Sony CEO Kaz Hirai: PS4 is first and foremost a game console

Is it not funny how someone has to state the obvious in this day and age about a game console?

Like saying that it is for games and gamers?

HAVE WE REALLY COME TO THIS

I blame microsoft and the Wii (paritally)

This is why they'll lose next generation. Watching live TV is all the rage with the kids these days.

I'm getting the PS4 first.. However I know my daughter would kill to say "My Little Pony!" and the channel switches..

I need to keep her away from MS's E3 conference!

I like how many times he rammed that point in. Seems like he took queues from MS' misstep. "It's for gamers guys! 100% gamers! Gamers. Gamers!"

:P
That has been their line since the PS4's unveil. One of the first words were something like "This is a huge risk, but we're putting the focus of our console on the core gamer". Microsoft came out with the general entertainment box approach. Sony is just sticking to its original line, while Microsoft is doing its best to remind people that their system will still play games as they rage over the word "entertainment".

Problem with MS they are allocating excessive system resources to THREE fucking operating systems.

3 gigs of Ram
2 CPU cores
10% of the GPU

all on useless non gaming shit. Both these systems are weak already and allocating that many resources to non gaming stuff is insane.

This could mean -I reaaaaally hope this be true- that Sony's E3 conference will be all about games, just like the Microsoft one.

Perfect for me. All others apps can wait or can be presented on the blog, I don't care at all.

Don't forget experiences!

A product's success is determined by its perceived value proposition. This differs from its actual value proposition, as marketing can distort it.

The value proposition of the console which is most appealing to the most profitable and largest number of consumers wins. Sony's narrower focus is great and should be its primary focus, but I do hope that they have strong offerings outside of the pure 'play games' space, as the market demands it. Have it enable all major media streaming services, be able to buy and rent movies and music and access all common internet sites like youtube, etc. Expand the trophy system too. Improve the digital store extensively. Make it a convenient way for you to watch content over a network, and easy to set up and use (ie non tech folks can handle it). Allow it to stream content online to you over the net or over wifi.

Do that AND be the better games machine AND market better than you have in the past (crying baby?) and you'll do just fine.

"It is exactly the same as the One in regards to what it can do, we're just pandering to you as if that makes it any different"

Certain members on here that are trusted to know 'insider' info have basically said Sony's e3 will be focusing on games, just like Microsoft's.

Microsoft = Reveal additional features then games

Bad.

Sony = Reveal games then additional features

Good.

Both = Games + Additional Features

Its all about where you set your priorities, that trickles down throughout the design and functionality of the product.

MS = Features then Games:
8 GB of DDR3, 3 GB of that dedicated to the OS.
1.2TFLOP GPU to make room for the EDRAM needed since they chose DDR3 for aforementioned OS reasons.
Kinect as part of the BoM in every box.

Sony = Games then features:
8 GB of GDDR5, 512MB-1GB reserved for the OS.
1.8TFLOP GPU
Almost all the BoM focused on games related hardware

See the difference? Focusing on non-gaming features has resulted in inferior hardware already for Microsoft. That focus the entire back half of last generation is why MS disbanded many first party studios and now has to start up a bunch of unknowns to make new first party software. Meanwhile Sony's first parties established themselves last generation and we have high quality content to look forward to early in the PS4's life.

General design and marketing philosophy invades all aspects of a product.

RELEASE THE KAZ GIFS!!!

I wouldnt go blaming the Wii, all they did was make gaming more accessible so everyone could play games. First and foremost, the Wii was still a gaming machine. Microsoft misses the point completely by presenting it as a multimedia device...in a sea of multimedia devices that are cheaper.

Well, we'll see what that billion dollar investments turned into come E3. Also, PS Eye will come bundled in every box too and I honestly don't see it as a downside either.

He's right. Platforms are built upon the shoulders of the hardcore gamer and then you can branch out from there. Hardcore gamers are loyal and buy a lot of games too.

Did I missed the memo?

Since when a "gaming console" is not a "gaming console" so now him saying is a "gaming console" is a great thing?

He only said an obvious thing no?

Compare the Microsoft reveal to the Sony reveal and it becomes apparent why it's now a good thing to say something like this, which should be obvious.

Sony is targeting to become a home entertainment hub as much as MS but they're projecting that fact as a gaming console that can also do other entertainment related tasks.

Kaz is really putting the most beloved message out to the public.

What makes you think it will only play games? The ps3 already does all this stuff you listed. Of course the ps4 will. Sony is simply pointing out, rightly, that you can't sell a games console on things like netflix, youtube, skype, etc. since there are plenty of much cheaper and more mobile devices that can do all of that.

A console's only reason to exist is to play games. If you don't get that part right, it won't sell.

Hopefully this means they'll just show games at E3

I actually want to see more of the UI!

Bad.

Both = Games + Additional Features

At the reveal event for a next gen 'gaming' console

Sony = Games, games, games, features related to games and more games + a very good breakdown of the hardware

MS = Tv tv tv tv tv Game game tv tv dealership tv tv and some more tv, game

See the difference? This is no conspiracy. When MS show games at E3 people will praise that too. If Sony messes up at E3 people will go after them too.

However right now we have a clear difference in the message Sony and MS sending out. MS = all in one box
Sony = Video game system first and foremost
