So how did the "Mainstream" media react to the Xbox Unveil?

Just because the mainstream media are impressed and will give good impressions to their readers, it doesn't mean the Xbox One will sell well. It will be expensive, and I doubt many mainstream people would want to buy it at 400+.

The Early Adopters will be mainly the people who want games, Microsoft better have a good E3 showing if they want the early adopters to even consider them but most of the early adopters won't be sold on the TV stuff, even less so overseas since it's mainly US features right now.

Yea, doesn't shock me that the mainstream press has a positive viewpoint on the Xbox One right now, the whole conference thing was for them. All the really shit news came after the presser. Just like they will not know about the DRM, the always online the used game fees until it hits them smack dab in the face and then the sparks will fly.

Yeah, I have a feeling this is going to sell like hotcakes and gaming will be worse off for it. This is the first time in my life that I find myself wishing for a certain product to fail. Good job microsoft, you really do bring new experiences to people.

"Microsoft scored an instant win over rival Sony by actually having a working console to show off."

Instant win? Sony didn't show their console out in the open, but they showed a hell of a lot more of what PS4 can do (including real-time gameplay demos), not only that but the features were actually interesting & useful for EVERYONE around the world and not a part of one continent.

Reading the OT title i thought it said "how did misterxmedia react to the unveil". Curious really what he had to say about dual apus, ray tracing chips and the likes...

Most of them seem to read like press releases.

This BBC article quoting "industry experts" (including Molyneux) is interesting.

The opportunity is there, as long as Microsoft is ready to confidently look beyond the hardcore gamers Sony seems stuck on, tossing them enough bones to keep them munching away happily at whatever comes next in the world of Halo, while boldly calling to residents of the living room who wouldn't ever think of themselves as owners of a "game" console.

I ain't shocked that Murdoch outlets are going cray-cray over it considering they probably have a deal inked for Sky and other Murdoch empire ventures on the One. Sky is pretty popular on 360 in the UK and a lot of people use it as an alternate Sky box, including myself so I wouldn't be shocked if this is the case and editorial line is to keep it "positive".

Yeah all those who mentioned it on my Facebook seemed it be impressed, granted most of them were Xbox fanboys. It was annoying enough not being able to play against some of my friends on some of the great ps3 exclusives because they only had an Xbox. I'll be pissed if the same thing happens this gen. If it does, this just further demonstrates the power of branding and establishing a fanbase early.

my local station had a bit on it last night, talking about how they could skype while playing a game together, made me cringe....

I found this ironic, considering how most of the games press writes similarly upbeat and ignorant PR bullshit about most regular game news.

At the end of the day, I think the press is just covering it. I don't think they showed enough in the console to actually grab that audience they're looking for.

Water is not wet!

"For years -- and I mean years -- consumer electronics and computer companies have been struggling to replace the panoply of boxes hanging off American televisions. Game consoles, DVD players, cable boxes, DVRs -- it's a mess. So it was no surprise that Microsoft announced today a new Xbox it hopes will become the all-in-one device in your living room."

i dont get this. If its something thats been attempted for years -- and i mean years -- why would the Xbox 1 come as no surprise? If people have been attempting to make an engine that runs on water for years and Ford announces a new engine that runs on water tomorrow, i would be surprised.

But isn't the problem, that the gamebros only buy 2-3 games a year. EA and a lot of other publishers developed games for the bros and were disappointed all the time.

On the other hand, gamers buy up to 10 games or more per year, so if you target them you can sell a lot of games. (ex. Dark Soul, Journey, Walking Dead)

I'm the only real 'gamer' in my circle of friends. They all pretty much have come to me over the years with any questions they have. They all own consoles, but mostly play sports games and the one-off AAA shooter.

I haven't fielded a whole lot of questions about the PS4. in contrast, I got a bunch of text messages from them regarding the Xbone basically telling me how awesome it looked.

the core gamer has always been a small niche part of the market...ALWAYS

the 360's continued growth 7 years into the cycle isn't only due to games its due large in part to all the various entertainment options available on the system.

As a gamer tuesday's reveal was a disappointment but the more interviews and press round table discussions I watch the more I "get" MS strategy.

Tuesday's announcement allows MS to use E3's press conference to focus squarely on games.
Initially I'm butthurt but I have a feeling at E3 they'll completely redeem themselves to gamers.
