MS: Xbox One 40x More Powerful Than 360 with the Cloud, Only 10x Without the Cloud

I want to know how they came up with 40x. Why not 50? 70? 200?

Every time MS replaces or adds a server your Xbox One will provide you with better graphics, better physics simulations, larger crowds, better AI. It's pointless to do comparisons between multiplatform games running on the PS4 and X1, since the latter will run more smoothly each time you do a test.

You "Clouders" keep saying this like rendering less than a full game makes it easier. It doesn't. It makes it a hell of a lot harder. Rendering the game on a server and sending you VIDEO of the game is a lot easier than sending you 75% of your code and then merging it with the 25% of the code processed locally to generate a game in real time.

Honest questions here, how do MMOs do it? Is it all basically client side calculations?

You don't know the power of the cloud!

You: Would you mind explaining the true power of the cloud and how it can benefit graphics/physics in games? Thanks.

Microsoft: Would you look at this beautiful controller, It's really something and has been designed by gamers for gamers.

You: ........

Microsoft: Well it has been a pleasure speaking with you, please look forward to Xbone.

8 years and only a 10x jump...

uhhh can we just skip this generation?

The jump between generations usually is 8-10 times in 'real world' performence, its just that this gen has gone on for 3 years longer than usual. Its still a great jump though when you look at the kind of graphics you can still get out of these 8yo systems, imagine what we will be seeing on next gen systems 2 or 3 years from now!.

Spin baby, spin those weak specs

The specs were by design. The realization is that the functionality that Kinect and MS cloud tech provides are more awe-inspiring to the average consumer than 60 frames per second.

Can the average person tell the difference between 60fps and 30fps? No. Can the average person tell the difference between Kinect and Move capabilities? Yes.

Let Sony build a more expensive box. HOPE and PRAY that Sony builds a more expensive box again like they did with PS3 and Vita and PSP. You want to be able to undercut Sony and keep them bleeding money once again. There is no way to lose to Sony in the long term because this server technology rolls out to every Windows & Xbox powered gaming device including Xbox 360, Windows PCs, Xbox One, Phones, embedded TVs, embedded cable boxes, etc.

Eventually the concept of console generations are over as long as MS keeps the Xbox controller consistent across generations, PCs, and devices. Gaikai vs. the company that built Azure and deep neural networks? Good luck Sony.

Hold onto your 360, because before the end of this decade this technology rolls backwards. If they're feeling goofy enough maybe it even rolls backwards to the OG Xbox. Sony could do the same with PS2/Gaikai but they forgot to build Internet connectivity and HDD into those 140M consoles.

Lately I've been thinking about it, and while having actions performed near instantaneously after a button is pressed has been a lot of fun, why can't there be a small gap in there where I could eat a chip, or take a swig of my Dew?

I hope Bayo 2 is turn based. Then I could relax while playing it one handed.

The right cloud use are Graphics AND player inputs over the Xbox and anything else goes to the servers, as MMOs and Dedicated Multiplayer Servers.

Seriously guys, this shit is just shocking. If ever there was a revelation of how incompetent this industry is at the moment, this is it.

Here is a fucking company who actively has announced things that WILL negatively impact every single consumer on the market... and then, in an attempt to muddy the waters, released literally like five or six different versions of the story to try to pretend it wasn't a problem. Oh hey, WE CAN CONFIRM that no used games is false! Wait, I mean *you* won't pay a fee! See, no fee! Don't look behind the curtain, because we're about to tell you that your friends WILL have to pay! Now hold on, what we mean is you just can't lend games without your friend payin' a fee, you can still resell games! Wait a second, we're just discussing POTENTIAL SCENARIOS. Oh wait, think of it like it's a new game... NO FUCKERS, IT'S NOT A GODDAMN NEW GAME. YOU FUCKING DIRTY NO-GOOD ASSHOLES. Goddamn, Microsoft is the worst company ever. Where were the journalists with a list of all the stories being told about this subject, showing them to the latest bullshit artist representing the Xbox One and demanding some honest straight forward answers?

