Is it wrong of me to hope that Final Fantasy goes back to being primarily Playstation exclusive, at least like 7-12? I'm probably wrong but to me it feels like FF13 was gimped because they decided to put it on 360 as well. I think the game would have still had awful writing and the annoying characters, but maybe it would have just been a better game without the linearity problems and such.

Pure conjecture though on my part. I have no idea what went down. Then again, these are new and different consoles that both use Blu-ray format for games so maybe it wouldn't be an FF13 repeat. Really I'm just ready for the series to go somewhere else without Lightning and I don't even hate Lightning. In fact I'm kinda excited for Lightning Returns because I'm a giant whore.

I think the problem solely lies on Square Enix themselves. They probably put in too much for Crystal Tools and thus sacrificed a lot of stuff in FFXIII so they can put it out faster.

Man, I really want to see Jak & Daxter 4 already. We did get Sly Cooper 4 eventually, so here's hoping.

And a mainline Ratchet & Clank on the PS4 as well. That goes without saying.

Yeah probably. I dunno. I just miss it when FF was mostly excellent when it was just coming out primarily for one console. The SNES games were great, the PS1/PS2 games were great and then the PS3/360 games were like whoa nelly

I liked FF13 for the most part and actually thought that 13-2 was a really good game, but I still felt a tremendous drop in quality. If it remains multiplatform, hopefully it isn't a repeat of this gen.

I really should get the Jak Collection. My PS2 days were spent mostly on Ratchet and Sly. Completely missed NDs contributions.

I think what happened with XIII was partly a deliberate move by Square Enix to appeal to a different demographic - the linear event after event style narrative and lack of down-time or backtracking was probably a misguided attempt to make the game seem more attractive to the ADHD riddled mass market. I hate to say it, but chasing that Call of Duty money, basically.
As an aside, I'd imagine development of the White Engine/Crystal Tools is what a lot of that time was spent waiting for any game to actually materialize on our end, the game itself probably didn't go into full development until sort of 18 months - 2 years before it finally released - hence the length of time since it's reveal isn't necessarily proportionate to the amount of 'game' we got in the end.
I'm not especially mad at Square Enix for everything surrounding FFXIII, it's a pretty misfortunate affair but they've experimented with different elements and play styles through all of the mainline FF's, XIII came along during the big shift into HD and that is really what damaged the brand.
I'm very optimistic about the future though, to me, XIII-2 showed that Square Enix aren't afraid to listen and react to fan feedback (even if some dismissed it outright for being a sequel) and Lightning Returns shows they can still inject some creativity and play around with new ideas even if a majority aren't particularly excited about the title itself. If they can bring all of those elements together (and stay away from delivering ultra-linear content) then they're doing something very right for future titles. Hopefully Versus, whatever it has become, keeps some of those features we were teased about (world map, air ships, summons etc) because it sounded the antithesis to the experiment that FFXIII was.

You and me both.

I just want Final Fantasy back. Ever since X, their mainline FF games have been taking too long to develop since 2000. I mean no more trilogy-ed stuff and like that (though one sequel is fine for fillers or something). And I hope they start reconsidering making a mainline FF game online after the FFXIV fiasco (and future fiasco).

I really can't wait for E3.

Would it be worth me taking off work on that Monday June 10th? I am Central time - U.S. and wouldn't be home from work till 6pm cst.

I want to watch as many of the conferences as I can since I plan to get a 3DS, Vita, Wii U, XB1 and PS4 this year.

Also, why do we not have a general E3 thread by now?

Nah it was because they had no idea how to make the game for several years until they made that demo=, which was just a linear corridor with fights in it, and after people gushed about how much they loved it they made the whole game like that.

Seriously I remember reading something like that, the game's development was a mess, it had no direction.

It's essentially taking off work to watch commercials. If it's worth it to you in order to see it all live, go ahead.

The problem with the development was that they were creating the engine alongside making the actual game. They released the initial trailers of both XIII and Versus, the former which had 'gameplay' before they had anything tangible to work with (around 2006, right?) they were still making the engine at least a year after that point. So gamers were delighted at the visuals and potential of the concept trailer and assumed Square Enix were hard at work making that world a reality, but that wasn't the case. It didn't go into full production until much later, by which time everybody was very tired of waiting and had very high expectations. If they'd not released those original trailers way back in the day I think the opinion of XIII would be significantly less harsh - yes it was linear and had bad writing, but I think it was the prolonged development that people are more frustrated about. Look at Versus, it was first revealed 7 years ago this month, and we know practically nothing about it - and you can bet of that time waiting, it'd only be in full production for 2 years or so. This is what Square Enix talk about when shortening development cycles.

