Is Microsot's arrogance blinding them like Sony was with $599?

Fair question.

Recession and competition for the public's hard won cash will likely hit MS and Sony equally so pricing is absolutely relevant.

I think particularly USA will continue to buy MS Xbox brand and buy into their marketing,

Sony is pushing out all the right messages, however pricing and handling the USA market for them will be really important I think.

I am taking Sessler's advice and waiting until the facts come out from both Sony and MS before I decide who is arrogant. Show me dem games already!

I find it ironic that GAF somewhat arrogantly deems winners and losers of consoles before they even have all the data.

Yet, GAF is still the best site in gaming because of the passion and humor.

Less we forget both companies are familiar with total BS at their reveals. Never forget "velocity girl" and editing forza cars from your phone. Or the Killzone trailer and 2 HDMI ports with 240 hz cell sauce.

I will believe all of the kinect improvements when I experience them for myself, and I will buy into the cloud claims from both MS and Sony when they are demoed in real time.

whats ironic about not wanting to have kinect mandatory, or concern about tv features reducing the ram usage for games, along with all the other things like " we aren't focusing on high end graphics" to paint a vivid image of a game device.

again people like you seem to be ignoring the legitimate gripes of many posters in this very thread to lul@ironygaf.

Microsoft's arrogance is extremely puzzling to me. At least Sony had two record breaking consoles and over 10 years of market dominance to justify their extreme arrogance. The 360 is ultimately going to come in last place to one console that basically quit selling in 2010 and another console that started off at $599 and one year later.

Fixed. ;)

Not only are they totally blind, but they don't even have the same sort of worldwide dominance that the PS2 had....

I don't get how it's even *possible* for a company to be this collectively idiotic. You meant to tell me that in a corporation of nearly 100k employees not ONE has gone against the sheer cognitive dissonance these fools are showing?

Price isn't a barrier to most adults, unfortunately most adults to which price isn't a barrier don't have the time to play games. Not good marketing.

This is the same company that thought Windows 8 was a great idea not that long ago. It's conceivable that Microsoft believes they can get away with an absurd price for a game console with lots of multimedia "home entertainment hub" add-ons aimed at a broad market. I don't think it'll work, but I just wouldn't put it past them at this point after that trainwreck of an unveiling.

I have the creeping fear that the Xbone will still be a big success, even with these policies implemented. :/

I think so too, this thing is going to sell. Maybe not to the "GAF" demographic but it will sell, especially if it's bundled through cable providers.

And I still think Sony is going to implement some kind of DRM scheme, their silence is telling.

I wouldn't call it arrogance. I think they've been thinking about this for ages. They're a software company--look how crazy they are about Windows pricing and licensing. It's in their DNA.

I've amended my post with clarification and happily stand corrected.

I honestly never knew it actually came out - I have a PS3 so maybe I'll check it out. I used it in my example as the first footage of it shown was some renders of animals - with no clue as to how the gameplay would actually unfold. It was - in its first appearance - a non-game to me. Clearly that subsequently changed.

You are a good man, Mama Robotnik.

I shall recall the family of violent anteaters I deployed to your house.

Of course it is and all of these vague details aren't helping their cause. Some of them are even trying to back pedal but the damage has been done.

They are even trying to back pedal on the indie game issue by saying they will have an indie program but can't say anything right now. They can't say anything because they haven't got anything and don't know what they are doing. Just like everything else.

I don't think I have ever seen such a mess from a single company in my entire life.

I think the incompetent people running Microsoft recently found out they had an Xbox division.

I can totally see this happening.
It's amusing to think about.

Combine this with the leadership changes over the past few years...

Well they made a lot of money and stole a ton of marketshare (and mindshare) from Sony. Should they be proud? You bet. Arrogant? No way.

Rather their greed than their arrogance.

And a whole gen of doubling down on 100m marketing budgets and bloated dev budgets has led publishers (and them) here, they are beyond the turn of no return as far as they're concerned.

Is Microsoft's big jump in market share from Xbox to Xbox 360 and increase in profitability and momentum the cause for their recent seemingly "arrogant" and anti-consumer behavior and will it humble them like the $599 launch price did with Sony last generation?