Ok, so what's next? Oh yeah, hey everyone...if you use CLOUD, the Xbox One will get a billion times stronger! A trillion! A zillion! "But wait," anyone with a shred of fucking intelligence responds, "what happens if the internet goes down? What happens if you don't have as faster of a connection? How would such shit get around the endless cloud service bottlenecks? How will it do any fucking thing you assholes say? Can a fucking game journalist do their job?" Find out at eleven o'clock!

No, you won't be able to rent games! Fuck that shit, what a privilege all you potential thieves out there have had for this long! How dare you have such a right, like trying these gargantuan bloated MODERN AAA pieces of garbage out so you don't waste $60 fucking bucks playing the latest 4 hour hallway corridor generation X-Z nonsense title produced almost entirely by eight thousand board rooms across the planet. But hey, it has multiplayer guys! The same fucking multiplayer you've played in Call of Duty twenty eight thousand times, but it's there! VALUE ADDED!

No, you won't be able to fucking use your games beyond 24 hours if you don't have an internet connection, because we believe your lardy, undeveloped asses are so goddamn lazy that you're willing to actively give up ownership privileges just so you can fucking swap games around a little easier! Of course, that's all bullshit, because this is all an elaborate scheme to fuck piracy up some more, even though every fucked up DRM scheme that has been tried this past generation has reamed honest, hard-working and hard-payin' consumers so far up the ass that they have gaping holes larger than what's at the center of the fucking Milky Way Galaxy.

Now there are obviously exceptions. Some game journalists are raging. But this shit is ridiculous. EVERY major website right now should be eviscerating Microsoft. IGN should be fucking vomiting at these decisions every five second around the clock until the system launches. They should be disemboweling these pathetic PR representatives of these hateful corporations, spitting their sludge all over the faces of everyone who ever purchased games from them, denying them even a second to mislead legions of consumers into thinking the system is anything except what it is: the world's biggest fucking cock being whipped out and slapped across your goddamn face!

Oh, what about this shit? Why is your focus during your GAME CONSOLE reveal fuckin' TV? Why have you chosen your philosophy? WHY should gamers take this shit lying down? WHAT BENEFIT DOES IT HAVE TO YOUR CUSTOMERS!? For the love of Christ, someone ask some hard goddamn questions! You are all informed to the tit, please use your knowledge to slash these assholes throats so that all the bullshit will spill out and we'll stop having to swim through torrents of anti-consumer diarrhea!

LOL I don't even care what these guys do at E3 at this point.

Technically what they are saying could be 100% true. You can probably send a problem to be solved on their servers and the servers may well have 4x to 400x the computational power of the XBone, but that means nothing when it comes to crunching numbers and processing in a real time gaming environment.

Did they hire Sony's former people or something? Too many slimy similarities between old school PS2 and PS3 marketing tactics going on here.

0% chance I'm getting XBoned and I was 100% in MS corner back when they were launching the 360 because I hated this same kind of bullshit marketing lies and misdirection when it was coming from Sony.

All of this has left me asking the question, when can I preorder my PS4?

That makes perfect sense in a persistent world. A bridge that was being blown to bits and had super accurate physics.

You could have all the calculations done on a super server and then sent to all the players. Physics data can crush even the best GPU. But it's doing mental gymnastics to say it takes it from 10X better to 40X better. Because the game graphics are not altered one bit. So it's really playing loose with things. Who cares if the physics weren't real world accurate. To the game player, if they're never told, it makes zero difference at all. They don't even know that it's now super accurate vs faked. It looks the same.

To basically expand on it and echo what's been said, it's marketing PR fluff.

It's like the gif which says "it's fucking nothing" but not quite. And this feature being boasted is even funnier seeing how Sony will leverage it's own large network of servers via PSN and Gaikai to just enhance games. Not make up some terms like 40x more power which really make you look like a fool once it's digested.

The sad part is some will actually buy the drivel.

99.9% of the processing power needed for any given MMO frame is done locally. the only things calculated by the server are the enemy spawns and AI, and you're never seeing more than a few of them at once.

Also, MMO combat sucks because they have to account for latency.

they are adding 300k servers to an already huge network globally positioned for low latency and you not need high bandwidth for it to work. It is not rendering the whole game like onlive just smaller percentages of the whole game

Of course you do. Doest matter what their cloud does if you can't receive it lighting fast. To clarify I do think it will work on the online realm, but not in single player local rendering, at least efficiently for several years to come.

