Sony CEO Kaz Hirai: PS4 is first and foremost a game console

Both consoles will play games; one is downplaying the other aspects because the other got mauled for playing up theirs.

MS reveal - all about entertainment, etc
PS4 reveal - all about the games

E3 MS - about the games, some entertainment talk
E3 Sony - about the entertainment, some games talk

You've already watched their e3 conferences? what are the megatons?

Great news for me and all (most?) Gaffers who're buying one.

But, and I hate to say this, I wonder how long into owning it will people miss other features? And can Sony deliver them in a timely fashion? And what about the unwashed masses? The mass market? How I hope they can see the appeal of a machine that's strictly about gaming at the outset.

I guess Sony want to gather momentum with the hardcore. Seems a sound strategy. But, then again, so does MS' seemingly "all in one approach".

So much unknown!!

I believe it does.

The PS4 Eye's incorporates four microphones that are capable of accurate sound detection and source origination. In addition, users will be able to login to their PS4 with face recognition and are capable of using their own body movements or voices to enjoy games more intuitively. Furthermore, PlayStation 4 Eye senses the color of DualShock 4's light bar to judge the positions of multiple players, and set characters in the same positions or let a character talk to a particular player, enabling players to enjoy games in new way.

well the only reason I buy videogame consoles is for the games. Without that there isn't a point imo.

Every other feature they could possibly include I already have a device that does it (probably better in most cases too)

Good for Sony focusing on games.

I don't want them after the games. I want them at the same time (launch) for the usual suspects (Netflix, Hulu, iplayer etc)

I'm sure they will, but I think he's talking about from a promotional point of view.

Like, see the Vita example. They scarcely talked about any other functionality until very close to launch, didn't show it off even until launch was pretty much upon us. I expect other software will be there on PS4 from day one but they may not spend a whole lot of time on it until a bit later in the year.

You know imo this is probably the biggest slap in the face of gamers that Microsoft has given. Even bigger then always online and the DRM shenenigans. They sacrificed performance for "other" features! I am kinda surprised that there isn't a bigger fuss about this here on Neogaf and the various podcasts! The awesome Ingame Chat podcast (go listen!!) touched this subject and as a gamer you should be mad about this. It's gonna bite them in the ass in a few years.

not when the cloud will give them a 3 times power boost...

Horsemen mount up and ride 4 gaming

Sony's camera can automate split screens to be in the correct order based on player positions. That's not even close to justification for putting it in the box.

There is absolutely no reason whatsoever that a console can't be a good media player and a good video game experience.

But what I expect is that the PS4 will be a fairly shitty media player, at least if you have your own media that you wish to play. The PS3 used to be a pretty good player but then it halted dead in its tracks and did an about face, implementing Cinavia for starters and seemingly putting all other improvements on the long finger. So no MKV for example or > 4GB movies.

That said I expect the XBox One won't be far behind in that regard. If it plays blu ray discs out of the box (and that's not a given), then it will probably enforce Cinavia too. And they might well charge $$$ to enable blu ray playback or not support it at all.

still needs HBO GO...

I'm serious. That stuff does matter to me as much as the games. Right now, the biggest advantage Sony has for me are the specs and what that means for console multi platform titles. If I don't stick with pc, I would probably want my 3rd party games to be their best versions.

I'm sure too, I was just being picky :)

yep. consider the difference between an iPhone that can play games as well as all that other stuff, and a 3DS or Vita which can do a lot of the things the iPhone can, but clearly puts games as the focus.

it's not difficult to see two companies laid out two very different visions for their systems.

Yep pretty much. And honestly I think that Sony has the correct idea too. Time will tell if the markets replicate my sentiment. But we live in a day and age where many households have various devices that can do cool things with tv in the living room. I don't think it's a big draw anymore. This is why I see Nintendo going wrong with their tablet centric approach.

I agree with the last part but not the first. MS said they wanted to get the boring stuff out of the way first so that they can focus on games at E3. A billion dollars invested on games but everyone's focus is on the features that MS didn't really want to showcase at a video games convention.

See, just think about it for a second. Who the heck reveals the Next generation of your console line up (your only console line up) with the mind set of 'getting the boring things out of the way'? It makes no sense to me, sorry. I think a reveal of a hardware is an indication of a company's overall goal/aim that underlines the product.

