Sony CEO Kaz Hirai: PS4 is first and foremost a game console

Sony is on fire. If they nail the DRM it's going to be a damn blowout. Ok, maybe not but they'll be the darling of the hardcore for sure.

Well, we'll see what that billion dollar investments turned into come E3. Also, PS Eye will come bundled in every box too and I honestly don't see it as a downside either.

1. we don't know if it'll be bundled, but I don't see it as a major downside just a feature I don't want and would prefer to not pay for. The PS Eye however doesn't look to be gobbling up nearly as much of the PS4's resources however.

2. We'll see further proof of it's effects to be sure, but we've already seen the initial reverberations of the difference in philosophy with the hardware alone.

And yet it will still have almost all the media capabilities of the Xbox One. It really makes me laugh when people moan about the Xbone having too much non gaming stuff when clearly PS4 is going to do most of those things as well. As far as games go? Xbone will be getting all the third party games PS4 is getting and their first party studios aren't exactly going to stop making games for Xbone just because of the way MS are positioning the system as an entertainment device. Both systems are going to have plenty of games. Both systems are going to have plenty of non gaming stuff.

I'm getting a PS4 instead of an Xbone by the way. I'm just calling it the way I see it. Some of the Sony ball washing here because they're supposedly all about the games is laughable.

us gamers, us gamers!

This is not rocket science, first make your core audience happy (us gamers) then go for everybody else.

Problem with MS they are allocating excessive system resources to THREE fucking operating systems.

3 gigs of Ram
2 CPU cores
10% of the GPU

all on useless non gaming shit. Both these systems are weak already and allocating that many resources to non gaming stuff is insane.

You know imo this is probably the biggest slap in the face of gamers that Microsoft has given. Even bigger then always online and the DRM shenenigans. They sacrificed performance for "other" features! I am kinda surprised that there isn't a bigger fuss about this here on Neogaf and the various podcasts! The awesome Ingame Chat podcast (go listen!!) touched this subject and as a gamer you should be mad about this. It's gonna bite them in the ass in a few years.

He definitely said all the right things. Having all these additional features is fine but it's better when they compliment the games part rather than be the focus of the system itself.

Not sure if he should be downplaying media features-- I'd brag about being the #1 Netflix video source, and I hope Sony works on continuing to push Netflix superiority.

What happens if MS nabs third party exclusives to games like Fallout? If just half of MS's 15 exclusives live up to the hype they are setting, will Sony be screwed?

Yeah that's good to hear, but MSFT is investing 1 billion dollars in games, so they can't be that bad either.

We'll see at E3 how things go.

A product's success is determined by its perceived value proposition. This differs from its actual value proposition, as marketing can distort it.

The value proposition of the console which is most appealing to the most profitable and largest number of consumers wins. Sony's narrower focus is great and should be its primary focus, but I do hope that they have strong offerings outside of the pure 'play games' space, as the market demands it. Have it enable all major media streaming services, be able to buy and rent movies and music and access all common internet sites like youtube, etc. Expand the trophy system too. Improve the digital store extensively. Make it a convenient way for you to watch content over a network, and easy to set up and use (ie non tech folks can handle it). Allow it to stream content online to you over the net or over wifi.

Do that AND be the better games machine AND market better than you have in the past (crying baby?) and you'll do just fine.

What makes you think it will only play games? The ps3 already does all this stuff you listed. Of course the ps4 will. Sony is simply pointing out, rightly, that you can't sell a games console on things like netflix, youtube, skype, etc. since there are plenty of much cheaper and more mobile devices that can do all of that.

A console's only reason to exist is to play games. If you don't get that part right, it won't sell.

H_Prestige! That is the correct answer!

Well, games are why I have always bought consoles (no shit, lol). Additional features are great, just as long as the gaming side of things is the primary focus from both a hardware and content perspective. Making gaming just another feature and cutting back on the hardware in order to focus on all of these other things is simply not what I am looking for. Can't wait to buy a PS4.

I actually want to see more of the UI!

At the reveal event for a next gen 'gaming' console

Sony = Games, games, games, features related to games and more games + a very good breakdown of the hardware

MS = Tv tv tv tv tv Game game tv tv dealership tv tv and some more tv, game

See the difference? This is no conspiracy. When MS show games at E3 people will praise that too. If Sony messes up at E3 people will go after them too.

However right now we have a clear difference in the message Sony and MS sending out. MS = all in one box
Sony = Video game system first and foremost

yep. consider the difference between an iPhone that can play games as well as all that other stuff, and a 3DS or Vita which can do a lot of the things the iPhone can, but clearly puts games as the focus.

it's not difficult to see two companies laid out two very different visions for their systems.

so it will work offline like these game consoles : ??

snes , nes , md , Saturn , dreamcast , gc , ms , pc engine , pcfx , fm towns marty , n64 , ps1 ,ps2 , ps3 , xbox , xbox 360

because if so then yes its is foremost a game console

“I fundamentally believe that the initial market that we need to make sure we appeal to with any new platform … is really the gaming audience,”

They're still going after the entertainment pie i.e all the same audience MS is going after.

Just another PR piece. Kinda like MS saying how they have the gamer at heart with 15 unique titles...yet surprisingly the reception of that news was different from this one

Just make that $350 rumor true and it is all good

I can't turn on my tv with my voice and skype with my mailman while watching Oprah.

Sony = failing the ADHD crowd that refuses to just play a game without doing anything else at the same time.

The message was clear in the PS4 reveal show, but it's good to have it reiterated. Microsoft should have never revealed the Xbox One without showing off games first and foremost. People buy consoles for games, everything else is just gravy.

I agree with the last part but not the first. MS said they wanted to get the boring stuff out of the way first so that they can focus on games at E3. A billion dollars invested on games but everyone's focus is on the features that MS didn't really want to showcase at a video games convention.

This is my #1 issue with X1. The DRM sucks but it wouldn't be a problem for me. I was gung-ho about the 720, was gonna get both of them at launch, and then they daggered us with this bloated OS taking almost half the ram, a quarter of the cores, and 10% of the gpu power of the console. Just unreal. The ram is already slow enough and they're allocating 3 gigs of it for TV and Kinect functionality and "snapping".

RELEASE THE KAZ GIFS!!!

First time seeing this one. Amazing. LOL

Don't forget the power OF THE CLOUD!

And that's not the only thing, the difference in GPU processing power (+55% and more for PS4) is also a direct result of Microsoft's media center focus, they wanted 3GB for those features, that's why they went with DDR3 and eSRAM, and that's why they couldn't include more Compute Units for the GPU.

I don't want them after the games. I want them at the same time (launch) for the usual suspects (Netflix, Hulu, iplayer etc)

Yeah and what's your point? PS Eye won't reduce system performance.

It was pointed out on the list for the XOne but he didn't throw it in on the PS4's list. That was all.

Eh - Sony and Nintendo make the same. Not the same amount, but they also "sacrifice" so we sould also be mad at them by what you say ...

This echoes what we heard at the reveal. Everyone in the company is on the same page and it's damn good to see.

Complete 180 from what they were like in '06.

Good to hear the continued message that games matter on a gaming console. A focus on games is what will get a console into homes during the first half of its life cycle, not TV integration, television shows, or non-gaming applications.

If you want to add them, ok. But the people who want to game are the people you need to buy it. Those interested in the extra features not related to games aren't going to buy your system until there's a decent price drop and 3rd parties aren't making games for your last-gen system.