I'm just a little annoyed at how many people are taking what amounts to the biggest attack on consumer rights since this industry has begun lying down. And even more annoyed that so, so many major game websites are just regurgitating PR releases peppered with effusive nonsense about the Xbox One in order to convince people that there ain't nobody behind the fucking curtain. It's embarrassing.

I can't wait for them to fake this cloud shit at E3.

"Here is Forza 5 played locally." <sparse crowds>

"Here is Forza 5 powered by the cloud." <tons of people in the stand>

Eventhough the Xbone could have already rendered the crowd locally they are going to start making features "cloud exclusive" to both trick people into staying always online and believe their infinite cloud myth.

There are millions of whiny 5-year olds on Earth, and I AM THEIR KING.
and why would they want to pay for that?

It is another way to differentiate your game from the competition. Also, cheap, and scalable. The on demand availability offers great benefits.

Microsoft Azure doesn't have a great record of up time for a cloud service does it? I mean one time the whole Azure storage platform went down because they forgot to renew a security certificate: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2013/02/22/azure_problem_that_should_never_happen_ever/. Doesn't exactly fill me with confidence about the robustness of their cloud platform.

The whole platform didn't go down, and they explained the certificate SNAFU; it affected only https. Right now AWS and Heroku are way less reliable than Azure.

... Developers will take advantage of the cloud, but the benefits will not be easily quantifiable. Do not expect to see a game running at 60fps instead of 30fps thanks to the cloud, however, an RPG in which NPCs are smart even when you are not interacting with them, or bigger worlds in an MMO are very real possibilities.
Interesting. I wonder how this could be used to better model NPC behaviors and schedules in a game like Skyrim.

Gotta admit, with more details, even if pie in the sky, the idea is intriguing. I have not one iota of wisdom as to how practical any of this may be, so its interesting to watch the back and forth here.

Yep exactly plus if there was any truth to this then surely the console would HAVE to be always online wouldn't it?, Microsoft have already confirmed that you don't need to be always online to play games so it must be bullshit.

I will quote my post from another thread.

So if this makes it four times as powerful, it'd have no problem taking a game from 30fps to 60fps. Which by your own admission it won't do. So that claim is FUD pure and simple.

I'm grasping what it's going to be used for, but until the propaganda machine stops talking non-sense about just how great the impact is, I'm going to ridicule the messengers.

it has been speculated for a while that one of the move engines is assigned to let XO talk directly to the cloud, bypassing L2 cache. As much as I have heard, they are aiming for 4/32 frame latency, which is awesome.

PS4 has no such move engine, plus inherited latency of GDD5 compared to DD3 will make this impossible, thus giving XO big advantage once Azure cloud computing platform (300,000 servers) has been connected.

Really?

So, would this not need to be a RDMA transfer? A transfer over consumer grade routed networks?

My guess is, listening to Dan Greenwalt on Tuesday, that we will hear all about the benefits when forza 5 is released as they are using it already

here are other ideas for use (REPOST)

some thoughts on B3D how it wil work and a discussion here

Can someone who actually knows how games are made explain to me why its so hard to have these things on a local machine?

Sorry im not buying it. A.I is still your basic computer logic. It does not require as much processing power as you think. The reasons why we haven seen improvements in A.I are threefold

1) Any Improvement in A.I requires improvement in the player. Smarter A.I Means Smarter games which raises barriers of entry.

2) Difficulty does not increase sales. Even the most basic A.I is not a selling point in the game, long as the game isn't broken, most people don't give a shit about the A.I, long as there is some illusion of challenge.

3) Good A.I doesn't need computiontal power, it needs smart coding

Latent AI breaks anything that is action based. If that enemy isn't exactly where he needs to be in a given frame, the game is broken. There's a reason MMOs have shit combat.

Physics of anything interacting with the character needs to be represented accurately on screen and on time.

Weather? What weather? Rendering of the weather? Telling me what the weather is like? If it's rendering the graphical effects, it needs to be done in time for the next frame or the visuals won't match. if it's telling me what the weather is, "Sunny, cloudy, raining or snowy" doesn't require much calculation.

And a bunch of shit that has nothing to do with gameplay. super.

Exactly.
