I would've grabbed the sub'd console. :( this news really sucks.

$499 is too damn high. May as well get an X51 at that point.

Maybe they'll have two models?

1. Basic - smaller HDD, controller/console - $399
2. Premium - bigger HDD, 12 months Gold Live, headset, console/controller - $499

Both would feature Kinect.

If this happens that's me in front of my monitor:

That looks like weird al from the "I'm fat" music video.

Illumiroom will be a bigger innovation than what Kinect is. It's a step closer to Virtual Reality, and the only thing Microsoft needs next is Oculus Rift integration.

ok, if you say he is legit and not just a "overheard this" kinda type, he also broke the "not so draconian" rumor.
how about any news about that? its about 100x times more interesting than subsidize news

I dont know if he broke it but he did acknowledge it existed. He also said that an online connection was required to use Durango. Both of those look to be false now sooooo...

Though I wonder, wasnt there some speculation that a persistent connection was required because of the subsidized model? If they ditched the "online required", it makes sense that theyd ditch the subsidized model too. We'll never know for sure though.

He didn't mean it that way though. Almost immediately after he posted that article with that phrase, he responded "I don't know" to someone on twitter who asked him about if always-online meant that games couldn't be played offline.

If this Illumniroom rumor was from somebody else, I'd only be slightly excited, but if it's Thurrott then it's pretty much for sure coming then, especially a rumor so close to the event.

If illumiroom becomes a real product; which if it is part of tomorrow's event everyone assumes they are pretty close to figuring out how to make it work; they only thing that will delay me getting it is if it needs to be pared with a true flat screen TV mounted close to the wall. I have been rocking the 61" Samsung DLP since 2008 and wasn't planning on upgrading for this gen (that is, unless 4K gaming on consoles became a thing; which all signs point to not happening)

Paul actually replied to me on twitter and made a couple reasons why they may have dropped the sub'd console:

1) They're going with a lower entry point from the off.
or
2) They know PS4 is going to be expensive.

Might not all be doom and gloom but the no sub'd console seems like a missed opportunity to me. Especially if they are keeping Gold memberships as essentially required with the box.

If this IllumiRoom is sold separately it wont catch on but if bundled together and with the rumour that Kinect too comes with the system then MS will not be able to sell it at $400 and profit.

No way. That thing is pretty much a projector combined with Kinect. No way it is bundled.

You wont need illumiroom if you have oculus rift so I don't understand.

Remember the Fortaleza Glasses? I'm guessing they're indeed VR glasses that interact with th Illumnirom, and not full on goggles like the Rift. Just my guess.

What does this all mean for Kinect I wonder? I don't think they're going to have to pack-in devices for the console at launch. Would be interesting if they did.

They'll probably sell out without it for a while, could introduce it later when stock is plentiful.

I like the idea of Illumiroom, it's cool, but I would only buy it standalone and for less then $100 so I guess that has zero chance of happening.

I know rite. The subsidized console really looked like a good deal.

Hopefully this means the thing won't be $500. I'll bite at no more than $400 like last time.

My guess Illumiroom is really expensive as it requires a camera, processor, and a custom projector to see the room, perform the mapping correctly, and project it to a very wide view.

Mark my words illumiroom IS the next immersive step in gaming along with Kin 2.

That shit is going to be NUTS

They showed it on BBC this morning, and Kinect was hanging off the projector scanning the room. So unless you keep your old one handy, it doesn't look like you'll be able to have your super-double-immersion dreams come true.

Please sit down, I have some terrible news about your idea.

Thats part of the reason why Im kinda doubting what he says. Hes all over the place with his information. If MS comes out tomorrow and announces a subsidized model and doesnt even mention Illumiroon, I wouldnt be surprised at all :p

Im excited to see more of Illumiroom though. I dont think the next Xbox event is the place to do it though unless its going to be a major part of it. Did MS just say a few weeks ago that it wasnt ready to show until the summer?

Fake Edit: They did:
In fact, Microsoft Research's Hrvoje Benko and Brett Jones told us during a interview that while they have Illumiroom technology working well at this point, they're not likely to even demo it to the public until July at Siggraph.
Unless they were bluffing.

They are AR glasses.

IllumiRoom were the one thing that would convince me of buying the next Xbox day one - please be true!

And I were never going to get a subsidised console anyway.

non aspettarti quel numero

ma se mi aspetto quel numero e poi la console eccede le mie aspettative è comunque meglio ! ;)
scherzi a parte, hai info certe o solo supposizioni?

guys, excuse us, you know Italian gaffers can't help it when they meet on forums :P

That's a fair reason to be doubtful, but all I want to say is that Mr. Thurrott is pretty spot-on when it comes to his info. Product plans and strategies change, so there's a possibility that he was technically right both times he said it.

I wonder if Illumniroom will be in all Nextbox games, and I wonder how it'll work if it's not like standard.

Very interesting times ahead!

Thinking about nifty uses for Illumiroom, it would certainly add a serious sense of speed to racing games. Man I hope the Illumiroom rumour is true.

Don't be so sure; I am not sure what type of projector would be needed as it seems to only need to project "ambiance" type of fidelity; so maybe 480p or even less with a very wide-angle display.

That would explain why the tent is black, illumiroom the entire venue when they are playing demos on stage.

Hmmm, opens them up a bit to criticism assuming a standard illumiroom you might buy for your home wouldn't be what they would use as it couldn't handle such a big venue. They could simulate the idea nicely, but it would leave questions.

Paul Thurrott is very reliable, so I'm pretty much expecting it now.

Yup got the day off. Couldn't resist, was just looking at all the holiday days I have allocated :D

Where will GAF be watching the stream? I'll be watching it on the Xbox player, had a very good signal last time I saw it.

On my 360. The last E3 and VGA's were super stable and good quality, so I'm expecting the same tomorrow!
