So how did the "Mainstream" media react to the Xbox Unveil?

Not talking about the "hardcore" gaming audience that is represented by GAF and the rest of the gaming press but rather your local TV channels, radio, etc.

If their live subscription gives them (good) TV subscriptions, PS4 is dead till gamers have money again.

(MS ads could work then).

My favourite thing about that Kotaku article is that it's essentially complaining that not everybody reacted negatively.

EDIT: That being said, I think it just highlights how small a demographic the core gamer seems to be and how important the mainstream is to Microsoft and their marketing targets.

The Sun said:
Downloadable content for the new Call of Duty game, Ghosts, is available exclusively first on the Xbox, as is FIFA 14′s Ultimate Team feature.

Well, looks like their shady double speak fooled someone. But mainstream media has always done these fluff jobs at console reveals it's nothing new.

Well we do only represent so many people.

I want to believe they stopped paying much attention before the real humdingers started coming out post-show. What was at the show itself tends to play well to the mass market of the US and the love of TV, sports and all-in-one devices.

Reactions to the conference won't be negative, as not much of the negatives came out during the conference. The iffy points will trickle down and the mainstream press will report on the negatives in due course, particularly on the used game issue as Gamestop won't let that issue be imposed quietly.

Mainstream media that is losing viewers and readers by the day showing interest in a device that integrates every console sold with TV? I am not calling a conspiracy, but Media powerhouses have a lot of pull and Microsoft is doing everything they can to appease them.

I mean you can't walk into a Best Buy and buy a DVR to record your own TV shows, and yet all of sudden a gaming console is going to be able to do that? There are some backroom dealings going down we haven't got the details of yet.

Fantastical

Death Prophet

But the news that really got gamers salivating was the exclusive gaming deals they announced.

CALL of Duty: Ghosts takes the critically-acclaimed franchise into the next generation. Downloadable content for the new Call of Duty game, Ghosts, is available exclusively first on the Xbox, as is FIFA 14′s Ultimate Team feature.

YES! EXCLUSIVE DLC!!!!111

That's just dishonest.

MS are artists when it comes to catering to the mainstream media.

If people said the WiiU had brand problems .... Xbox One will have twice as problems.

If Microsoft can pass this than the blue ocean will probably love the non gaming game console.
But ... they could also say "I already have a tv with netflix, why do I need this ?"

Mainstream media aren't too fussed. The big issue with the PS4 unveiling was the lack of a box. They got their box here and some other shit

Because they need each other. Mainstream media is shrinking and the Xbox One offers them a chance to revitalize their ratings. Notice in the conference they mentioned things like live viewing the Super Bowl and Presidential debates. Mainstream media is hoping that the Xbox One boosts their live viewership by making TV more interactive. This console is not for us, it is custom built for publishers and media corporations.

Ha! I think it was just a bit of a shock to me, and it made me question whether I just isolate myself in this weird arse echo chamber.

Media ate it up. That 10-15 minutes with xbox snap was christmas for them.

The internet and forums are ones flipping out.

Of course they did. After all, more of the reveal focused on TV than, oh, I don't know, games. Why wouldn't the media lap up a device that focuses so heavily on getting people to watch live media?

I guess we surround ourselves with people of similar interests so it's more likely you'll hear from the core angry people rather than the mainstream.

That being said I agree that I haven't really seen much positive but I've only been looking at FB, Twitter and GAF.

Mainstream media is going to make people buy this in droves. The (new) Kinect functionality is the "gimmick" this generation that may pull in people who don't give a damn about games.

Mark my words. Price is now the only question here that may untip the balance.

On my Twitter feed I'm seeing stories about how Xbox has fulfilled Steve Job's dream.

I have to say I live amongst you guys and I don't understand you. Not for lack of trying.

I saw the way people here and over at Kotaku reacted to Kinect in 2009/2010 and it was the most bizarre thing. I honestly thought it was like some kind of joke that you weren't insanely impressed by Kinect. It took me months to realize that people here actually didn't like Kinect. Still seems like one of the coolest pieces of technology to ever happen in my life.

Today I saw a dude choosing channels just by saying the name of the network. As a guy with over 2,000 TV channels on his Verizon FiOS box (not an exaggeration) who finds himself lost constantly that is extremely needed here. I saw "dual wielding" content and instant app switching that solves my two biggest problems with the Xbox 360 (it's slow and does only 1 thing at a time). I saw a Kinect sensor that understands open and closed hands and reads your heart rate just by looking at you. Great for managing the UI and great for the fitness games I need to play.

I saw that Xbox is still going to be the platform for Call of Duty/shooters and Forza/racing even more so now that the triggers have force feedback. And I heard that 15 exclusive games are coming from MS. It was an impressive demo.

We're the 20% that buys more than two games a year, support downloadable & indie titles, buy dlc, and buy consoles at launch.

thinking about this, why is the mainstream so important if they aren't buying games as the core gamer, especially it they are selling the console at a loss, at least every wii was making a profit to nintendo

That's life in general, man. You tend to surround yourself with people you share interests and opinions with. You tend to shed people you don't share much connection with. Eventually, it becomes somewhat of an echo chamber, whether it's on the internet, or in real life.
