Vita PSN Game & Service Thread | May 2013 | Lovecraftian Wasteland

I'm playing Blazblue for the first time. I just got through some of the story mode. The calamity trigger and continuum shift parts. Just what the hell is going on? There are vampires and time shifts and nekos and weird robot girls and dark pasts. It's literally like they threw every anime trope in a blender and fed the contents to a machine that was forced to assemble some kind of cohesive plot centered around it. And it failed. Miserabley. The plot is worse than the plot from Street Fighter IV. At least that one was understandable.

Just give yourself over to the madness.

Listen to the music, enjoy the incredible visuals and just take the absurdity as it comes. I like to view the whole thing as an exercise in a narrative spiraling into new levels of nonsense. Don't dismay when confronted with inane, trope-filled scenarios, rather, get into a mindset where you just want it to become more and more ridiculous. Logic be damned!

Because yes, it will get weirder.

It's a fighting game. With a story. It's bound to be either ridiculous or dull, and I'll take ridiculous over dull any day.

I'm thinking of picking up a Vita tomorrow, I have a question about the web browser. What's it like to use for light browsing these days? Say a site like neogaf mobile or something? Is it quick and responsive or slow and clunky? How would it compare to an iPad in that regard?

It's worse than any good smartphone. It's somewhat serviceable to read a FAQ while you play.

It's okay. Not amazing, but certainly usable, especially for something like Neogaf.

Getting back into mobile gaming, thinking about pick up a vita. What's the chances of a price drop at e3?

Unrelated to Vita, but this is where I see Toto the most...

Just grabbed a copy of Persona 3 for PS2 from one of the local vidya game shops. If this isn't the best game of all time after your continuous hype, I'm putting you on ignore.

The game seems to be exactly what you would expect -- a dungeon crawler for people who like anime and its common supernatural and power of friendship tropes.

Playing it on the PS3, there seems to be no way to get back to the XMB. Have to power down the system to get out of the game?-(

Tried holding down the PS button? I think it should give you a prompt to shut down the game.

Doesn't do anything. You'd think this would be the least thing they would enable in the game!

(Else, I just made my monthly blog post on Giant Bomb summarizing last month's announcements and listing current and upcoming titles for the Vita. It's over here if anyone's interested.)

Doesn't look like it. End of the summer with a bigger release, like Killzone, makes more sense. The summer software lineup in terms of big titles is pretty anemic so a sales drop wouldn't do much after an initial bump.

Look at this again

and this
screen_00298-noscale.jpg

this is bad, jaggies-fest,bad shadows, low polygon count, very short draw distance they're trying to hide using fog (like something on N64), and just ugly looking.

Looks remarkably good to me, especially considering it's about twice the size on my screen and a still shot. Some people are never satisfied though.

Man teraway looks like shit to me to. Can't stand the artstyle.

it's weird that they are even failed on getting the "paper" look right and ended with ugly art style.

I tried to the screens on my Vita, they are still bad. suffer from many thing like ugly artstyle and bad bland lighting and jaggies.

Can we just have an optimistic title for the new thread? You know just to break the routine?

honestly I'd rather just have "Vita PSN Game & Service Thread | June 2013 " without any gimmicky subtitles.

Maybe add two or three of the month's noteworthy titles too.

Vita PSN Game & Service Thread | June 2013 | Muramasa Rebirth (NA), Toukiden (JP)

100% yeah that will be great and actually useful(to have people know the biggest releases games of the months)

Art style is subjective, I like Tearaway although I'm not crazy about it. I'm sure it will look incredible on that screen anyway and I'm really curious to see it firsthand.

The technical flaws you're talking about come from expectation out of this world, it's like you're expecting a machine capable of rendering stuff that struggles even on PS3.
Of course there are jaggies, you see that even on PS3, how are you expecting not to see them on a handheld? Jesus. AA is the first thing to go when you have to manage raw power to render a big world.
The fogging is totally normal, do you expect to render an entire world with infinite depth of field like Skyrim (on PC that is, just have a look at the terrible looking console versions) on a fucking handheld? That's crazy talk.

Also, as usual the compression kills those vita screenshots, I hope Sony will do something to fix that via a firmware update.

I have to agree with him. It seems like a modern day tribute to the N64, improving the graphics to modern standards (Vita's version of that), but then smearing a grey filter over the screens like most modern games seem to do on the consoles, for reasons I've never understood.

