Sony E3 press conference; June 10th 6PM PT/9PM ET

Somehow I don't think Knack or even Drive Club would get a stage demo.

I think DC will get a stage demo of some of the social features. I also expect Shadow Fall's MP to be shown at E3. I think Second Son will almost definitely be shown on stage.

Sony have a tendency to reveal media for smaller/known games in the days prior to and following their E3 conference - so it wouldn't surprise me if the focus in their press conference was bigger reveals/ brand new stuff.

1.5 - 2 hours.

Sales talk and giving themselves a pat on the back will take a good 20 minutes

PS3 section will take at least 40 minutes with on stage presence for games like The Last of Us, Gran Turismo, and Beyond, maybe third party games like GTAV as well.

PS4 section will take about an hour and will include unveiling the console, any other surprise on hardware, OS, PSN features, or software that we don't know. Maybe still hold on the price and definitely demos for the main games, Killzone 4, Destiny, maybe DriveClub and Infamous. A couple of 3rd party demos as well. Also announcing new games.

Vita is SOL and will get briefly mentioned in the 20 minutes opening talk.

They haven't done sales talk in a long time though.

Sales, hitting its stride, throwing some psn numbers, apologizing, whatever it is, their intro is always about 20 minutes IIRC.

Unless they show Vita and PS3 titles before the actual conference the conference itself will be 3 hours long or maybe even longer. They have a lot to show and a lot to cover.

People seem to be forgetting that we haven't actually seen extended gameplay for Knack, Killzone, Infamous, or Drive Club. So they'll likely be showing those titles. And they'll likely be making announcements and teasing new games. They also have to discuss things like their OS and online plans in more detail. And third party titles will be showcased. All of this is just for the PS4.

For the past 2-3 years Sony has been announcing games leading up to E3. I can't remember exactly what they announced, but I know they have. Actually someone should try to dig up what they have announced leading up to the past couple of E3s, that way we know what to expect in the next couple of weeks XD

For us old school cats... this is just awesome.

May not fit the theme but here are some other options.

Swingers

True Romance (OMFG the fun that could be had with this, a youtube vid of someone playing Bronson Pinchot role in the elevator or in the car would be awesome, or the Dennis Hopper and Christopher Walken scene, or the Samuel Jackson and Gary Oldman with DJ Quick scene or .... James Gandolfini and Patricia Arquette hotel scene) Hell True Romance could be an E3 Movie..

Thanks. I love True Romance, it's one of my favourites, definitely a movie for the super talented GIFmeisters here to consider.

Excellent work to both Angelus and Tusk! I love Heat.

A modern classic. In my top 5 films of all time.

Nah. Last year, within the first four minutes they were straight into Beyond: Two Souls.

IGN on Sony at E3 this year

In 2006, Sony started this generation out with a massive stumble. Full of bravado following the historic success of PlayStation 2 – a console that has gone on to outsell Xbox and GameCube combined three times over – Sony took its unprecedented success for granted. It quickly found out that a ridiculous price point alone could sink the PS3’s fortunes, and it nearly did. Only a steady stream of excellent exclusives and a timely series of price drops culminating with the release of PS3 Slim saved it from falling into a distant third place, and perhaps even into relative obscurity.

As a result, Sony’s position with PlayStation 3 has strengthened considerably since its calamitous start. It’s at relative sales parity with Xbox 360, having been on the market for a year less, and it’s going to finish very strongly with a trifecta of PlayStation 3 exclusives in 2013: The Last of Us, Beyond: Two Souls, and Gran Turismo 6. Such momentum is good news for Sony, and there’s no reason the positivity can’t work its way into E3. This is, after all, the most important E3 for Sony (and Microsoft) in over half a decade.

Then again, Sony has to worry about not stumbling over itself as it has in the past. Just when PlayStation 3 was hitting its stride, Sony insisted on introducing PlayStation Move, a peripheral no one in the PlayStation ecosystem’s inherently hardcore userbase asked for. With its PlayStation Vita struggling mightily to gain any sort of foothold in a market saturated with mobile devices, Sony split its focus and muddled its message by still talking about the antiquated PSP. Even when it has a solid showing at E3 last year, it disastrously interrupted its amazing press conference by talking about Wonderbook for a solid 20 minutes.

