on it.

Wow sounds like someone who was just really waiting to stick it to em with so much venom and pot shots its not even funny. Sonic a worthless mascot now, Nintendo dead and buried, no one cares about anything they announce at E3?

Wow.

Compare the worth of Sonic from 10-20 years ago to the worth of Sonic today...

... It doesn't, it's a tired old mascot who jumped the shark when Sega painted him black and gave him a gun.
That's an accurate observation.

There's also today's announcement that Sega is handing publishing duties of Sonic the Hedgehog over to Nintendo, like Sonic the Hedgehog still means something to the games player. It doesn't, it's a tired old mascot who jumped the shark when Sega painted him black and gave him a gun.

Oh wow.

Nintendo Directs sure bring journalist vitriol, eh? Maybe Polygon will make another article implying that NDs are kickstarters or Wired can say Bayonetta 2 is vaporware.

Basing an article on actual facts is somehow venomous?
Facts are not a soapbox to say stupid shit, Fox News-style of reporting is know for this. Unless you consider a franchise that sells million copies per game and has experience a resurgence in quality a dead series.

These are facts laced in so much hyperbole it would make a WSJ writer blush. It's written like a forum post regurgitating the same things discussed on a daily basis on forums the world over.

I an guarantee you there isn't one person who follows video games that didn't know the Wii U is getting the shit kicked out of it at retail. It's getting skull stomped and dragged through the mud while people piss on it's carcass. But just dressing up that same statement, and adding some colorful opinions about Sonic games (which actually still do pretty good numbers) and how worthless Nintendo games are and will be at e3 (despite the last Mario Kart selling more games than they sold systems the generation prior) you just can't really read that and think "Well there's a rational guy who is definitely not just spouting venom for the hits.".

First, them saying Nintendo pulled out of E3 is because they know they couldn't compete with Sony and Microsoft is just wow worthy.

Second I can't trust everything Game Industry says, they also said the Wii U was weaker than PS3/360 from "anonymous sources".

Nothing has disproven either of those points. Point 1 is incredibly logical.

They can't afford to have lukewarm receptions to their games like with Mario Sunshine and Wind Waker, not at all.

I was fine with it until this part >:[

The Wii U has been defeated by the most humbling of challengers - consumer apathy. When the inevitable "Nintendo halts Wii U production" stories hit, the majority of those that bought the original Wii won't even notice. The mainstream bought the Wii because it was a fun novelty, they didn't buy it for a new Zelda game.

Harsh but very true.

I can agree with the bolded part.
Move on.

That is exactly who they're tailoring this article to, rofl

No this wouldn't be venomous, but saying:
"There's also today's announcement that Sega is handing publishing duties of Sonic the Hedgehog over to Nintendo, like Sonic the Hedgehog still means something to the games player. It doesn't, it's a tired old mascot who jumped the shark when Sega painted him black and gave him a gun."
totally ignoring that the last 3 games featuring Sonic were million sellers (Sonic racing sold about 1 million copies in it's first 2 months, Sonic Generations sold 1.85 million copies and Mario & Sonic at the London Olympic Games sold 3.28 million copies) is venomous.

Dumb question are Gameindustry.biz related to MCV? Its just the rather tabloid tone ("jumped the shark") seems like what I'd expect from the latter.

Of course MCV would have retailers with lines like. ASDA cleaner, Richard Millon says "yeah. Its a white elephant, we've not stocked it for weeks. Nobody has asked where it went".

This writer should be fired. He had no right to out the WiiU's personal sales data like that.

He should have just said its not selling well and leave it at that. Anything else factually related to this is just the Wii U's personal information and shouldn't be outed.

Ubi wants them to fail? *adjusts tin hat* ah yes ubisoft wants Nintendo to fail.

the truth often hurts.

Nintendo only serve themselves never looking to the future while Sony and MS are tech and services companies always looking to the future. It was only a matter of time before that backwards way of thinking was going to bite them in the ass.

Nintendo got extremely lucky with the Wii because of its novelty and low price point. after we found out the price and specs of the WiiU it was pretty clear that that lightning bolt wasn't going to strike twice.

Nintendo did A TON of errors, both with the Wii U and other plattforms, and its fair to criticize them point that out, but there is a long way from there to the total ignorance and hatred behind this and a lot of other "editorials" about Nintendo. And today even Sega got to join in on the fun :)
