In terms of gaming, yes. But it terms of the console as a whole? It doesn't depending on what you care about. That's the "twist".
Not just 'in terms of gaming'; "Q: Does Xbox One require an “always on” Internet connection?
A: No, it does not have to be always connected, but Xbox One does require a connection to the Internet.". They clearly state 'Xbox One', and not 'the gaming functions of Xbox One'. You cannot access anything if you don't connect every 24 hours.
As I've said before a person CAN enjoy the Xbox One without being connected to the internet at all but it's within precise examples/situations (outside of gaming).
Please show me where they said connecting to the internet is only required for gaming, because I haven't seen any such quote from Microsoft.
This is how many companies make public statements -- Many tell the truth but it isn't the full truth. This in itself is why I choose to wait for more details. If you are different then that's fine but I don't get why I was criticized so heavily (haha). I don't see any of the big major gaming sites using this news as an "100% confirmation".
Nobody claims these statements give a 100% confirmation on no DRM. However, the statements do seem to give a clear indication on where PS4 is likely headed concerning DRM, which is something you seem happy to just entirely dismiss.
One wouldn't need a robust/fast internet connection for a simple "Is this person connected to the internet?" check up.
"More relief... At a roundtable this morning,
Sony's game studios chief, Shuhei Yoshida, told reporters that any requirement for users to register a game online in order to play it would be left to game publishers. Sony won't require that."
Sony won't require users to register games online at a hardware level. As such, I don't see them forcing internet checks on a hardware level, since that would essentially go directly against this statement.
"Social is big for us, but we understand there are some people who are anti-social! So if you don't want to connect to anyone else, you can do that.""
He mentioned anti-social gamers in terms of not connecting to anyone else. You can still use online features while being anti-social at the same time.
That quote started with "Oh yes, yes,
you can go offline totally.". Don't pull it out of context.
The statement said "enjoyed old school" not "played old school". One could make the assumption that he's taking about playing games and that would be perfectly understandable but that's not what he directly said which is why I'm personally not going to use it as a "100% confirmation".
"PlayStation 4 can still be enjoyed old school without an Internet connection at all.". The emphasis is on 'Playstation 4' and 'without an internet connection at all'. As in; the entirety of the PS4 experience can be enjoyed without an internet connection at all.
