Sonic Lost Worlds Debut Trailer [Up: Wii U + 3DS screenshots]

Is the cycle broken?

Yep, I think he directed the originals, but afterward he was a Lead/Game Designer then onwards.

So maybe he's back to directing, or at least doing levels or even as said as Lead Game Designer, which I think is pretty close to directing, he would have the game in his hands basically.

Damn,.. if this is true then THIS is going to be a bomb game!

To me it looks like a mash up of the two concepts. Sonic Xtreme always looked to be more of a vertical experience (based on footage I've seen) and Galaxy obviously had a mixture of different sized planetoids for Mario to move from and the obvious effects of gravity from it.

This looks like the gravity aspect is gone but they kept the multiple planetoid concept so worlds aren't just one long stretch for Sonic to cruise down. Based on the trailer everything definitely keeps that cylinder look from Xtreme.

Curious to find out how much of a role Nintendo has played during this game's development.
yep to me it looks like the Sega Saturn Sonic Xtreme concept with some Galaxy inspired refinements
I remember when Galaxy was first shown, people were actually saying it reminded them of the Sonic Xtreme concept.
yep I remember that.

If those are Wisps... I'm conflicted. They were a rather fun gimmick in Colors but pretty bad in Generations. Going back to the former I realized how much the latter tainted my opinion of them. I hope they're purely optional if anything because I'm more excited about Sonic's new abilities.

On the other hand, a substantial deal of the abilities the Wisps possess could actually work well in a Super Mario Galaxy-like environment. Galaxy 2 had a Drill power up that worked really well, and as such the Yellow Wisp already sells itself. Laser as well is largely inoffensive and could be great in a tube-like environment. Spike might be redundant but it suits the world. Cube... could really work well for puzzles honestly. It would be a great fit if it can actually be utilized as a bounce ability instead of stopping flow and smashing the ground slowly. Frenzy and Rocket are completely throwaway though.

Wisps were optional in Colours, so I don't think that will be an issue. Plus, the fact that the trailer made no reference to them at all gives me the impression that they will be less vital to the overall experience.

Why doesn't this game look like this with even more finesse from the WiiU additional power? ugh, so underwhelming. I hope this also isn't the graphical standard we can expect from 3D Mario :/ Even though they will surely have a superior artstyle to what is shown here, but I really just finally want some 1st party games that feel like that they don't belong on the goddamn original Wii. And I'm already sick of waiting. X is probably like 2 years away too :((

I think it may be an artistic choice to go for a look more similar to the original games.

I mean screens of Sonic and the Black knight on Wii look more visually impressive thanks to thousands of blades of grass and the lighting.

Just had a thought.

If Yasuhara is behind this... who's to say this isn't by NST?

Sonic Team would obviously be helping, but I don't know, it'd make sense also due to the graphics being not as good as Gens which used the Hedgehog Engine and the like, and naturally NST would not have had HD experience prior.

Would ensure 60fps, as Nintendo always strives for it when appropriate, it'd be so here.

Nintendo does not have much experience with HD. so maybe thats why the technical aspect of graphics does look decent... so this is might be Nintendo team behind this.. hmm..

True enough. Generations did force them upon you though because it had to abide by the level gimmicks and such, so I hope they took some pointers since then.

From the screenshots of the Cyan Wisp and the laser crystals, they don't seem that forced at all. I imagine they'll serve as another avenue for accessing other paths, alongside Sonic's new abilities, which will likely take precedence.

I really hope Sega can knock this game out of the park. They seem to be moving in the right direction with Unleashed daytime levels, Colors, and Generations but it hasn't been enough to dispel qualms about the quality of Sonic. Hopefully this game will bring Sonic back to a respectable level known more for its games than for fanart.

I feel the qualms about the quality of Sonic comes from the fact that people haven't played Sonic's recent games.

Why do people insist this every time? HD is a resolution. Nothing more. Nintendo may not be used to the bigger development budgets that have become the norm, but HD itself is only a resolution.

Yeah, Nintendo assets look pretty damn good blown up to HD with some AA, as Dolphin proves.

Does anybody know the real reason for why characters in Japanese fiction sometimes run like that? I always thought it was because they were supposedly running so fast that their arms are pushed behind them by the wind. I would love to learn the real history.

Just my speculation, but I believe it's to cut corners. With regards to anime and manga, everything is about cutting corners.

In anime, such a pose is much easier to animate. You really only have to animate the legs. A standard running pose is a lot tougher to animate in that there are more moving parts. Most anime is done on the cheap. Plus it looks cool.

In manga, the same reasons apply. It's harder to do a good running pose. Arms out is easier to draw. Plus it looks cool.

In short: time/money constraints and it looks cool.

Game looks really good btw.

If this comes out the same time as 3D Mario and both are good games I will buy both and ascend into platforming nirvana.

If this comes out the same time as 3D Mario you can put them both in the Wii U and it becomes Sonic & Mario. But make sure you finish it before you have to return the game to Blockbuster.

H D.. ITS so easy to say it.. I know HD is resolution but.. you know what I really meant with HD..

What I'm not getting in this thread are the people who are complaining that this game has the graphics it does and asking why it doesn't have more detail, and so on.

To me, Sonic games were about bright, vibrant colours, and backgrounds and levels that weren't visually complex but were striking and bold.

This game seems to convey the classic atmosphere absolutely perfectly.

Y'know, that WOULD make a lot of sense. :o maybe you're right!