Games are Sony’s trump card. The PlayStation ecosystem, and PS3 in particular, has found its success with the hardcore through exclusives that simply can’t be played anywhere else. The tantalizing truth is that Sony owns a dozen studios that only make games for its platforms, and the company also has on its side the industry’s single biggest roster of second-party studios to boot. We don’t even know what eight of Sony’s 12 fully-owned studios are working on in terms of PS4. You can expect to see some of these yet-unknown projects for the first time in just a few weeks.

It’s hard to believe that Sony can beat Microsoft at its own game. There’s no doubt Microsoft is preparing a ubiquitous piece of hardware that’s designed to do everything. If this is the case, Microsoft’s renaissance man-like approach will leave Sony the opening it needs to talk about games, games, and games. It can abandon its gimmicks, like PlayStation Move, and deliver what its consumers want most. It may not spell outrageous, mainstream commercial success, but then again, the Wii U’s disastrous showing following the great success of the Wii is proof of how fickle a mainstream audience is. Sony can – and should – rely on the hardcore gamer, just like it did back in the ‘90s. The core won’t disappear.

E3 can be Sony’s way to continue all of the positive momentum it built back in February when it finally revealed PlayStation 4. It has a lot of goodwill on its side from gamers eager for their first taste of the next generation. The bad news for Sony is that the new Xbox will have been revealed by then as well, so it no longer controls all of the next-gen mindshare by default. But by focusing on gamers and games – and unique services like Gaikai and PlayStation Plus, too – Sony can steal the thunder back from Microsoft and run into the summer with everyone chattering about all of the exciting games they can’t wait to get into on PlayStation 4.

I am a bit confused as to the BC stuff. So there will be no backward compatibility, but some games will have an up-port from PS3 to PS4? Also, I think I saw somewhere that Sony was discussing buying PS, PS2, PS3 games from the PS(+) store on PS4. Is this the case?

Gaikai will allow you to stream PS1, PS2 and PS3 titles to your PS4. Eventually.

I'm curious after reading that article, specifically the Move. What would everyone's reactions be if Sony were to include a move & nav controller with every PS4? I've never used the Move, but I've always wanted to try it and including it in the box would be a good way to get it into everyone's hands. It doesn't mean we'd get tacked on gimmicky Move controls into every game, but it's just something to think about.

Why must the conference take place so late!! We want it NOW!

The Move's a good piece of kit. It just isn't very useful for most games. Hopefully it isn't a focus.

It'd be a met with a very negative response. I really don't see why they'd do it. Move/Nav aren't free for them, so someone is going to have to eat the price. They're going to be losing money initially on every console that they sell, so why add to that? The people that they're targeting initially, the core gamers, don't give a shit about motion controls. If they want to include it years down the line when they start targeting the casual audience, then that's fine. But if they're really targeting the core gamer then Move has no place in the box.

LOL, since when was this Microsoft's game? IGN can be so silly sometimes. Considering the history of consoles, if anything, this is Sony's game.

Supposedly it will be every game from Sony consoles. I think PSP and Vita are included. Not sure if PS4 is included.

That will insane. The netflix of gaming. However would that not invalidate any reason of owning a ps3/psv if you can play all those games on your ps4 unless handheld and console sections are kept in their respective places.

I really wouldn't expect Vita games to be streamable on PS4. That would be kind of dumb on Sony's part.

I'd just expect all Sony home consoles.

Hopefully Sony reads that.

No gimmicks, no bullshit, just games.

I agree. The trend in this day and age is generally to go after whatever you don't have, but as a consequence give little incentive to those who already support your product. Sony needs to appeal to those who already enjoy using their products. To be honest, it is not like you can't offer the multimedia services and all that on the side. Youtube, facebook and all that jazz are not big sales features these days, since they are so ubiquitous.

Not really, and if successful, you won't be able to play PSP/Vita stuff on your PS4 I don't think, it'll be a streaming service appropriate to the device you're playing on. Regardless though, the key word is how "successful" this can be. Streaming PS1/PSN games might not be so challenging, but PS2/PS3 over a network? The Gaikai team has it's work cut out for them.

