SHOCKING NEWS: Xbox One Voice Commands During Demo Weren't Real Time

Its not about convenience or ease of use. Its about being trendy and hip. Its about showing off to your friends. Its about doing the same cool moves and gestures like those big stars in the big futuristic movies.

Not for nothing but people love when I use Kinect. Maybe not as much lately but back when I first got it that shit dropped jaws at our house parties.

Didn't see this posted anywhere, did a search for 'real time' as well, nothing turned up. If old, please lock, and I'm sorry.

Anyway, IGN reckons that the voice commands during the really impressive Xbox One multitasking and UI demonstration weren't real time at all... they were being controller by a clicker.

Whereas I think it's okay that a Kinect wouldn't be able to be completely reliable in a presentation environment, I still think it's kind of sleazy that they tried to pass it off as the real thing when it wasn't. I wish they had put a small disclaimer, or anything. Right now, the most impressive thing about the Xbox One stands to be jeopardized because of needless speculation.

After MS blue screen of death during a windows presentation I bet they don't want to have that shit happen all over again ;)

^ It was obvious it was going to be faked before it even started. It's like nobody's seen an MS motion control demo from the last several years.

So nobody is surprised but yesterday there was a thread of people saying Wow at Kinect 2 tech.

It's almost as if GAF is made up of maaaaany different people.

Not shocking, I kinda knew it. They already did it in the past but it's still embarrassing.

Absolutely amazing.

Well, there were many Kinect demos done off stage that were not faked and looked pretty impressive. So, there's that.

I surprised anybody thought that wasn't staged, and I don't say that to insult Microsoft. It's an unusual situation, being on stage trying to demo that live wouldn't be smart, what if his mic level dropped and the kinect didn't pick up his commands, what if there was a sudden delay from the xbox to the big screen behind him which made it look like the app switching was slower then it was. Way too many stage demos have failed to expect companies to continue doing it live.

I agree that it's a bit smiley of MS to portray it as being real, even going as far saying, "Lets see that again, wasn't that fast!" But that's why you should never take that stuff at face value, wait for the closed room demonstrations with journalists who haven't been trained how to use to make your final opinion.

Pretty much this - everything thing is smoke and mirrors until demonstrated by those who aren't vested in these devices (and that includes some journalists). E3 will reveal more but even that won't give the full picture as neither device is ready yet.

GAF where the MS hate never ceaseth to flow.

Getting a bit annoyed with it too be honest but whatever. I just love how PS4 makes claims and doesn't show anything (instant game playing/ps1/ps2/ps3 library all available online etc), MS at least tries to show something (like the Kinect working) and GAF crucifies them.

Either way i'm getting both...GAF's hate will always be a mystery to me.

But they didn't try to show it working, they faked it blatantly.

Keep being a corporate, fanboy apologist though. Microsoft's train-wreck of a console and presentation has nothing to do with Sony. Its only on themselves.

But Sony themselves have said that it is not ready and have made no claims other than that they would like to make it happen and are working on it? Rather different thing than what is being discussed, no?

Oh i thought the instant gaming was something they claimed to have up and going? I know the backwards compatible stuff wasn't but thought instant gaming was? Either way I still don't understand GAF's hate. Its like GAF says oh its popular in merica thus we must hate it! Very strange to me....

They invited everyman and his dog behind closed doors to demo the performance increase of kinect 2, no one with half a brain cell thinks what was shown on stage won't be what we get at launch.

There are genuine things to be disappointed at with MS, this ain't one.

Lying about CGI as in-game is bad,
Peddling dreams is dishonest
Staging things to guard against technical issues is smart.

Have you not been watching E3 for the last few years?

And calling some one a fanboy / apologist for this is ridiculous..

It's like GAF had been invaded by a bunch of crying kids, and the level of irrationality is scary, people so easily fuelled by any story about MS that can be spun negatively, it's showing how easily brainwashed people can be.

There are serious discussions to be had over many things, but like I DRM, but the irrational noise is just way too high.. It's clearly MS's fault, but even I can sympathise with them in how lack of information had been interpreted as paranoid negativity..

I'm just waiting for the policies to be announced, then vote with my wallet, and will keep the crying to a minimum.

You really think Microsoft would do that, host a conference and tell lies?

Can't fault people for this.... Microsoft is shady as hell.... the last Kinect proved the point, and people are not ready to accept the new Kinect due to that fact.

I really would like to meet this "GAF" person. Could you introduce me?

But the point is that Microsoft did show it to journalists during private shows after the conference. There are videos on YouTube showing how Kinect 2 works. It's not like the very first Natal video (with the family on the couch playing various games and doing stuff) where it was all just a concept.