As I see it, come E3, nothing will change. From the naming of the console, unveiling and to the PR that followed they have made clear they are going for a all in one box with a very heavy emphasis on applications and media. At E3 they will most likely spend a good chunk of time on those as well. They will however have few megaton announcements which they believe will be enough to bring the x360 crowd on board with the system no matter what. Is this the wrong way to go? I'm not sure to be honest.

On an added note, I fully expect Sony to mess up something or the other by the time E3 ends. Would be pleasantly surprised if they didn't.

The ps4 will have access to all the same services as X1 ( netflix .hulu etc..) so sony has that covered

durring the ps meeting they bassiccaly said it will have all these services while showing it on the board but unlike MS they did'nt dwell on it and went straight to the matter at hand GAMES.

And yet it will still have almost all the media capabilities of the Xbox One. It really makes me laugh when people moan about the Xbone having too much non gaming stuff when clearly PS4 is going to do most of those things as well. As far as games go? Xbone will be getting all the third party games PS4 is getting and their first party studios aren't exactly going to stop making games for Xbone just because of the way MS are positioning the system as an entertainment device. Both systems are going to have plenty of games. Both systems are going to have plenty of non gaming stuff.

I'm getting a PS4 instead of an Xbone by the way. I'm just calling it the way I see it. Some of the Sony ball washing here because they're supposedly all about the games is laughable.

I don't think people complain about the XBO because of all the things it does. There is a difference between a game console being able to do a lot of things and a company positioning a device as being able to do a lot of things including gaming. It's the philosophy and position of the device that has people worried. If you are selling me this device as an all-in-one system with the focus clearly on TV then I'm going to get concerned when you try to tell me that games is your main focus when you are doing something totally different.

Consider this, we've already seen live TV and Skype* footage on the XBO but no live game footage. For me, that says a lot about where the core focus is.

* skype footage might have been pre-recorded

i'm pretty sure Cerny said it used the lightbar to detect depth.

The camera isn't required.

Does the light bar on the DualShock 4 encroach on Move’s featureset?

The light-bar doesn’t require the camera to function. It’s just a different way of identifying the player. In terms of using the LED [as in the Dualshock 3, with] numbers like 1, 2, 3 and 4, it looked a bit odd.

Sony are doing a good job of saying all the right things. Their timing has been great in regards to announcements and details regarding the PS4...E3 should be a blast!

MS reveal - all about entertainment, etc
PS4 reveal - all about the games

E3 MS - about the games, some entertainment talk
E3 Sony - about the entertainment, some games talk

That's an interesting perspective, considering Sony pulled back the curtain months before MS, and their entire message was gamer-first.

yea, and we all know windows 8 is a bloated pile of shit.
i hope SNE keeps the PS4 OS as barebones as possible.

Yet Windows Phone runs on 512mb of RAM quite easily. The same core is powering both. Don't confuse all of windows 8 with the kernel and the bits that Xbox is using. The Core bits of windows they are taking is very small and not very resource intensive.

I found the PS3 to be a better streaming/entertainment device than the 360. I'm sure they won't slouch on that part of the console in the upcoming generation. This kind of message is good PR, though.

Gonna have to say, I'm super impressed with how Sony is handling the PS4. I'm usually all about Nintendo, but after the disaster that they call a launch for the Wii U, I really think it's time to pick a second console to go for. Still love me some Nintendo though.

Now we just wait to see Microsoft's response...

As someone who doesn't really plan on buying either one, I find the whole thing really entertaining, watching each of them twist so violently to meet perceived demand. If I was diehard one way or another, I think I'd be pretty pissed these days.

We already know what they think 'gamers are crack addicts and consumers are idiots, they'll buy anything' (referencing to their e3 you'll still buy it quote)

It depends how much they intend to use the Move functionalities in the DS4.

There is no such thing as Move functionalities in the DS4. There is a light bar, which may or may not be facing the camera. There is no sphere, therefor no accurate way to judge depth. The Move itself is also a PS4 peripheral.

You guys buy into the PR that you want to believe.

Yup you are right! It's PR, kaz is as trustworthy as a carsalesman here. He wants to sell his product to you. But at the very least his vision and priorities for the console seem at the right place. You see the gamerfirst mentality in alot of things when it comes to PS4.

Sony has being talking up gaming for ps4 way before the xbone was revealed.

Is this supposed to be a negative comparison? I've owned four iPhones and neither the Vita nor 3DS.

it really is and I can't believe people don't see it.

Makes me wonder what % of GPU processing power is locked away for non-gaming functions. How did that work in the days PS360?