But yeah, if any type of Netflix for games comes from this, it'll likely be very popular.

i think they mean being a tv set top box. they urge sony to keep ps4 as a games console.....

Again, it's not like Microsoft created X360 as STB/console hybrid so they have some kind of advantage/experience over Sony in that department.

Besides, we have no idea about Sony's multimedia plans for PS4. So, to say that Microsoft has some kind of advantage over Sony is silly.

Sony has Sony Pictures which has movies and television.

If anything, they should have an advantage over MS in that regard.

You won't be saying that when a bunch of cable companies come out on Tuesday and offer a $99 Nextbox with 'free' XBL Gold and a cable subscription.

Having said that, though I expect that to happen, that approach wouldn't work in Europe or at least in the UK, because we don't have a dozen cable companies - and everyone already has a subscription to one of the three TV companies.

Been watching too many Pach-Attacks have you?

Either way, that's not gonna work in Europe - but what the hell, the US of A is the home of the Xbox so who the frack cares about the rest of the world?

Where i live a lot of people don't care about TV, they've got their Netflix, torrents and DVD's/BD's and that's enough. If Microsoft wants to release a console that's heavily connected with your tv and somewhat forcing you to subscribe to cabel-tv... Well fuck that, that's not gonna fly in Scandinavia i can tell you that.

Microsoft hasn't even bothered to launch the subsidised 360 outside of the US, and that doesn't have anything to do with the cable companies, so I'm not expecting this to amount to much :p

Honestly this is true. The TV is becoming less and less important thanks to streaming services, dvds, BRs and pirating. Where I live people only really use Sky for Sky sports but rarely watch much else. Tv shows are usually watched on the laptop or tablet and a movie is usually played from a DVD or Blu Ray. The push for TV in a game box might be a tad late.

Been watching too many Pach-Attacks have you?

Apparently so have you. Just because Pachter mentioned it doesn't make it bullshit, if you think about it it's actually a viable path for MS to go down.

I said it wouldn't work in Europe. I live here too.

I was talking about the US, which is their biggest market. I mentioned the UK because the Xbox sells so well here.

It's just fun to speculate :p

Do we know how long the press conference from Sony and MS will last?

I hope Sonys is a bit longer since they'll also have the Vita and I think they'll show more for PS3 than MS for the 360.

Sony conferences are usually around 2 hours long at E3, so I can't imagine it'll be any shorter than that given they have the PS4 to show off.

Microsoft conferences are usually around 90-120 minutes long, so I'm expecting something around that length from both Tuesday and E3.

Sony's was 90 minutes last year. Yoshida said they'd been criticized in the past for conferences that were too long, so they wanted to keep things "very compact and impactful." Hopefully this year will be 2-2.5 hrs long.

I was going to make a GAF-Design type thread in which fellow GAFers posted their own diesngs/wishful thinking/concept for PS4/Xbox. So far the only other GAF member I've seen post anything was Cory's XBox brnading (which I personally thought was pretty good). I doubt either of us warrant a new thread (I think his stuff does IMO), so I'll just post this here I had posted some of my concept before, I spent a few hours today expanding the idea. I was working on how the actual packaging would work/look because I'm a sucker for good packaging but I didn't have time today.

If you do make that thread, I have some ideas.

I think DC will get a stage demo of some of the social features. I also expect Shadow Fall's MP to be shown at E3. I think Second Son will almost definitely be shown on stage.

Actually, if past history indicates anything, I wouldn't hold my breath for a multiplayer showing of Shadow Fall until August. Killzone 2's multiplayer wasnt shown to press until 2008 at the old Games Convention in Leipzig and likewise the same in 2010 for Killzone 3 in Cologne at gamescom (I know that much because I was there for the latter).

Im not really pro sony or pro microsoft in general, but it would be so awesome if Sony megatonned the shit out of MS this year at E3.

I'll let others squabble over what is/isn't a third party megaton. Just Sony's possible (unannounced) first/second party stuff should be amazing on its own.

RAD: Third person action/adventure.
GG: New IP
SSM: New IP
ND: The Order 1886?/new IP
MM: New IP
QD: New IP

Plus possible Sony Japan/London etc stuff at Gamescom and TGS. The fact that a number of the above have 2 games in development at a time should mean there is less gaps between games throughout the generation.