Look at those screens, you have a lavender sky, burnt orange, british racing green. Colorful, but subdued colors.

At least Uncharted was vibrant looking.

"Carving an Independent niche" and "Sacrifice your Independent Soul" are negative?

"Carving an Independent niche" sounded like we gave up on the thought that Vita can be more than just an indie machine.
Let's face it, Indie games are nice, but the vast majority of the people want AAA-titles and the reason for the Vita not selling well is the lack thereof.

So let's hope for some E3 announcements.

I like the game idea. It's useful info. The other titles fell flat for me on the cute scale. It just seemed like words added together even if it makes no sense. It's the bane of podcast titles as well.

Guys, I want to customize my second Vita (I keep confusing them, lol), I'd love to make it look like a little PSOne or something that could help me recognize her as a PSX emulator device.

Two issues though: I need a skin/sticker/decal/whatever that won't leave glue marks when removed, even in an year. That's because I'm sure I'll grow tired of it at some point and I'll want to get rid of it.
The second issue is that I don't have a clue where I could find something of decent quality but not too expensive, that ships internationally and has a nice selection.

Any suggestion?

use same skin as the one that was on my ex-Vita (I wont post a photo -it's in April thread iirc look for it there- because it make me sad remembering it)

Wait, I can't find the specific post but I seem to remember that, was it the one with the white blackground and red leaves? Where did you buy it?

I want to back up some games so I can try out some of the recent PS+ stuff.
Currently set up to do a system back up, but if I ever just wanted a particular game back, I don't think that's the correct solution.

Can you choose to do one game at a time, I have never really looked?

It's my favorite use of Gaf Mobile (VS Phones or tablet), because it stores info well (don't have to log in each time), handles windows OK, and clicking to youtube for watching vids is pretty fast, and looks great on the screen. Also great to be able to use it even while playing games now; in this past, it was a "big" app, like a game, and required you to close games while surfing.

The things I dislike about the Vita Browser:

  • It only stores 2 or 3 windows in Cache, before you'll have to reload the tab when you open it. Not a big deal, but something to notice.
  • It can stumble on loading a page, if page in question is full of heavy images. LOTS of Gifs and high-res screenshots will make it go nuts.

I prefer it to most console-born browsing experiences, and over phones. At times, it actually quicker to use for certain things than my computer, so I welcome it as a second screen for viewing trailers or checking post.

I never do full backups. From CMA

Vita ---------> PS3 or PC
Vita Applications
Pick which game or games you want to copy with check boxes
select copy
wait.

I do it like this so I have all my library on my PC and on PS3 at any given time. Now, I can play through a game, back only it up in a short amount of time, copy my backlog into rotation.

I enjoy your lists, keep 'em coming.

Suggestion: Maybe you should add upcoming PSP games too? The only one I know of right now is Sweet Fuse, but there may be others.

Gravity Rush is so much fun. I managed to gold medal the 1st area challenges before leaving to the 2nd area. Except the shooting one, that definitely requires some leveling. But all that xp is pretty great. =)

I used to think Festival of Blood had the best open world traversal but this game is it. If only they didn't map the gravity slide jump to shaking the vita. The slide challenges were harder because of input errors due to Kat jumping when I didn't want her.

I never bothered with the challenges in Gravity Rush, the awful loading times ruined them.

"Oh hey look a challenge, hmm do I stop playing for 30 seconds so it loads the fucking thing or do I ignore it and continue playing the game uninterrupted... yeah let's ignore it"

But yeah I did enjoy the navigation in the game, especially how once your power is high enough you can just fly directly from one borough of the city to another, feels like a boss.

Yeah best open world traversal is this game. Its so massive. Didn't expect it to be so big for a Vita game.

I had more fun in Infamous 2 though, because of the powers. The controls with gravity slide are annoying. Would have preferred it if it could have buttons and the joystiq rather than sixaxis.

Hello fellow gafers hope to join the vita crew but I'm waiting for e3 if there is going to be any price cuts in the memory cards or the handheld itself so that I could invest the extra money on my upcoming vita library... I already have some games due to crossbuy and PS plus but there are mutiple games that I wish to play when I buy my vita in the upcoming future

Anyone tried that Imaginstruments app they quietly added last week?

Messed a bit with it, I don't really understand it. It seems worse than that Beat Trellis on PS Mobile (which is sad, a PSM app being better than a native Vita app, sigh).