I'm seriously surprised people are surprised that Microsoft (or any other company) wouldn't want to present those things in real time. It's a conference that is watched by millions of people all over the world. Even if you have the best and foolproof hardware and/or software (not saying that Xbone or Kinect 2 is), there're too many factors that can fuck things up that are not related with the stuff you're presenting. And the last thing you want to happen during such conference is having a giant blue screen of death on a telebim, Internet disconnecting when you want to show Skype conversations, Kinect not catching your voice properly because you're in a huge tent with hundreds of people (i.e. environment that isn't representative to the living room you will be using your Kinect in), no NBA matches when you want to show real-time updates of NBA scores in your interface etc. Even during my university years my lecturers ecnouraged us to use screencast during presentations to ommit any interferances and to make the presentation go smoothly no matter what and leave real-time demos for after the presentation.

People are bringing up the Zelda SS demo to make a point that "at least Nintendo didn't fake their show". Sure, but after that demo people on the Internet thought that Wiimote doesn't work so well with the game, that all those problems will be there when they buy a game, and that it was a big fail. But in that case neither the hardware nor the game was a problem. (IIRC) Interfances (that most likely don't appear in your average living room) caused the problem. The same with Microsoft's infmaous speech recognition in Windows Vista presentation - from what I read the problem was caused by both the ambient noise (echo) in the room and by the low-level bug with controlling the gain on the microphone that wasn't fixed at the time. While the end product (speech recognition in Vista) isn't perfect, it isn't anywhere as bad as one would think it was thanks to that presentation.

So what's the consensus of opinion on here? If it DOES work the way MS say it does then you don't mind sharing your private life with MS or any other body MS decide to sell that data to?

Whether it works or not isn't the main concern.

Define "your private life".

If Beyonce lip-syncing caused such a huge controversy then this should as well.

Why are they connected? No clue, but they are.

I know this is a funny prospect, but at 1:44:18 and numerous times afterwards he issues the "command" with his hands outside of his pockets.

That said, surely it's more believable that one of the many xbox reps that are in the tent (and audience lol..) are pressing the slideshow button? xD
Yup,if they did that,it will be someone off stage
Can't believe gaffers believe this when even many comments in the IGN link not

I understand why they'd want to fake it, and I don't blame them, it's a tech show-case and they have to make sure someone doesn't ruin it by shouting Xbox commands, and if it works at home, no problems. Actually, he himself ironically ruined it for people watching the stream on Xbox with Kinect, as the Kinects were actually receiving commands!

That said, it absolutely makes no sense why HE has to be the one doing the switch. Even a half-witted assistant could press buttons everytime he uttered "Xbox ___"..

Go on over to your Xbox 360, turn it on, control it via voice commands. It works right now for pete's sake yes? And on a 360 at that. So, do you still think they "faked" the Kinect 2 because it's all smoke and mirrors? If so, your logic is pretty screwed up - or you have some kind of strange blind hate going on there that makes you not see the forest for the trees.

Well it's bad "news" about MS so only few people will actual read the article

I think it rather shows that company which created it is not confident in product to show it live on stage.

What we saw was just few videos from perfect condition stages. I will believe it if some journo will take it home and review it in his house

I don't think it is MS hate so much as a current love of Sony, to be fair. They are given a lot of credit for unproven features, true, and I also notice that whenever any feature from the others can be contrived by some combination of Sony peripherals, there is a lot of handwaving.

But that's neither here nor there.

MS made their bed with this conference. It was 80% Kinect 2.0 TV features, 10% horrifying DRM and likely unprecedented anti-consumer policies, and 10% EA and CoD.For people who don't particularly care for EA Sports or horrifying anti-consumer DRM, the Kinect 2.0 TV stuff was the last leg to stand on. And however pointlessly unrelated to gaming it was, it was at least quick, accurate, and smooth.

This isn't MS being "crucified" so much as, for me, just disappointment at the only neutral leg the conference had to stand on (the impressive responsiveness of Kinect 2.0) being faked.

Jeez you really can't be serious. MS is not a person who can be hated. You need to think exactly what you are trying to defend; it's no matter to hate. What MS has presented until now is a fucking train wreck, plus the major feature in the presentation was faked & the poor MS not deserve all those critics because at least they have showed something compared to sony? The only more thing showed it's just the case of the console, come on.

While I hate the kinect you have to give them some slack.. A stage in a theater is not the same as a room in your home. I am sure there is complications with sound environment in that situation.

There's really nothing weird about faking it as long as they weren't bragging about how the very specifics of it worked. I imagine the line about how fast switching to TV was was about the system's response time and not how well the voice recognition worked, but to most people that's probably inseparable. Decoding voice takes quite a bit of time.
