This, a hundred times this. Consumers do not exist to feed the egos of devs who just have to have a "AAA" title on their resume. Adding expensive cinematics, voiceovers, and a huge marketing budget to a B-tier game doesn't make it AAA, it puts you out of business. As someone who's had access to expense info down to the translation cost of a single instruction pamphlet into one language, it's aggravating to see good profitable B-tier games balloon into company-destroying AAA ones.

Videogames are trivial. They do not need to exist. It they can't figure out how to survive without trampling consumer rights, they can all die.

There was a pretty good discussion on the latest Weekend Confirmed where they compared it to the film industry. Film studios usually have one or two big releases each year that then fund the smaller efforts and those, accordingly, don't need to do huge business. By contrast Square-Enix needed Sleeping Dogs and Hitman: Absolution, which aren't blockbuster games by any stretch of the imagination, to do comparatively huge numbers. If 2 million copies of Sleeping Dogs is barely good enough to break even then the industry deserves to crash. Look at the best-selling games in North America last year:

Call of Duty: Black Ops II
Madden NFL 13
Halo 4
Assassin's Creed III
Just Dance 4
NBA 2K13
Borderlands 2
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3
Lego Batman 2: DC Super Heroes
FIFA Soccer 13

2011?

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3
Just Dance 3
Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
Battlefield 3
Madden NFL 12
Call of Duty: Black Ops
Batman: Arkham City
Gears of War 3
Just Dance 2
Assassin's Creed: Revelations

2010?

Call of Duty: Black Ops
Madden NFL 11
Halo: Reach
New Super Mario Bros. Wii
Red Dead Redemption
Wii Fit Plus
Just Dance 2
Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood
NBA 2K11

Take Two announced recently that Borderlands 2 sold 6 million copies. Publishers expect every game to do those numbers. Every game can't be the fucking best-selling game of the year.

So, I didn't read all the previous 30 pages but it seems that Angry Joe is mobilizing too. That's great. Something else of importance?
Good morning Euro-GAF.

I have an Android app that aggregates all the tending PS4 stories from around the web and about 50% displaying are related to the DRM issue this morning. Many of which seem to reference this campaign, so I think it is definitely making an impact. At the moment it is less well known sites, but often the bigger sites follow once they check sources and get done official comments.

I agree with Jaffe.. some of the used game revenue should go back to the developers.. make it a 50-50 split... work with gamestop on this.

If you resell your TV at home, should some of that money be given to the designer of said TV? Why should it be any different for video game discs?

If developers are finding it hard to make profit, then they need to find other ways of addressing the problem. Market forces will determine who stays afloat, and eventually things will work out. Used games has nothing to do with it.

I just want to say one obvious thing (and sorry if it is said previously):

In the case Microsoft will go with DRM and Sony not, there would be two scenarios:

1) Microsoft sells more than Sony: In this case, Sony will introduce DRM in PS4 so they can earn more money, once it's proved that DRM doesn't affect sales.

2) Sony sells more than Microsoft: In this case, Microsoft probably remove DRM from Xbox One so they can compete with Sony.

So, future next gen buyers: please choose carefully what do you want in the future. To have DRM in the next gen consoles is up to you.

Good morning Euro-GAF.

Mornin'

I'll just get a cup of coffee before starting the rounds on twitter.

I believe they tried tweeting the pope, not sure what the status is on that.

Retweeted a couple of tweets this morning, watched the Jimquisition yesterday and it was really spot on.

To everyone here, good job.

my props to sunhilegend :)

Its worth pointing out that for used games to have such a huge presence, a shit load of new copies need to have been purchased in the first place.

Now is the right time to stir things up for the attention of Euro PlayStation contacts.

Yesterday was amazing, but it was also a bank holiday in the UK, where SCEE is based :) It's now 9am, and UK based companies should be getting back to work. Noise this morning would be a good idea :)

I have updated the tweet links in the Open Letter to target PlayStationEU and other SCEE accounts as well as the UK wing of publishers: http://gofreak-ie.appspot.com/ps4usedgames

@PlaystationEU
@SCEEBlog
@ElectronicArts
@Capcom_UK
@Ubisoft

( As well as, still, the big wigs in Japan and the US, @yosp, @philrosenberg )

If anyone has more personal accounts of relevant people in the european arms of these companies, that'd be great.

Share, tweet, link...anything! Just do it :)

Later I'll switch things back in the open letter to target the US. It'll also be their first day back after the weekend...but for now, let's work Europe.

Thanks, I'll try to fit him in. Not sure why I didn't think of him...I thought of him as more aligned to indies, but in the absence of anyone more suitable I'll try to add him :)

Shahid is an internal power broker at SCEE he would be a good person to get involved, and tbh he sounds like he is on our side.

What if to give devs and pubs some money from the used games thinghy you are able to do an online free contribution through PSN or XBL?
A sort of online pass but with a free offer, well visible when starting the game.

I will for sure accept a thing like this and surely contribute when buying a used game.

Bad idea?

Done! I've been doing my part during downtime at work yesterday and today. Keep on tweeting/spreading the message my good video game loving people.

HOLY COW! my gaf account was activated in like 3 DAYS. i was expecting months.. what a nice surprise, first post!

but i am a regular reader here. in fact i've been here refreshing this page all day.

i've been actively supporting this movement since the beginning (well, a couple hours after the beginning) i have sent out a bunch of tweets among other things. i intend to continue to support this!

Lucky

Mine took 5 months to approve lol

Good to have more people on board

1. check out this video and spread it. It's great!
http://youtu.be/lY9iYzqdVZc

2. Would be cool if one of the GIF experts here could do something Mastercard style...
"Additional income through anti-used-game DRM: 1.000.000
Loss of new game sales because people discover fewer games: -1.000.000
Earning the respect of gamers worldwide: priceless!

:)

either twitter is blocking various tweets or my account got blocked. Either way... ***** move.

maybe you should avoid spamming people then...

there is a difference between informing people of your opinion and harassing (spamming) them.
if you send the same message to the same people several times you are doing it wrong and they might report you for spamming

it is the number of people who send the message that matters, not the number of tweets

be gentle out there people

I leaned on Eurogamer about a story, they say they're investigating so fingers crossed :)

I may reach out to other journos individually throughout the day who might be interested.

Also still considering an adword keyword campaign on ps4...or maybe some others too. Like 'Sony investor relations' :P
