Speaking of deceit... what was the purpose of revealing that Pycelle wasn't as enfeebled as he lets on? They just revealed that and then nothing came of it. I wonder if it'll be important in the future. He hasn't really played an important part in season 3.
Just to show he's not as feeble and old as he pretends to be, and is a player in the game. I'm surprised he hasn't had any material this season though. Varys and Littlefinger both had scenes that showed how dangerous they are, I figured Prycelle would be given a similar scene; although the show has mentioned that he opened the gates for Tywin, leading to the sacking of King's Landing/fall of the Mad King. I know the actor has sort of complained in the past about not having much to do.
Yes. He quite obviously has an agenda and is very controlling. Him and littlefinger have different end goals, but they both most definitely care about who is king and who has power.
what will happen if Jon goes back to the wall? i assume he's going to find some way to betray the wildlings since they've shoved it in our face repeatedly that he is still loyal to the nights watch. but if he shows up with a bunch of strangers who attack the wall, how do we know they won't just kill him right there? does he count as a deserter?
i like the song that Cersei talks about to Maerjory (how the hell do you spell her name? scared to google it, but i know its weird because i watch with the captions on =/). half of it is some guy trying to make a badass boast, but Tywin's just like BYAH and murders everyone. Crazy. But I think that Cersei and Joffrey are making bad decisions by showing everyone how out of hand they are. Cersei's threat and Joffrey's behavior at the wedding are probably making the Tyrells really wary. But why is Joffrey still being mean to Sansa? I thought the girl Joffrey's supposed to marry was Sansa's friend. Shouldn't she have asked him to be nice to her?
I don't like this new guy with Jorah and everyone else. She asked why he should trust her but all he said was "lol cuz ur hawt and i do wut i want"
Why did they burn the leeches? Was it supposed to be some kind of sacrifice or something? I don't buy that it's supposed to kill the people named. I think what it's supposed to do is give them bad luck or something ambiguous. That way the witch lady can say "see, look what I made happen" but it's really just dumb luck and she still gets to do whatever she wanted to do with the bastard at first. If she could burn a few leeches and kill someone, why didn't they do that with Stannis's brother? Seems less conspicuous.
I wonder how Arya will feel about having to marry a Fray
In the preview for next episode,
Edmure looks really happy and surrounded by beautiful women. maybe the Frays aren't as gross as Catlyn and that other guy seem to think. Arya threatened the hound...
Maybe Arya will run away and get lost. I hope not, I really want her to be back with her family. Do you think we'll see Rob fight again? We haven't since season 1, I think.

Yeah 45 minute wait, but could sit on the Iron Throne, play the Blackwater Bay game and see the whole exhibition, so well worth it. The Hounds helmet is so badass. Needle was there as well

He broke his vows, killed a brother, and deserted the group. He shouldn't be allowed back, but he can't stay with the wildlings, so he'll probably just lie and say they abducted him or he was on a mission or something. Btw- where's Ghost?!

Ok, don't want to sound all witchunty/start the same old arguments again, but you've read the books right? Can you not come in here and "speculate" about character's intentions.

Are you serious right now? I'm not hiding the fact that I've read the books, but this isn't speculation. These characters have made their intentions clear throughout the past 3 seasons. Do I need to cite specific scenes that characterize them this way? Does anyone think Varys and Littlefinger aren't influential? Are we all watching the same show?
I don't think you need hindsight to see that Varys does indeed car who's king to the extent that it serves the realm. At least so far he's made his intentions pretty clear. He wants what's best for everyone and/or what's peaceful for everyone. He also doesn't want someone serving dark forces to be the head of the realm.
So while he doesn't care who in particular is king in a way he does in general care who is king in that those kings have consequences. He'll serve the good of the realm over any particular king.
So, for serving Dany or not no one knows. He was obviously fine with killing her when that was for the good of the realm (Dany stomping in with dragons would be pretty bad for everyone, really). Now that the realm is in chaos already if she could present a sort of uniting force, I don't know, and we don't know.

This is assuming that Varys isn't a liar when it suits his purposes. For all we know, all of his talk about saving the realm is a bunch of BS and he does support one ruler or another for whatever end he seeks.
Ok, done with this thread. If it's really OK for people to roll in from the spoiler thread, quote someone's speculation and say 'lol!' basically saying they're wrong then what's the point.

While I agree with you, that has no speculation in it. Varys and Littlefinger stated as much in their latest scene, with LF doing his speech about "The Climb".
He said he wanted to stop Stannis from becoming King for "the good of the realm", but in actuality, it's because he had a grudge against the people who serve the Lord of Fire. So really he can hide any guise he wishes under "the good of the realm" and no one would question his motives otherwise. He just wants power and control, like everyone else.

I suppose he could be, but I don't think the evidence yet shows that.
To me it feels like Varys and Littlefinger are a sort of yin and yang to each other. Varys is working for the realm and its long-term well being. Littlefinger is the opposite. He's chaos, because he knows the more shit he can stir up the more likely he is to emerge at the top. That makes sense both for what he's been doing, and it makes sense in a literary sort of way. Varys is there to highlight that what's good for the realm may not always be good for a particular person. In Ned's case what was good for the realm was not his release. Varys thought what was good for the realm would be if he just confessed to treason and spent his days on the wall. No rebellions on that route. Varys in that scene highlighted perfectly how at odds that is with the fact that the audience was supposed to cheer for him over all. Of course that instance didn't work in Varys or the realm's favor anyway, but still that was the easiest example I could choose from.

Yeah, but Stannis is following a verifiable witch that spouts out shadow demons from her vagina, and Varys witnessed some of that same sort of black magic. Lesser things have been known to cause one to not think it'd be in a country/kingdom's best interest to have someone like that in charge.
What I mean to say is in what world is it irrational to not want Stannis as king, seeing as he's following some strange black magic vagina demon spewing mystery lady. That seems kind of rational to me, especially if, as I said, he's supposed to be the foil to Littlefinger's chaos. Demonic powers like that are the embodiment of a sort of chaos.

True enough. I was just pointing out that even if Varys was lying about the voice in the fire, getting castrated so a sorcerer could complete his ritual would leave one hateful of magic.

I don't get it. I would have said "lol!" to that speculation too and I haven't read the books past the first. It's pretty obvious from watching the show that Varys DOES care about who is king. It's not speculation if its flat out wrong.

Maybe. But people who have read past where the show is in the story should not be able to come into this thread and shoot down the speculation of someone who has not read the books.

Except by this point in the show you should know that the speculation in question is wrong, if you don't you haven't been paying attention. He wasn't giving away any new info or insight at all.

Coming from the person who admitted to reading the books and clearly posted some spoilers causing a mod to remove his posts? Maybe take a look in the mirror.
You can't say you know all his intentions, no. But that wasn't even what was implied. All that's being said is that he does, indeed, care who sits on the throne. That much is obvious.

And I did not post any spoilers whatsoever. That's a fact. Ask the Mod who removed all the posts.
The only thing that happened was that some book reader had commented on the way Jon Snow's physical appearance was described in Book 1, and then I made a few comments about how that was nothing for people in this thread to worry about and there was some pointless back-and-forth squabbling over it.
It's amazing how people can get so concerned over what Jon Snow LOOKS LIKE and think it doesn't matter when someone who has read all the books "LOLs" at someone's theory of Varys' intentions.

If you read the comments, you may see that I was one of the first to say why Varys probably does in fact care about who is King.
I'm simply saying that it's not right for someone who has clearly read all the books to come in here and quote someone's speculation about a character and say "LOL!".