Not sure what you mean by commercials. I mean, a surprise game reveal, etc. is hardly a commercial in my opinion. I guess if you mean that it is them touting their new systems then sure but that would make following any game media prior to its release basically a "commercial".

pretty sure it airs 8pm Central.

OH. why did i keep thinking June 10th was a tuesday. LOL

Yep, they tried to expand the audience which is why they were happy to side with MS at the time.

90 minutes of marketing spin, trailers and hyperbole. It's not much different from an informercial, the subject just happens to be more interesting than a Hoveround.

Yeah, it makes sense that they were expanding their market and thus approached Microsoft because they have a strong presence in the US. It didn't work out for them on either a financial or critical level though, so I hope they've learnt a lesson - not about expanding onto other hardware but about trying to appeal to other markets - Final Fantasy was just fine as it was.

Yeah I agree. I hope Japan's identity crisis that choked them this generation is over.

We need gameplay demos from as many games as possible. Who said their conference cannot be longer than 2 hours?

I want to see this in action.

I'm actually really excited for this for my daughter. She's recently taken to games like Skylanders, Minecraft, and sits with me when I play certain games like Ni No Kuni. This looks like something should we enjoy so far. Want to know more.

I think it was a mix of Microsoft moneyhatting SE (like what they probably did with Star Ocean 4 I think) and SE wanting to appease CoD crowds.

I wonder if they regret that decision now after all those years.

also Kagari .will you be at E3 ?

If yes .will you be conducting some of the intervieuws?

That's what happened with FFXIII. Toriyama came out many times and explained how much of a mess the whole process was.He said the the developers were in a state of disconnect and had no real communication. The linear hallways show it, it was the easiest way you could make a long game to meet a deadline.I predict that XIII took 1~1.5 years to actually make.It was a rushed game actually.

He even commented that XIII-2's development could have been better and more efficient.

Guys don't worry, they learned a lot from the past several years and are working on improving all aspects of development. You guys might hate XIII series but it taught them the hard way how to develop HD games.

Yes I will be at E3 and yes I will be doing interviews with several key people in the industry.

Nice, I can't wait for your coverage of XV.Btw, I love the hype you are generating for versus on Nova Crystallis but Ehren comes and ruins everything :P. I know he/she is passionate and loves FF but he/she is too short tempered :P(No offense meant at all)

I dont knowif its acceptable, but can you post where we can expect to find those interviews?Im not familiar with what site you work for if any.

I would be very interested in the Japanese publisher opinions on the DRM issues, as there seems to be a belife that it could have a real potential to do damage to the Japanese gaming market especially for PS4.

i'm sure microsoft wont let up any time soon.

i still say that MS wont bother with trying to apease the Japanese again .

even with tales and rpgs moneyhatted while sony was at their worst performance and getting their aroggant asses kicked still it basically amounted to nothing .

if i remembered Duckrolls words right i think MS has closed all their dev studios since 2011 and also no longer have a pressence at TGS.

I thought i heard they recently opened a new studio there altough i am not expecting any world shattering developments there.

please correct me if i am wrong .

thank you .

can you say who your main "targets" are ? or any specific developer?

I'm interested in Knack but find it to have some terribly ugly character decisions. Ogres and ogre looking lead character. The game style reminds me of Kameo which had some beautiful environments and then lots of ugly generic ogre enemies.

Yeah, me too. My daughter also loves NNK, although I'm interested in Knack for myself anyway.

I expect to see Drive Club and inFamous demoed on-stage, Knack is possible as its undemoed and new IP (and would get Cerny on stage again). KZ might be better off with a trailer, but they may want to demo it to demonstrate the improvements made since February.

I don't expect much for PS3 - they have three big IPs due this year which they've already revealed. They can just say that, say how great they are, that they're all playable on the showfloor then say today its all about the PS4. They may do the same for Vita, maybe with a sizzle reel/trailer of new stuff, but I don't expect much more on-stage except supportive statements for the platform.

Beyond that I'm not sure I want to speculate, although the thoughts here are interesting. I'd love to see Versus and TLG though, and expect that we will.

I was just thinking, if Sony Santa Monica show up it won't be God of War. They just released one this year.

I hope Santa Monica won't come back to GOW series. It's time for them to move on and let other studio to introduce something new in GOW. I think that both, Santa Monica and GOW, need a rest.

It would be fantastic to see something new from SSM

Well, IGN already said that a new GoW might be coming to the Vita. If that's the case, it should be developed by Ready at Dawn, but I'm not sure. As for the series itself, I'll take any game they throw at me, but I would also like to see someone bring something fresh to it. Hope that's the case if this Vita title is confirmed in a few days.

Ancient Egypt Universe/Gods. Female main character. New main weapon and combat system. Basically its a totally different game but same core themes.
