There's really not much point in nintendo making their own middleware for thirdparties. It might be nice for some smaller devs and indies, but they have unity for that (not really a fan of Unity myself but whatever). It would be completely useless in regards to cross platform games, and even for the odd third party exclusive they manage to get, most studios would rather work with their existing tech, or their preferred middleware. Porting an engine to another platform is much quicker than porting a game to a different engine.
Yeah, I was thinking for smaller developers or third party partnerships where they share resources between internal and external teams. The Retro engines could be internal, if the rumor is even true.
