Mark Cerny: "PlayStation 4 won't require to be always connected"

One week ago elmundo.es (the website of the spanish newspaper El Mundo) published an interview with Mark Cerny.

In one moment of the interview the asked him:

Is the PS4 console is designed to be connected in a 'permanent' way? What I'm asking is it will need to be connected all the time? And if so, how will this affect plans for PSN?

Cerny: PlayStation 4 is not a permanent connection system in that sense, but the experience is much richer if you are connected. You will have access to digital content and the updates for your games, along with a wide range of social functions: upload videos and screenshots, see your friends play and interact with them in various ways within the games.

The interview is very interesting, I will translate other parts if you are interested.

Sony's been pretty clear that the internet won't be required. Shuhei Yoshida said in this month's Game Informer that the PS4 won't require an internet connect and that they never considered making the internet mandatory since many areas of their business do not have available internet.

We already knew that you don't need an internet connection to use the PS4.
Edit: Oh nice, people are trying to spin it that you need a connection every 24h. That's good /s

Any word if it has a "connect every so often" requirement?

You don't need a connection at all

OPM You talked a lot about service, tech and ideas; how are you going to present PS4 to a more casual market?

Michael Denny So I think two of the other pillars we talked about in-terms of design were simplicity and immediacy. Even taking back a step from here, PlayStation 4 can still be enjoyed old school without an Internet connection at all. So it depends what level you want to use these feature sets at. So with ’simple’ and ’immediacy’ we want it so that everything is one button click away, for example. And ’immediacy’ takes down these barriers that can be frustrating to gamers between the player getting access to the content.

this doesn't mean anything at all.
Xbox One isn't "always connected" in that sense neither.

Come on Sony. Spill all out.

ms invented that parole officer 24 check-in bs, i doubt sony would steal such a horrible idea, wont rule it out, but seems like a stretch

I'll take a 'install the game but leave the disc in as a key, if you want to play without a disc in the drive you have to register the game online and then cannot resell'

Yep, it was said that the console will work without an internet connection at all.

If this is still the case then that pretty much confirms that used games will play just fine. If a game doesn't require internet at first use how is it going to check whether it's been used or not.

Sounds a lot like what we heard from MS before they announced their 24h DRM.

It isn't though. They've been pretty clear to start. If you want to be offline with PS4 than fine. What they're saying is you really won't be getting all you could put of the consoles capabilities.

XBONE doesnt either just every 24 hrs, stop being secretive and just spill it Sony

But it doesn't confirm that you won't have to call 'home' every 24 hour period though.

I don't know how you figure it, but having to make sure you're connected every 24 hours counts as it needing to be connected to the internet at all times.

We already knew this. This however does not deconfirm DRM. I heard rumours of RFID chips on the discs. Hopefully that doesn't come to fruition.
