Crow will be had in one day! MS will be dropping the bombs.

Ballmer is ready.

Flops come and go. Its the programming environment/tools/support that matters. Its the reason I'm excited about the PS4, not the 8GB GDDR5.

I'd be more excited if Sony had a group of Japanese wizzkids working on their Japanese hardware tbh. Much more excited. If the future of Sony relies on western devs...........

THANKS FOR CLEARING THINGS UP GUYS!

But I am having a quick google and I guess people got into this pointless flop fight back in 05 and it goes ether way depending on who wants to win that forum fight lol.

Seems dev tools, time spent on that platform and "strategic partnerships" like Microsoft and Epic count a heck of a lot more then a 10% difference in theoretical maximum performance.

Only if architectures are extremely different...

For example with MS partnering with Crytek we can probably guess the CryEngine and games using that engine are going to perform better on the 720 even if the ps4 is more powerful.

...and that's not the case this time. Because both consoles are based on x86 CPUs from AMD and GCN GPUs from AMD, games will perform better on the platform which is more powerful.

Software? Cause Japan is so far behind AMD/Nvidia/PowerVR on the whole graphical rendering front, it'd be pointless because they'd just end up using western designs anyway...like Sony dropping their Toshiba based "gpu" for Nvidia.

This is my late night wild baseless speculation...

What if they got the holy grail to work.. what if they figured out how to make cloud computing be useful for gaming? I started to think mostly about why they would have Dave Cutler working on Xbox, one of the smartest people at Microsoft (who can apparently pick and choose his projects at will) and an expert in OS, VMs and Cloud Computing. Some have speculated that he is working making the Durango VMs (needed to enable multitasking) as efficient as possible, but that doesnt seem like much of a challenge to a person of his expertise. His last project was working on Azure, Microsoft's cloud computing platform.. what if he brought that knowledge to gaming? Xbox Infinity.. infinite computing resources? Its somewhat hard to see how that is possible but im curious about what his role in the next xbox will end up being.

if they had japanese hardware, they'd be in a world of hurt. nobody can come close to competing with amd and nvidia on high end gpu's anymore. those companies have like, tens of thousands of engineering man years invested in the shit, hell thousands of man years just in the drivers. every driver and gpu they release is built on top of a gigantic mountain of previous work, you cant come close to matching that from scratch. even the patents they hold alone i'm guessing preclude any serious competition.

The Xbox 360 sure as heck didn't win the specs marketing war against the PS3, but none of that mattered in the end. In fact, it wasn't until actual games started showing up that looked undeniably impressive on the 360 that the whole myth that the PS3 was significantly more powerful -- which is precisely what a lot of people on forums believed -- was exposed as nonsense. Even many major gaming sites fell for it.

You can't really compare present with next gen. With PS4, Sony has lost the following disadvantages:

- exotic CPU that (by developer accounts) is difficult to work with

- underpowered, quickly cooked up GPU

- split memory pool

- shitty attitude toward developers (still remember the story of dropping a few thousand pages of user manuals written in Japanese and telling developers to translate it themselves - fucking idiotic)

I'm not saying that Durango's games will look bad if 1.2 TFLOPS rumors is true, but compared with 1.84 TFLOPS PS4, there will be differences, probably in a form of early resolution drops (from 1080p, if that is a target resolution), quality of AA, potential framerate dips (possible implementation of dynamic framebuffer could help here), etc.

So glad you felt it necessary to include my company's graphics tech there. Makes me feel like my work is significant.

1 day to go, eh? Exciting times.

I wonder why they moved it so close to E3. Have they said anything on what's going to be the focal points of this presentation vs. E3 presentation?

edit: so I should start reading op's more carefully. Games at E3, HW tomorrow I figure?

This will focus on hardware and features. E3 is for the games.

It seems tomorrow will be focused on the future vision of Xbox, the hardware, services etc. E3 will be all about the games.

They were originally going to show it in April, but moved it to May. Most likely due to hardware spec change.

I don't want to see them "failz." I want to see them at the top of their A game. I want to see the Microsoft from 2001-2007.

Xbox division from 2001-2007 was failing. Outsold by Playstation 2 in every country. Losing money every year. Red ring faulty consoles. Promoting HD DVD drives and Xbox Vision cams.

That's the problem, many people here have a warped sense of success. Xbox is succeeding now, it started really succeeding around 2009/2010.

Microsoft as a whole company was pretty much sucking 2004-2008. The Ray Ozzie/Vista/Robbie Bach/Zune years were a mess. The company has cleaned house and gotten really focused in the last few years.

If there is a company that has the money to blow its microsoft to do this.
But i imaging they would have multiple teams/prototype fighting shit out with different hardware specs. And gave devs the lowest specced hardware. And force them to work via an API so they don't loose progress when they decide to bump up to better hardware.
They can always allow code to the metal after release when cpu and gpu has been finalized.

Do people think they will talk about hardware much during this? Or go over the specs? I thought this was supposed to be a kind of "Spike TV" type reveal or whatever. I doubt they would go into any detail on the power of the system to the general public.