Always online, DRM, kinect, entertainment focus, etc. and possibly price are all signs that perhaps they are overestimating them Xbox brand and the market like Sony did with the PS3? Now, I don't think the end result will be quite as negative and anti-consumer as everything seems right now, but it is still disappointing to see Microsoft going the other direction after what they built with the 360 (online fees and dlc, aside).

Thoughts?

"We're going to continue to innovate, continue to add new experiences, and make it better every single year. Right now we're eight years into this platform - we didn't have a single music video [at launch], we didn't have any entertainment, and now we're seeing half our usage globally driven from entertainment apps. And so we think the story will evolve and continue to get better over time."

Forget Africa, get Tokyo Jungle :D

The parallels are massive:

-Misguided hardware
-Dripping arrogance
-Meandering presentation
-Forced console components (Blu Ray/Kinect)
-Focus on non-games (remember demo of Afrika that showed zero gameplay?)
-Appalling Communication/contradictory messaging
-Phil Harrison

Microsoft have become Sony circa 2006. Nintendo have become Sega circa 1998. Sony have become - well - I'm still figuring that one out. Something good though.
I dont think that Bluray counts as a forced console component on the same line as Kinect because a disc drive was needed. Sony could have used a DVD-ROM instead of course, but they went with the latest disc technology instead, and they needed a disc drive regardless (it was too early to make a digital download only system). With Kinect, eventhough that it will be well integrated, i see it more as an addon, not really a necessary part of the system like a disc drive is. I guess maybe you mean that both the Bluray and Kinect adds a good cost to the overall price, and that is true. And there are indeed some parallels between Microsoft and Sony like you mention.

The marketplace has driven what the Xbox One has become. Isn't Netflix most watched on PS3 or something like that? Its the gaming world that we live in.

Im really getting the feeling that a lot of people on here have no idea what people are doing with these boxes. To hear some you would think that the majority use it as a game only device where the #'s show otherwise.

Wow. Think some folks need anger management or a hug from Mom. Why not wait until they price the system first.

Microsoft isn't arrogant, they are just focusing on a market segment larger than the one they've already conquered. They want world domination; not the heart of gamers. Sony is taking the opposite approach

MS doesn't seem arrogant to me. It seems like they are trying to adapt their strategy for the coming generation and that this is straining their relationship with the core gamer. Sure the exec here or there could have worded something a little better, but it seems like the core gamer is overly sensitive to comments or phrases. Literally everything they say now is being pissed on and mocked by Gaf...even supposedly good news is twisted to a negative perspective.

This is true. I think the true test may be the pricing, Sony came off as excessively arrogant but if they worked a miracle and sold at $300/400 I don't think it'd stick out as badly.

What exactly appeals to the "coming generation" about live TV. Seriously

I really don't get this! So all Sony fans thinks PS 4 will...
1. have more games fore the core
2. have free online multiplayer or no pay wall
3. have no restriction for used games
4. have first focus on the core gamers
5. have very little or no focus on things you can can do with your console except gaming.

Good luck whith that analysis, you guys and girls will soon wake up. Business is business if it's MS or Sony it doesn't mather.

Admittedly "arrogant" and "out of touch" aren't really the same. Even if I'm starting to think this is their consolation prize for not enabling it to be a true cable box and so they're trying to sell this whether or not they agree it's a bad idea.

One thing I'll give Microsoft.. they are the only company to have committed themselves to Jeff Rigby's demand for an HDMI in port.

That may be all it takes this gen.

Don't think for a second that Sony won't go a similar route re DRM; whether by choice or otherwise.
MS will somewhat redeem themselves at E3, but the may 21st conference will still leave that bad taste in people's mouths.

Pitchforks aren't out too soon- they're just too focused at the one company.
Let's just hope both change their mind re DRM.

coming gen of consoles...not a particular demographic. And making the tv experience more interactive is appealing to more than just gamers. We're used to so much interactivity with out smartphones and tablets but the tv seems stuck in decades old tech. If some of these casuals buy the XB1 then it could pay off for MS. Many analysts continue to expect apple to take over in this realm with new product announcements.
