whats ironic about not wanting to have kinect mandatory, or concern about tv features reducing the ram usage for games, along with all the other things like " we aren't focusing on high end graphics" to paint a vivid image of a game device.I am taking Sessler's advice and waiting until the facts come out from both Sony and MS before I decide who is arrogant. Show me dem games already!
I find it ironic that GAF somewhat arrogantly deems winners and losers of consoles before they even have all the data.
Yet, GAF is still the best site in gaming because of the passion and humor.
Less we forget both companies are familiar with total BS at their reveals. Never forget "velocity girl" and editing forza cars from your phone. Or the Killzone trailer and 2 HDMI ports with 240 hz cell sauce.
I will believe all of the kinect improvements when I experience them for myself, and I will buy into the cloud claims from both MS and Sony when they are demoed in real time.
Microsoft's arrogance is extremely puzzling to me. At least Sony had two record breaking consoles and over 10 years of market dominance to justify their extreme arrogance. The 360 is ultimately going to come in last place to one console that basically quit selling in 2010 and another console that started off at $599 and one year later.
I have the creeping fear that the Xbone will still be a big success, even with these policies implemented. :/
I've amended my post with clarification and happily stand corrected.
I honestly never knew it actually came out - I have a PS3 so maybe I'll check it out. I used it in my example as the first footage of it shown was some renders of animals - with no clue as to how the gameplay would actually unfold. It was - in its first appearance - a non-game to me. Clearly that subsequently changed.
I think the incompetent people running Microsoft recently found out they had an Xbox division.

There is no way to know until we get more details about the console.
Is Microsoft's big jump in market share from Xbox to Xbox 360 and increase in profitability and momentum the cause for their recent seemingly "arrogant" and anti-consumer behavior and will it humble them like the $599 launch price did with Sony last generation?
Always online, DRM, kinect, entertainment focus, etc. and possibly price are all signs that perhaps they are overestimating them Xbox brand and the market like Sony did with the PS3? Now, I don't think the end result will be quite as negative and anti-consumer as everything seems right now, but it is still disappointing to see Microsoft going the other direction after what they built with the 360 (online fees and dlc, aside).
Thoughts?
"We're going to continue to innovate, continue to add new experiences, and make it better every single year. Right now we're eight years into this platform - we didn't have a single music video [at launch], we didn't have any entertainment, and now we're seeing half our usage globally driven from entertainment apps. And so we think the story will evolve and continue to get better over time."

I dont think that Bluray counts as a forced console component on the same line as Kinect because a disc drive was needed. Sony could have used a DVD-ROM instead of course, but they went with the latest disc technology instead, and they needed a disc drive regardless (it was too early to make a digital download only system). With Kinect, eventhough that it will be well integrated, i see it more as an addon, not really a necessary part of the system like a disc drive is. I guess maybe you mean that both the Bluray and Kinect adds a good cost to the overall price, and that is true. And there are indeed some parallels between Microsoft and Sony like you mention. The parallels are massive:
-Misguided hardware
-Dripping arrogance
-Meandering presentation
-Forced console components (Blu Ray/Kinect)
-Focus on non-games (remember demo of Afrika that showed zero gameplay?)
-Appalling Communication/contradictory messaging
-Phil Harrison
Microsoft have become Sony circa 2006. Nintendo have become Sega circa 1998. Sony have become - well - I'm still figuring that one out. Something good though.
The marketplace has driven what the Xbox One has become. Isn't Netflix most watched on PS3 or something like that? Its the gaming world that we live in.
Well they made a lot of money and stole a ton of marketshare (and mindshare) IN AMERICA from Sony. Should they be proud? You bet. Arrogant? No way.

Fixed.
I think a lot of people including MS foolishly take a super NA-centric view of this past generation.
This is true. I think the true test may be the pricing, Sony came off as excessively arrogant but if they worked a miracle and sold at $300/400 I don't think it'd stick out as badly.MS doesn't seem arrogant to me. It seems like they are trying to adapt their strategy for the coming generation and that this is straining their relationship with the core gamer. Sure the exec here or there could have worded something a little better, but it seems like the core gamer is overly sensitive to comments or phrases. Literally everything they say now is being pissed on and mocked by Gaf...even supposedly good news is twisted to a negative perspective.
Too early. If they deliver the goods at E3 and the price is right all of this nonsense will be for not a damn thing.

Admittedly "arrogant" and "out of touch" aren't really the same. Even if I'm starting to think this is their consolation prize for not enabling it to be a true cable box and so they're trying to sell this whether or not they agree it's a bad idea. What exactly appeals to the "coming generation" about live TV. Seriously
That "Core gamers will buy anything" comment isn't helping them
$600 for a smartphone people do not complain.
$600 for a game / entertainment device is cheap.
I don't spend 60 dollars per app for my phone.
Do you keep your phone for more then 2 years?
coming gen of consoles...not a particular demographic. And making the tv experience more interactive is appealing to more than just gamers. We're used to so much interactivity with out smartphones and tablets but the tv seems stuck in decades old tech. If some of these casuals buy the XB1 then it could pay off for MS. Many analysts continue to expect apple to take over in this realm with new product announcements. What exactly appeals to the "coming generation" about live TV. Seriously
